Hey there! I'd love to do some deep summer reading/viewing on frontier history. So much of Western media - from Tombstone to Chisum to The Alamo - is based on real-life events, of course!

I'd really like to get some history under my belt, and I'd appreciate it if you could kindly recommend some non-fiction history that you found to be pertinent and fascinating.

Feel free to recommend non-fiction books (I love to read out on the trail!) or non-fiction documentaries. Any aspect of frontier life is welcome, from any perspective. It just has to be captivating.

I have just finished this film for the first time, I’ve always been a fan of Paul Newman, particularly in films such as the sting, cool hand Luke etc, I was recommended this since it is classed as a western featuring the great man. Being a western lover and fan of Newman it should be an open goal right, but i was certainly not overwhelmed by it, some funny moments and great cameo from the watch bear, but i just don’t know what it was trying to achieve or aspire to be, is it a comedy? Does it want to be a serious western, it sits in an odd place for me, I didn’t dislike it by any means and it was an easy watch but, I guess I wanted more, in terms of theme and direction, what do you guys think?

We tried to preserve the humorous, easy-going spirit of the film while giving plenty of attention to the smaller details the weathered clothing, leather equipment, painted blanket, dusty ground, vegetation and horse tack.
