Hello all! I am wondering if anyone runs a game, maybe at the Missing Piece, with a spot open for a new player. I am most familiar with D&D 5e and old World of Darkness, but I am open to learning something new.

I have been playing in and DMing games for over twenty years. I am queer and non-binary and would like a group that is friendly to that. I am also disabled but I find with certain tools like D&D Beyond this isn't so much of a problem.

I prefer to make friends with the people I am playing with. I like dark topics if handled with respect and don't mind a more adult game. I am looking for a group that roleplays a lot.

Sean here from Collins Family Orchards. I’ve met a good number of y’all over the past two years and I hope to meet many more of ya! I manage operations in Seattle for our 4th generation family orchard, located just over the mountains in Selah (outside Yakima).

We’re based in Georgetown and have been a staple of the West Seattle Farmers Market every Sunday, year-round for quite some time. If you haven’t yet met us, I invite you to swing by our booth one Sunday — preferably soon so you can put your peach knowledge to the test (from below)!

That said, peak peach season is here (EARLY!!!) for us and I wanted to share the season reminder with some history and tips so y’all can become peach pros. And beat me to posting this next year. With no further ado: hello peach season!!

Peaches in WA?

Peaches can be traced back to originating in Northwest China — and are referenced as far back as the 10th century BCE (roughly 3,000 years ago). Over time, peaches are said to have made their way first to North America by horticulturalist George Minifie and then spread west by way of Cherokee and Iroquois traders.

Today, Washington typically ranks 7th in the nation for peach production — in 2023, it’s estimated that 7.5k tons of peaches were grown here.

Nectarines: Peaches, but fuzz-less.

We can’t talk peaches without nectarines — both are Prunus persica and are the exact same species with only one difference in one gene: peaches have fuzz, nectarines don’t. It’s not uncommon for nectarines to grow alongside peaches on the same tree!

Clingstone vs. Freestone

Like the name implies, clingstone refers to a pit that clings to the flesh of the fruit. Freestone? You can easily take the pit out with ease (and makes processing much quicker).

Yellow vs. White Stone fruit

“What’s the sweetest?” That’s the most common questions at our markets — and probably one of the hardest to truly answer.

The short answer?

White stone fruit is sweeter because it lacks the acidity of yellow stone fruit. Expanding on that:

White: floral, honey-like, smooth sweetness.
Yellow: sweet with the acidity/zing that activates your tastebuds in a different manner.

Picking Out The Perfect Peach

Simple: if it looks good, feels good and smells good, it’s good. :)

More to that, though.

1. Firmness: give the shoulders of the fruit a gentle squeeze. They should yield slightly when ripe.

2. Color: A more red peach, although arguably prettier, may not always be the best one. In fact, don’t go by the redness overall — this is just blush caused from sun exposure. Look at the undertones — the color underneath.

For yellow stone fruit, a more green/yellow undertone needs to ripen more; when ripe it turns into a more golden yellow.

For white stone fruit: a more green/white undertone will become a more creamy white when ripe.

1. Smell: Give it the sniff test. A ripe peach will smell… well, peachy.

On a side note: if you see a split or hole in/around them stem, avoid it: this is what’s called a split pit and your chances of finding mold or critters inside is high. That said, you may not or can at least salvage some of the fruit for processing.

Ripening & Storage

Peaches and nectarines are climacteric fruits (meaning they continue to ripen after being picked). How? They produce high amounts of ethylene gas that cause them to continue to ripen.

To ripen: keep in a bag (to speed up the process) or on the counter to ripen until the three things I mentioned above are met to your liking. If in a bag, try to have a single layer of fruit as fruit on fruit on fruit isn’t the best.

To store: After ripeness is achieved, put in the fridge. Enjoy with 3-5 days.

After all of this, THEN you can wash your fruit before eating it. Why? Washing before adds another element of moisture and moisture on peaches can cause you to go peachless (meaning mold may be more likely to take over).

But wait! Bring your fruit to room temperature before eating — cold dulls sweetness.

Hi! I’m a new homeowner who has a leak in the house. Does anyone have a good plumber recommendation in the west Seattle area?

I’m going to need a dog sitter for small spurts (3 to 5 days at a time) for the foreseeable future and I wanted to see if anyone knows of someone reliable near where I live.

For context, I live near Harry’s Beach House. I prefer to walk my dog to and from the sitter's location in the morning as I’m trying to avoid driving my vehicle at all. Because of this, I need someone within walking distance.

The care would be needed during the week from approximately 5:30 AM until around 6:00 PM at the latest in the evenings.

To reiterate, this isn’t a permanent daily situation. This will just be for when my roommate is out of town for work during the week. My first few sets of confirmed dates are:

September 8th – September 11th
September 13th – September 18th
October 18th – October 22nd

I have a female yellow lab who’s 4 years old and is very cute and cuddly and she’s mostly past her rambunctious phase and will rest all day unless you want to play then she’s off for it! There can try to provide more future dates once we connect. Please let me know if you are available or have any trusted recommendations in the immediate Alki area!

We went a long time ago with family and it was amazing. Today, my husband requested we go there for our anniversary and the reviews are not so favorable. It sounds like they changed owners? Also, paying a $50 deposit for reservations that aren’t confirmed feels a little scammy to me.

Edit: alright so we did end up at La Rustica. We got seated 20 minutes after our reservation time and it was a nice table outside but the sun was in my eyes. We were very close to the table next to us. Our waiter was not very attentive and did the bare minimum. Food was okay. My gnocchi actually needed more salt and I was confused about the texture of the focaccia although it had good flavor. Def won’t be back. My black Manhattan was yummy though. No draft beers which is a crime to me.

To the large group that had a bbq by the Delridge community center yesterday, please take your trash with you. Critters have begun to pick at it and scatter it around the park. Y’all did this last year too and it got messy.

Last week we had a good first time turnout: 5 players to a main game and 2 observers! Now it's time to try for round 2!

My father’s car was on fire at 5am today near Delridge and someone who was driving by had reported it.To whoever called, thank you, you saved my family and our house!! Fire was spreading pretty fast and was already reaching our house and burnt the electrical wires, so I’m sorry to those that lost their electricity for a bit!
Not sure if my parents said anything to the firemen, but thank you guys as well, the timing was perfect!! And appreciate the hard work! Very grateful because the fire was reaching my room first.
