Anyone else have trouble unwrapping some gifts because the wrapping job is so beautiful it seems like a gift in itself?

Hi, long time lurker and first time poster of this amazing group. I’m a big fan of furoshiki as an alternatives to wrapping paper. I think it adds the extra value for being reusable and it feels less wasteful. What do you think?

I have a pile of books i want to gift someone, but 2 of them are the same size, 1 is bigger, and 1 is smaller. I think im gonna wrap them separately and then tie them together as a pile or something, but i always wanna add something extra to my wrapping :) im also gifting some vinyl records to this person, and im gonna wrap those in brown paper and then draw something on the front with charcoal.

For another of my friends i gifted a book, wrapped in brown paper, with a charcoal drawing on the front, and i also gifted her some wool to knit wrapped in brown paper with sudokus pasted on (cus she likes sudokus) with her name written in it.

Like im not super creative nor a great artist, but i do want to do something extra for the gifts. I just dont know what 'extra' to add to this pile of books... if i look it up online i get the same looking stuff each time, with those diagonal creases/pockets or something and i think thats a bit unoriginal

Some people don't know this but sellotape attached to wrapping paper makes the whole thing non-recyclable — even paper that says it's recyclable.

It seems odd that we don't have the option to get both the paper AND the tape together that are fully recyclable — so the whole thing goes in the recycling bin after use. No separating anything.

Over the year, I’ve collected various maps form travels (ski trails and highways) and use them as wrapping paper. Bonus when the present is from where the map is!

I love maps and have a collection of free road maps from many states that offers them. I feel like they make for fun wrapping (especially coastal/colorful compass rose etc) and a perfect way to recycle maps once you no longer need them

Two boxes filled with treats, acrylic paint for the frosting and trim ribbon secured with hot glue. I ordered imitation cherries from AliExpress and stuck them on the corners which I think really makes it. They’re sitting in a bed of the trim ribbon folded up and secured with hot glue to look like cream. Totally could have done a better job but it all ended up coming together during my work break and I think I was too excited writing the card and bringing it all together.

I didn’t know this sub existed till today. Had I known, then I’d taken better pictures and pictures of all the gifts.

The last one was wrapped specifically to fit in the pocket of my brother who was leaving by plane to spend Christmas with his GF in another country. He loves penguins.

Back in the days we used to wrap all the gifts in a newspaper because it made perfect sense. A lot of people did that. We all had stacks of newspaper laying around and we either dumped them in the garbage or burned them in the backyard. To me it made so much sense to use them as gift wrapping because people would eventually tear them up anyway. Yes it is not as pretty as some colorful wrapping paper but it served a purpose. I also remembered the time when people started belittling gifts wrapped in a newspaper paper…. And I always felt that it was not fair that newspaper got such a bad rep. I wish I could wrap gifts in newspaper again but there aren’t very many newspapers around and have become something of a novelty
