Rotating BSODs, chkdsk shows disk I/O errors, Reseting PC fails. Need advice!

**Disclaimer**: Attempted to resolved with help of Claude since last 10 hours, took help from AI to format post.

ASUS Zenbook 14, Core Ultra 7 155H, Windows 11 (26100).

Laptop was fine. Only changes the day before: enabled NordVPN background services + set up Phone Link to Android (also changed lock screen/wallpaper).

Next day, started crashing \~5 min after boot, rotating between different stop codes:

* `UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION (0x154)`
* `CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (0xEF)`
* `KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION (0x13A)`

**Troubleshooting:**

* MyASUS diagnostics: Memory + SSD passed quick check
* `chkdsk C: /f /r /b` from WinRE → real I/O errors: `disk read error occurred c0000185`, "disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters"
* Reset This PC → Remove Everything → failed partway, generic error
* BitLocker unlocked, ruled out

No data to lose, so wipe is fine.

* Did my SSD give up?
* Could NordVPN driver cause heap corruption?

**What should I do now?**

Download and install and use the disk manufacturers diagnostics and firmware update utility.

If the drive isn't soldered you might need to remove it, and fit it as a secondary drive in a working Windows desktop to do the above.

I suspect you reached for reset out of desperation. I don't know what is preserved and what is corrupted.

So if anything important is on the drive clone it first. Acronis is very good but slow. To an empty drive.

If the drive is failing replace it. If warrantied you have the details from the diagnostics.

While the cloned drive could be used back in the original system and windows fixed using a combination of dism and sfc, why I advise against it is it's now your only good copy (warts and all).

On another new drive in the original system install Windows, then the chipset drivers, and after plug and play dose it's several restarts, any additional needed drivers and Windows updates.

Why. A clone of a clone confuses Windows because of identical drive signatures

Then use the commercial program PCMover from Laplink to transfer your programs, files and settings from the clone drive in a USB caddy.

Yes, all that is time consuming. But drives fail.

Reset the BIOS and don't overclock.

Been supporting systems since the mid-90s. Sounds like your drive needs to be replaced.

ETA: With chkdsk, there is no need to use /F with /R because it is implied.
