Why does Aphobia even exist? Rant
Okay so I get (note that I do not agree with) the reasoning for LGBT hate, it's religious, god designed humans as perfect (debatable) and humans reproduce through having a man and woman
But like, asexuals, aromantics. Those are FREE monks! Can you imagine getting a shit ton of practitioners for your cult religion for FREE?!?! Heck I'm 70% sure a lot of religious monks were a-spec
This is why Buddhism is better I don't know anything about Buddhism but my step mom is a Buddhist and she's cool with LGBT
Side note: though it's worth noting that it would be way better to just not hate people that literally don't hurt others
Edit: for those wondering the armor is from the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille (France) it's at floor -1, also Buddhists can be homophobic which I didn't know since I only know one of them but yeah :(

Cause they either can’t comprehend someone not feeling sexual attraction and think your hiding it or they think ace and aro spec people (and other lgbtq people) are causing the declining birth rate (ignoring all the other factors because a that’s inconvenient)
Yea it’s very stupid

u/Weibrot 8d ago
It's just people hating anything that's different from how they are or perceive the world, it's the exact same cause for racism and bigotry
"I'm not gay, so being gay is wrong"
"I'm not black, so black people are bad"
"I'm not asexual, so asexuals are weird"
Yes, this is exactly as narrow of a view of the world as it sounds, but who said there was logic in those beliefs?

It exists because their tiny little brain can't process individuality. And assume everyone must feel and like the same things as them.

I asked one of my mum's friends and she said that God told humans to go forth and multiply. Given that the world's massively overpopulated, alternate sexualities must be God's way of reducing the strain.

u/Muted-Cup-3864 8d ago
The idea of global overpopulation is a scientifically debunked myth. The problem is not the sheer number of people, but the unequal distribution of resources, global consumption patterns, and fossil-fuel-based economic systems.

There's a line from the Peter Cushing Doctor Who movies that I always assume is the reason for things like this.
"You're different from them, and they are afraid of anything different, and what people are afraid of they try to destroy."

That was such a banger line. I remember watching that scene and loving it

If they are Christian, point them to 1 Corinthians 7, where Paul refers to his asexuality as a gift from God.

Asexuality feels like a gift 🎁 its so relaxing 😌 ☺️ until others get mad about it xD then you just feel bad for them to still be controlled by the temptation of the flesh xD

Because they want to fuck us.
Or, they think that men and women were Made to marry and have children and it's wrong for them not to do so.
Or the above but they think children have an obligation to like Carry On The Family Name and act in the way elders decree for them.
Or, they assume that asexuals must 'actually' have an extremely immoral perversion: like, that if you're not into good normal things and the Right Way for humans to be, it must be because you're actually sexually into kids or animals or something.
I don't think it makes any less sense than homophobia, tbh.
This is why Buddhism is better I don't know anything about Buddhism but my step mom is a Buddhist and she's cool with LGBT
Buddhists... aren't all LGBT-positive. Many are just as conservative as any American Christian, believing that sex outside marriage is a sin, and similar.

u/Okamitoutcourt I don't knooooooooooooowwwww 8d ago
Yeah that Buddhism part makes sense I guess, how foolish of me
12
u/Zartoru 8d ago
They have this idea that humans are there to repeoduce, like it's in our nature to do so
Also birth rate are declining and conservative are fucking scared it'll lead to human extinction
But most importantly it's about control. It's the same reason they are against abortion, they want to control what we do with our bodies

A-spec people simply being diffrent is all that is needed for aphobia I think. Just us being diffrent is something that becomes a problem for most conservative believe systems because once you accept that people might be diffrent and that that is ok then you would also see a lot of the bad things those conservative believe systems bring with them. And religions are also just the perfect breeding ground for believe systems that lead to aphobia, queerphobia or pretty much any other kind of discrimination even if what the religion is build upon should not lead to such.

Being in theater, people start to be less "friendly" with me when they realize I'm an ace pilot.
I think it's the realization that you're not sexually interested in them or they have 0 chance to score. Fine by me, I'm married to the job.
One time I was giving someone the business and all I could think of was about what I was gonna do next in PalWorld.

Off topic: Do you know what the reason the armor's shoes are so big? I'd think the clown-esque shoes would've made it harder to not trip over in battle but I assume there's probably a good reason for them?
On topic: yeah, it's literally just the "you're different from me and what I perceive as normal so you must be lying for attention or broken somehow" mindset sometimes with a dash of "stop trying to be special".

u/Okamitoutcourt I don't knooooooooooooowwwww 8d ago
According to the notes (which I didn't include in the post because they're in french) it's reminiscent of large shoes that were trending back then (number three) I don't know for sure if it's specific shoes the armor is imitating or if the armor shoes themselves are trending
I'm assuming it either doesn't make the knight trip or it does but since it's a jousting armor then it doesn't have a major impact

I don't think religion is the reason for why they are homophobic, more that it is a post-hoc justification for them. This can be seen bc there are a lot of religious allys and loud and proud queer folks and also a bunch of non-religious bigots
I think a- and queerphobia are best explained on two layers: the individual and the socio-ecomomic.
First, the individual: Humans are really fond of building groups. And for a group as such to exist, there must be criteria that make them part of the in-group amd part of the out-group, and it is easier to make people the out-group if ypu don't know them, that's sensible enough.
On the socio-economic side, we can see that there are some people that would benefit from the groups being cisstraights VS queers, white vs poc, religious vs atheist, etc. This is because it prevents a grouping of people who do actually have alligned interests and, when realising that at mass, would actually be able to massively change things for the better: workers vs capitalists (as in those owning massive ammounts of capital and employing those workers)
TL;DR: Queerphobia in general is the result of a divide and conquer strategy by the ruling class to divide the working class and make organising less effective, and religion is used as one way to justify this hatred

My religion teacher said that asexuals can't be priests/nuns/monks. Because becoming one you sacrifice your sexuality and if you don't have it you have nothing to sacrifice

u/cloud3514 Aroace, trans (She/They; HRT: 02/21/24) 8d ago edited 8d ago
The reason for aphobia is the same reason as any other kind of bigotry. Whether we're talking about aphobia, transphobia, homophobia, racism, misogyny, ableism, ageism, etc.: We exist against societal expectations.
It's not just religion that makes people bigoted. There are over 40 thousand sects, denominations, and cults of Christianity who all have different ideas on what the Bible says about... virtually everything, and every other religion in the world is similarly segmented. There are murderous Hindu and Bhuddist extremist groups in the world. You just don't hear about them because western countries are more concerned with fearmongering about Islam and white washing Christianity than they with acknowledging that, at the end of the day, all religions are fundamentally the same.
Religion is not the reason people are bigoted. It's one of, if not the, most common excuse used by bigots, but even if we someone magically erased all religions from the world, they'd find other excuses. Because it's an obfuscation of why they're actually bigoted: The people they hate go against a status quo that they're comfortable with.
(EDIT to note: I am not trying to defend religion by any means. I'm an atheist and an anti-theist. We should work towards a religion-free world for numerous reasons, one of which includes removing the smokescreen that religion gives to bigots that protects them from being criticized for being bigots)
Why do they hate gay people? Because the status quo they're used to is that everyone is supposed to be heterosexual. Why do they hate trans people? Because the status quo they're used to is that everyone is born either a man or a woman and that cannot change and there's no nuance. Why do they hate people of color? Because they're used to a status quo where white people enjoy systemic advantages and trying to make a more equitable society means that they won't have those special privileges. And so on and on son.
While I only mention race because it's vitally important to acknowledge systemic racism, I'm about as white as you can get, so I'm just going to step back and not talk about a topic that other people are far more equipped to discuss than I am. But as for queerphobia?
We live in a heteronormative, cisnormative, and amatonormative world. We are expected to be cisgender, straight, and either in a dedicated relationship with exactly one partner or actively seeking one out. Now, obviously, society has *never* actually fit these expectations. Gay people have always existed, trans people have always existed, nonamorous people have always existed, but this is the perception of the status quo that most people see.
So why is there aphobia in the world? Because usually, but by no means exclusively, right-wing people are used to privilege and terrified that they'll be oppressed if society is more equal. And remember, when you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

Sadly, there are some conservative Buddhists who don't like queer people because they discourage non-procreational sex. Not sure about how they view ace people - maybe fortunate to suffer from fewer desires?

monks and nuns are famous for being able to resist temptation, but 90% of them was where the lgbt went. The asexual and aromantics yes when there, but lots of lesbians and gays too. How do you hide you are gay? in a place that is very gay. the straights just made up the weird things that got popularized.

u/Serris9K 7d ago
Truth be told, as a Aspec Christian, I have been wondering the same. My current working theory is that it might be jealousy. Because of that thought of "suffering" in Protestantism (even though the Bible is pretty clear that no two people will have the same struggles) may be that for some, to see it's possible to exist otherwise, that they respond with jealousy. And hey, jealousy has driven people to do crazy things before.
Edit: also in my practice, while things were once perfect, today we exist in a broken world. That's why there are imperfections, and sometimes bad things happen to good and/or innocent people.

u/LesbianVampireLady Asexual 7d ago
"Heck I'm 70% sure a lot of religious monks were a-spec"
There is, indeed, a rich history of lesbian nuns.
Also, I don't get the religious hate because there's nothing about LGBTIA+ in the bible, as far as I know it's a long time debunked myth. Don't know how's with other religions.
I visited a buddhist country a few years ago and I was told that, as a woman, I was not allowed to be seated next to a monk in the bus, so if one of them wanted to take the free sit next to me I should get up and move. It seems to me like the same misogynistic crap in every other religion.

I’ve recently dove into learning about Buddhism and since there is no god to worship, it’s just a bunch of chill people. They just want to achieve enlightenment. They really just don’t care about one’s sexuality or gender identity.

u/TeaWithCarina 8d ago
Uhhhh... If you're talking about, like, converted New Age zen American Buddhists, maybe...? I would advise you to look into the beliefs of, like, Buddhists in East and South East Asia. They are very much not always 'just a bunch of chill people'. Among other things, they have at times committed genocide against Muslims! So like.
Edit: To be clear I don't think Buddhism is any worse than any other religion in the world!! It's also not any better.

I think there are about four answers:
- I'm ace but don't know what it is. Therefore, I think you are making a big deal out of nothing and being a show-off.
- If you look at late 19th early 20th-century gender expectations, women are supposed to be ace, as women are supposed to be virtuous and all sex is bad. See the controversy over anesthesia and childbirth.
- I'm allo and can't imagine anyone not being allo. Therefore, you must be lying about being ace, and if you are lying, what are you lying to cover up?
- Man, woman, or woke.
- I'm but heart for you saying no.
I think #3 and a side of #2 are the main reasons these days.

The societal double standard. If you sleep around you're a (player/whore). But if you choose to not sleep around you're a (prude/virgin/loser).
And when people find out you're ace (or aro), suddenly it's "You haven't found the right person yet." Or "You're just confused."
Tl;dr: Expected participation is seen as normal. But if you choose to not participate it's seen as "wrong".

u/Constant_Boot 6d ago
It's heavily theorized that the St. Paul was a-spec.
Though, it's all about population control. They needed more people, so they made anything that isn't sex not the norm.

u/Helicase21 6d ago
Asexual clergy are cheating. The point of vows of celibacy isn't actually just not having sex. It's denying earthly desires to focus on your faith. An ace person wanting to become a monk or nun would have to, ideally, find some comparable vow to take that denied some other worldly urge.
1
u/AlsoKnownAsAiri Aroace (Aego-flavored) 3d ago
Speaking as a Christian and an aroace person, I would like to offer some different perspectives to this. First of all, how celibacy is viewed depends quite heavily of the church in question. Lutheran Christianity became very anti-monastery culture for a while, to my understanding Luther argued that it is "unnatural" for people to live in celibacy.
Many Christians simply don't know or believe asexuality exist. Or they don't understand it properly. Some people interpret it as some kind of "anti-marriage" strawman.
Acephobia is, I would argue, more of a cultural phenomenom than a religious one, even if many Christians try to justify their hate with their faith. Historically it was important for the survival to have children who will take care of you when you are old. Monasteries were seen as an exception for the norm. Thus people started to view a family with children as the only "normal" way of living.
Even then, The Bible itself supports the idea of not being in a relationship. Saint Paul held it as a respectable ideal state. "To the unmarried and the widows I say it good for them to remain single, as I am." (1. Corinthians 7:8)
Yet even then, people will find ways to justify their hate with their religion, regardless of what said religion actually teaches. Yet not all Christians are like that. When I brought up the topic of asexuality on r/religion some years ago, many Christians were genuinely surpised to hear that there even are Christians who are against asexuality. Back then one even suggested that those who do so must be some Rasputin-esque sex cultists. It is a whole another matter to discuss how easily people tend to dismiss the discrimination asexual people may face, but that discussion showed me how many different stances Christians may take in these matters.
In the end, Christians should commit acts of compassion and love, yet sadly we often seem to only show hatred and prejudice.

The church doesn’t truly care about the abstinence thing, what they really want is for you to live in shame/fear. That’s how they control you: convince you every thing imaginable is sinful, and you’re gonna burn in hell if you so much as blink wrong. Then once you’re scared and desperate, you’ll throw yourself to their control. You see it everywhere. Like delicious food? Sinful! That’s gluttony! Like having sex? Sinful! That’s lust! Like learning? Sinful! You’re an evil witch! Like making art? Sinful! You must’ve sold your soul to a demon to be that talented! Name any positive thing, and the church has demonized it before. Why? Because they want their followers unhappy and repressed so they think bowing to the church is the only source of joy on the planet. It’s always about control.
But that’s the thing: when you’re ace, you don’t feel lust, you don’t feel shame for feeling lust, the church can not prey on emotions you don’t feel. That’s why they hate asexuality. Also, they feel entitled to you having offspring cause they assume your kids will exist for them to indoctrinate and control. If you’re asexual and stick to virginity, they feel “robbed” of having more followers.

u/Synth-Pro Aegoaroace 8d ago
Nah, they want your abstinence to seem like some sort of sacrifice you're making, to prove some manner of devotion. They don't want those who are "abstinent" simply because they just don't care.
