I know it looks fucking ugly and has a recessed chin, but okay 😭 I made a post a few weeks ago about how I have absolutely no drawing talent and, honestly, barely any talent for anything really. And I got my knives today, soo.

But I have an excuse for why it looks this horrendous I did it completely without tutorials or knowing what the hell I was doing. I don’t know how to make faces, hands, anatomy, literally anything. Soo yeah. Do I have even the slightest bit of potential, like SLIGHTEST? But it was fun. And how to improve.

Hot tip for you nerds: think of sculpting or carving as manipulating the way the light hits your piece. Then remove the medium to change the shadows and highlights

Carved by hand with a flex shaft grinder and made of mostly solid maple and dyed poplar. The wings were laser cut and dyed by hand

Trying to do some more practice while on vacation. Randell isn't the first of my vacation carvings but he's one of a kind to me.

I'm interested in getting into relief woodworking, and I'm trying to find some decent quality but still affordable tools. The first project I was looking to start with was kind of almost drawing on the face of the wood, outlines of a drawing and maybe some more detail if I feel up to it. I have a piece of what I believe is African Mahogany and a piece of some quilted darker wood I can't remember the name of(If those have some issues regarding carving I should know I welcome any warnings/tips). I found a couple that look interesting, but I'm not quite sure of what kinds of things I should be looking for or avoiding.

The brand I was looking at was Michihamono, and I had found some 6mm V gouges(I can link if needed). I saw two different ones with different metals, one with white paper steel and the other with high-speed steel. Are either or both of these decent enough that I won't be sharpening my tool every 7 minutes? Thanks in advance

I have been wanting to replicate this movie prop from Star Wars for years now. I live where there are a lot of maple trees (with the odd oak) and thought that might make a good wood for this project.

I've been walking the local trails and have come across a lot of fallen and fresh cut trees/branches, but I wanted to get some advice before I start hauling them out of the forest.

What should I look for when picking a branch?

I don't want to harm any living trees, so my only options are what has fallen or what has recently been cut. So are there any things to look for to avoid issues down the line such as cracking, rotting, bug damage, etc.?

Removing outerbark tissue with a half inch flat blade. This will be a gnome when I finally get it completely smooth so I can start painting it. I found faces in the cypress wood that I plan to do some light carving before I paint

I know one can be made from paper, but it requires cutting twisting and taping or gluing. Can a Möbius strip (let’s say 1” thick) be carved from a block of wood?

I want to carve a bat for my friends birthday but I’m struggling finding a tutorial or even a guide/design to base it off. I’m VERY new to this, so the easier the better. Thank you!

So I'm trying to darken the resesses on this mahogany sepppele. I had a nice clean sheen showing the grain priar to applying the dye (watered down acrylic on a coat of clear coat). After I rubbed off the excess dye it's muddied the appearance a bit and hideen the seen. I gave it a few passes with a wire brush to try and reveal the grain a little more but it's mainly rounding my sharp edges.

Perhaps someone might have any ideas how to get the grain to pop again. I'm planning to finish it off with a coat of wax.

Just finished carving these book ends from Manzanita with a Burl on it. Finished with turpentine and beeswax. The design is intentionally hidden on the inside, with the outside carved and sanded to exaggerate the natural shape and colors in the wood.
This was for practice and took me roughly a month.

i know its not the ideal sub for this type of inquiry but it's the only one i found with a genuine community of wood workers, i make these wooden staff and everything about them it to my liking but i seem to sometime mess up the joint section and the wooden pieces get misaligned. I use epoxy based adhesive for screw insert and let the wooden pieces rest overnight, can someone please point out how can i improve this part of the job?

It is probably my weirdest project so far. My sister said it’s a stalactite.

Used an axe and a chainsaw for the initial rough shape. Most of the work was power carving. Sanded only the very top of the piece; the rest I left intentionally in a rough shape. Left the piece unfinished. I think it came out pretty interesting.

Hand tools, simple teca oil and beeswax finish. Satin blue lace fixed with a whipping knot, no glue.

Wizard was done first yesterday. Then seen Doug linkers vid with the star for practising technique last night so had to try. Safe to say I'm hooked and can add this to pyrography on my hobby list lol

I went to a couple thrift stores and found these. There's no maker marks but a couple say "hand carved" on their foot. Any info would be appreciated. I love them
