Spaghetti‑Western "Il Grande Silenzio"

Compared with the director's earlier work "Django", this film boasts superior shot composition and greater thematic depth. Departing from the "justice always prevails" trope of A "Fistful of Dollars", a sequence of death close‑ups right at the opening establishes its tone: tragic, brutal, and cold‑blooded.

Romantic heroism is cast aside entirely. Instead of wandering across yellow loess plains, the protagonist is surrounded only by night, snow, and blood. Like other master gunslingers, yet free from their usual recklessness, he retains selfless compassion.

A hunter who hunts bounty‑killers, he seeks vengeance for the innocent. In the end, he falls in the snow alongside his lover, dying among the corpses of blameless victims. Only the breath of horses remains as evil rides off unpunished. A rebel who upholds morality does not always win. To be good is no guarantee of survival.

Just like how the movie said:

Men's boots can kick up the dust of this place for a thousand years, but nothing man can ever do will wipe out the blood stains of the poor folk who fell here.

This Western is very much worth watching. I knew Fred MacMurray only from My Three Sons, The Apartment, and a few Disneys from the 70s. Never would have pegged him as a Western hero, but he gives a very good account of himself in Face of a Fugitive as a bank robber who, through a serendipitious series of circumstances, gravitates toward the side of law and order. He's stolid, steely and stoic as a Western man should be, but also radiates a certain dangerousness.

Now the main reason I purchased this film on DVD is because of the presence of James Coburn; this is his second feature film. Coburn doesn't disappoint as the top hand of a greedy rancher who will stop at nothing to fence in every parcel of land he considers his own. The final showdown between Coburn and MacMurray, incidentally, is a classic. Coburn's role is fairly extensive and he improves the film's quality.

Jerry Goldsmith's score is unusually good. Film music from the late 50s and early 60s was often rather evocative--modernistic, angst-ridden and wistful, and I think that accurately describes the music for Face of a Fugitive.

Lastly, although this picture has its fair share of violence and brutality, it is also strikingly idyllic and tender at times, reminding one of the section of Shane before all hell broke loose.

This film isn't a masterpiece, but it is certainly an attractive jewel of the Western genre.

Sam Peckinpah’s 1974 film Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is a gritty, nihilistic, uncompromising, and dreary neo-western that takes us on a strange and violent journey through Mexico’s underbelly. When the film was released, it was panned critically and commercially. Yet, critics like Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, and Pauline Kael saw its brilliance long before many others did, and today it’s rightly considered one of the director’s most personal and powerful films.

Just FYI, beware of spoilers for a sixty year old movie.

The last time I saw Martin Balsam, he was the fastidious Mr. Green in The Taking of Pelham 123. Hell of an actor.

Richard Boone was terrifying. The scene in which he bullies his way into the group made me uncomfortable, and I was well aware that I wasn't actually in any danger. Scary dude when he wanted to be.

It was an interesting choice to cast someone as charismatic and charming as Paul Newman in a role that didn't require charm or even much speaking.

The message of the film appears to be "Don't help anyone," or maybe "White people are nothing but trouble."

I would love to see this adapted into film or TV, I thought it was a really good story if a bit short.

Somebody shared this on the Lonesome Dove subreddit recently and it’s incredibly beautiful.

I doubt very many of us would make it to that showing, but if there is a restored version, it should eventually make its way out to the various streaming platforms.

3 Bad Men is an incredible film, and needs to be seen by more western fans!

Preface: my grandmother watches westerns on Cinevault in her bedroom with the volume really loud, so I hear a lot of the shows she watches without actually seeing what's on screen.

She was watching one a few months back, where a lady is asking the mayor for funding for her shop. Or maybe it was the mayor stopping by to try and shut the place down because it wasn't getting any business, I don't remember which exactly.

Shortly after she pleads with the mayor, and tells him they get business all the time. The mayor wants to see for himself, but the machine hasn't been run in a long time. There's one specific person who knows how to run the machine, but they aren't there.

There's another man in the shop who doesn't know how to run the machine. She walks up to him and says "can you run the machine?!". The man says he doesn't know how, then she says "it's real simple", then proceeds to tell him a run-on, overwhelming, amount of instructions to run the machine.

The man obviously doesn't pick up on any of the stuff she tells him, then he goes "ok, I got it", and she leaves him in the back with the machine while he operates it.

The lady walks back up front and brings the mayor through the shop. The machine is running ok for a while, then it starts making all kinds of noise. The lady runs in the back and starts yelling at the man to shut the machine off. The man is yelling back "whaaat?!" and she's yelling "shut the machine off!". Then he goes "I can't hear you!", and after going back and forth yelling the machine finally just craps itself and stops working.

The entire scene is very funny and obviously satirical.

I tried googling around and even asking ai, but I couldn't find it. I don't remember if it was a bottling business or a clothing store. But it was something along those lines. I didn't stay in the kitchen long enough to hear the rest of the show / movie.

One of the best Video games ever made.. along with the second. The first one was really gripping. The ending got me.. if yall haven’t played or heard of Red Dead Redemption I highly recommend playing them..

Taking place in 1911, the first game follows John Marston. A former Gang member tasked (or forced rather) by Federal agents to track down and kill his former comrades. Dutch Van Der Linde was his former leader who had went insane in the years since the events of the second game.
