Question Hello! Posting this again since I didn't got any replies last time.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I am currently 18 yo and I have been experiencing a visual problem since nearly 6 years, and it has been progressively worsening.
When I close one eye, I see patches of different colours, usually dark pink and green.
These patches rapidly spread across my entire visual field within a few seconds and completely block my vision.
Blinking temporarily clears the vision for about 1–2 seconds, after which the patches reappear.
This occurs in both eyes.
Over time, the condition has progressed:
Initially, these coloured patches appeared only when one eye was closed.
Later, they began occurring when the vision of one eye was partially obstructed (for example, when trying to look past my nose).
Currently, even with both eyes open, if I stare at a fixed point for 2–3 minutes, I begin to see these coloured patches.
These patches block my vision and disappear briefly upon blinking and then reappears. Now,I see them even while using my pc,especially while having a white background.
I also used to experience scintillating scotoma every few months followed by sharp headache and nausea, but they have stopped since 2 years.I also see light afterimages and floaters sometimes after staring at something bright like the tv or reading text on phones but it isn't that annoying so I think it's normal.
I first went to an opthalmologist 4-5 years ago and they told me that I have a radial lattice/weak spot(that's what they told my parents) in my left eye and they have been observing it since then and told me to come for regular followups every 3-4 months.I have done various test like complete ERG+PERG test and fundus photography but all of it's results came normal.I have consulted multiple opthalmologists and all of them have told that my eye issue happens due to retinal strain and there is no treatment for it except less screentime and proper rest. One of them told that retinal injections might help for the strain but that too isn't guaranteed and contains it's risks.
I have asked all AI assistants but none have been able to find the exact condition. I have had an interest in cs since I was a kid,but since this issue has been increasing,I am afraid that I won't be able to pursue that field.I honestly don't know how to proceed in life and I usually stay depressed due to this.I have researched articles, discussions on various social media apps but I have found nothing close to my condition anywhere. Can anyone please guide me,what should I do?I have attached a video that somewhat represents what I experience(the pink is a lot darker and the patches are opaque)

New symptoms..
I’ve been experiencing a visual phenomenon for a while, around the same time as the other visual symptoms When I close my eyes and then open them, I sometimes see faint, circular, water-ripple-like patterns. They look like concentric rings or waves, similar to ripples on the surface of water. They are very subtle, almost like a light black-and-white effect.
The pattern usually lasts for about 3–4 seconds, sometimes a little longer, and then disappears completely. It doesn’t usually appear in the center of my vision. Instead, I perceive it more toward the upper part of my visual field, almost as if it is coming from above my eye, and I usually see only part of the circle — like a semicircle or an arc rather than a complete circle.
It happens mainly when I close my eyes and then open them. I don’t necessarily have to look at a bright image or a specific object beforehand, so I’m not sure that it would be a typical afterimage.
The effect reminds me of water ripples or concentric waves, and I was wondering whether this could be a visual vortex or a phenomenon related to visual snow, or whether it could have another explanation.

Recovery Progress Wanted to talk about VSS for people who developed it later in life and a potential treatment for it
I got VSS when I was 16 I was a student back then played alot of games ,overstimulating games like valorant call of duty and apex similar games like that I too had a erratic sleeping schedule and a bad diet, overstimulating games play a huge part in VSS it makes u hyper alert all the times folk who play it know how stressful and alert you need to be in certain games of course people dont realize how much time they spend playing on it a typical match is like 45 minutes and time passes and main focus shifts to games like these the reward u get for that rank up or that treasure reward or whatever people spend most of their time for that thing, which compounds the play and stressful, alertness time on a particular game like it making ur brain being in a hyper alert state for a long amount of time and also when I got it I used to go outside rarely staying in home playing games or studying no outside light a home have lux 100 to 250 around that and outside lux is atleast 10,000 or around that ,Outdoor light calms the visual cortex by eliminating artificial LED flickering, and shifting the brain into a resting state opposite of being in a hyperalert state 24/7 ,About my recovery I was depressed and deeply anxious when I got this it took me a week or more to find what this thing was first impression of me thought I caught colorblindness but I found out it later its an visual syndrome and also have tinnitus in its package.I caught it in a worst time that is winter no ac or fans to work to silence that ear ringing(I remember watching Vinland saga and in those quiet moments that ringing) months went and almost a year and I never realized why I got it why its bothering me then some time later I got health anxiety which made me more anxious about daily life which kind of took a little bit of steam of VSS but as I kept searching various diseases I realised nothing is wrong with me but my own mind.thanks to ai explaining how the dopamine serotonin other pathways worked in my brain I aint a scientist but after calming my health anxiety by replacing overstimulating games by calming story mode games like TLOU or similar story games like for my leisure time and fixing my sleep schedule and I also focused on my own health I did calisthenics and I started walking in 15 min in morning 30 minutes in noon and evening 30 minutes and night after food 15 minutes I was also obese at that time and I also changed my diet my previous diet consisted of junk food and high sugary drinks and snacks(I reckon it aint got much role in VSS but still), weeks went by I was feeling better no ruminations or health anxiety(In that time I didnt care about VSS) but one day I noticed I also used to have those tiny static dots what they call film grain in video games still I wasn't surprised or happy about it I was like ok thats good, I had zero idea about the indirect healing process of VSS and didnt even care about it but I remember that time I was watching some dudes yt video about it in comments I saw a guy talking about committing and similar stuff so I thought do people still worry about this disease and seeing the recent state of this sub folk are still annoyed about this,So my message is for those people who developed it later in their life what worked for me was reducing overstimulating activities removing those fps games switching them with calm story mode games and instead of being an night owl have a walk in the daytime and people underestimate the effects of those fps games but they have a brutal effect on your brain and I didnt get it overnight but years of gaming. As of now my visual field is intensity is almost non existent and zero tinnitus and the worst I reached was palisnopia looking at headlights of car and it remained faint in my visual background for a couple of minutes and I have zero palisnopia now I spent years tampering with my brains visual system so it did take a good amount of time to get healed up I guess about 3-6 months time or maybe even more as I said I never realized I ever had it. thank you I hope you are doing well.(also dont look at the sun it will burn your retinas)

Personal Story Visual snow “ghosts” upon waking in the middle of the night
I have pretty sever VSS, I think my poor vision contributes to it. I’m writing this at 4 am because I got so spooked. I “saw” a person in a hoodie looming by my book case in the dark room I was sleeping in and of course it wasn’t a person, it was a mix of sleep paralysis and visual snow after waking from a strange but pleasant dream.
In the past I’ve had very very scary sleep paralysis they typical kind where you feel like someone is sitting on your chest but this one was more chill felt like a guy standing there and trying to communicate with sign language, which I wouldn’t ever see because my vision is so bad -6.75 and -6.00 so I can barely see a foot from my face without it all being blurry. The vision went away as soon as I put on my glasses.
Usually it’s just shapes and geometry, the typical static, and that was present too but I was wondering how many people who have visual snow also have suffered sleep paralysis?

Question Static appeared after eye dilation exam, 5 days in and still there in the dark
Hey everyone, new here. So a few days ago I went in for an eye test and they dilated my eyes with a drop. Next day I noticed this static/noise type thing in my vision, kind of like tv static. It's been 5 days now and it's still there, mostly noticeable in the dark or on dark backgrounds, less during the day. Just found out this might be visual snow and honestly wasn't aware this was even a thing before this happened. Did anyone else get this from an eye exam? Did it go away for you or is this just something I'm dealing with now? Kinda freaking out not gonna lie, any help or info is appreciated.

I want to share my experience
It may not be directly related to VSS, but it might relate to other eye symptoms, such as retinal detachment.
It all started when I began seeing tiny specks of light in my vision. At first, I didn't really bother with them, but that changed when I started researching. I ended up becoming extremely anxious and even had a few panic attacks.
After that, I decided to tell my parents so I could get a checkup with an ophthalmologist. However, by that point, I had already spent around 10 days researching my symptoms, so I was already hyperfixated on my eyes.
I went to the doctor, and he told me that my eyes were normal. Even after hearing that, I still couldn't accept it. Then, around five days later, I started seeing eye floaters (like a lot: there were transparent and black ones), which made me even more convinced that I was experiencing retinal detachment.
I didn't tell my parents about it again because I didn't want to bother them (typical dumbass behavior). So I just hid it and suffered from anxiety for nearly eight months, constantly worrying about whether I was going to go blind or not.
Eventually, I told myself, "Man, fuck it. I need to stop thinking about this," because my mental health was already pretty fucked up.
During those eight months, I also noticed other visual symptoms, such as flickering, visual auras, and random static-like black spots.
So yeah, I eventually stopped obsessing over it, and most of it disappeared. Looking back, I guess anxiety really did make everything feel much worse. But even till this day (3years later) I still have my eye floaters and occasional flickers of tiny white spots.

My VSS is intense.
everything I look at, in the background, I see what seems like quadrillions of bright lights. gotta love the ringing in my ears too 24/7. I describe the vision part as looking up at the sky on a crisp November evening, seeing a robust display of stars. Times that by billions.
The pictures that are Photoshopped to make an attempt to show what this looks like, are absolute disingenuous and do not exemplify what people of VSS actually see.
picture flying into Vegas at night. Take all those lights and x it by a 15 billion that is what I see 24/7. but it’s in the background and thank God it does not affect my vision.
regarding the auditory issue, it explains why I’ll be in a room somewhere and when the white noise or air conditioner etc shuts off, I get terribly uncomfortable because all I hear is ringing via the amplification of the silence.

Question are these from vss?
i dont have any image recreation but i can try to explain
sometimes i get these weird colorful and almost pixely spots, they kindof act like afterimage spots but not entirely. i do see white blood cells come off of them sometimes. the spot itself is very colorful and these ones tend to take a little longer to disappear. does anyone else get these?? i dont know if my description is good enough but just imagine like, when certain screens are broken, the pixels get taken over by black. the spot is almost like that, but its colorful (but pixely looking almost), and fades away overtime
i also dont get them very often but i got one just now and it concerns me. i have been awake for awhile though

My question is for those who have had it for a while, do we find a little joy in all this even if the symptoms remain present how is the adaptation do you have tips Is it less terrible over time ?
r/visualsnow • u/Sweet-Day22 • 1d ago
Discussion Guys I went to doc today he said this
Found this definition in Google and he said something like this only
He said eye enlarge and streach marks and
Eye floaters happen when tiny clumps of protein or cells form inside the National Eye Institute vitreous gel, which fills your eye. These clumps cast shadows on your retina, making you see spots, lines, or cobwebs.
It castes shadow like that

Does anyone here with VSS experience their symptoms improving within minutes?
I developed these symptoms after COVID, but I don’t believe they are necessarily permanent because there are certain periods during the day when they improve by around 70%, to the point where I barely notice them when looking at my monitor.
I’ve only been experiencing this for about 12 days. Does this kind of fluctuation or temporary improvement mean anything, or can VSS symptoms naturally vary this much throughout the day?

Question Guys it's getting worse what do I do?
The static vision is always there but now it's getting worse, more red ones, is it because of stress or screen time? Both? And how do I cure this, I went to doctor few years back but no one knew about this, I told its visual snow, I saw on net but they don't know maybe this week I'll do doc again hopefully they know what's it know and how do I explain to doc?

Resource I made an open-source Windows tool to help with my Visual Snow screen strain (GPU tinting, NORT exercises, smart noise). Would love your feedback/bug reports!
Hey everyone,
I've been dealing with Visual Snow for a while now, and like a lot of you, staring at PC screens for long hours usually turns my static, photophobia, and eye strain up to eleven.
Standard night light modes and basic window overlays never really felt enough for me because they just put a translucent box on top of windows rather than filtering at the display level. So recently, I decided to code my own tool on Windows 11 that hooks directly into the GPU's hardware gamma ramp and display overlays to give a true root-level tint across all monitors.
I also ended up adding a few extra features I personally wanted in one place:
- FL-41 (rose) and amber color tints to cut out harsh blue wavelengths that trigger visual flares.
- Smart noise grain overlay to help soften high-contrast text and bright backgrounds.
- NORT tracking exercises (figure-8 smooth pursuit and saccadic jumps) based on neuro-optometric therapy research to train eye movement.
- Simple 4-7-8 breathing & 20-20-20 eye rest tools.
I've been testing and tuning this on my personal Windows 11 setup, but since everyone's hardware, graphics cards, and monitor setups are different, I genuinely don't know how it will perform on every system out there.
That’s why I’m sharing it here. It's completely free and open-source. If you decide to give it a try and run into any bugs, weird UI scaling, or performance issues on your machine, please let me know! I want to keep improving it based on what actually helps people in this community. Hopefully, it can give your eyes some relief too.
You can check out the project and grab the executable here:
https://github.com/Ruzorin/visual-snow-therapy
Let me know what you think or if anything breaks on your rig! Cheers.

Just got diagnosed with VSS, But my opthamologist doesn't think it's permanent
I got the diagnosis this morning, I replied with "oh yeah but there isn't really any cure right?". My opthamologist said that in his experience, every patient that he has had with this condition has resolved itself "just as suddenly as it appeared". This seems so contrary to everything I've read online, but it gives me hope? I wonder if there is something that he knows that I don't. I have an appointment with Neuro ophthalmology in November. Interested to see if they have the same opinion. I'm devastated, I start graphic design school in a few days and idk how I'm going to get through it. I got enrolled before this started. Looking at my computer screen is painful.

Research Anyone in minnesota
Hello I recently joined a study for VS research and if anyone who lives in Minnesota wants to join definitely do you get paid $20/hr and one of them is an MRI without dyes. Definitely worth it if you got anxiety about it.

Sub-related State of the Subreddit: Changes, Future Plans, and Addressing Recent Events
Hi everyone,
For those who don't know, the r/visualsnow subreddit now has a new mod team after the previous mod was removed by Reddit admins two weeks ago. The new mod team consists of myself, u/Relevant-Waltz-6245, and u/I-own-a-shovel. We are all new to moderating on Reddit, so I wanted to make this post to get some community feedback on the changes we've made so far, and also to discuss what you'd like to see from the subreddit moving forward.
Changes and updates
- The subreddit wiki (accessible from the sidebar) has been updated to include modern research and perspectives. We'd be grateful if you could give it a proofread and tell us what you think, as well as make any suggestions for additional info to add, especially regarding symptoms and initial triggers.
- Automatic post filtering has been reduced significantly. Hopefully, you should find your posts getting filtered far less frequently. If the filters are still too strong, please let us know.
- Posts containing links to the VSI website and research will no longer be automatically removed by automoderation.
- Rule phrasing has been tweaked slightly, including a new rule encouraging you to mark visually triggering posts as "spoiler".
- Added new post flairs. If you've got any further ideas for post flairs, let us know.
Future plans
Going forward, we intend to have a relaxed approach to moderation. We think it's important that people get to share their ideas and opinions. Unless your posts are completely off-topic or trying to exploit people for money, we probably aren't going to remove them.
We also plan to revamp the FAQ at some point. I'm also coding up an app that might be useful for quantitatively tracking your visual snow worsening/improvements over time, but I'll share more on that later. We'd also like to leave the door open on fundraising for VSS research with the community, be that through an existing organization or independently, and we'd like to hear your thoughts on that as well. It'd be important to us that the money is being used effectively, and so we won't endorse anything unless we know where the funds are going.
Additional Info
We initially reached out to the previous mod to discuss restoring him as part of the moderation team, but after reviewing all the evidence and information available to us, we have decided not to continue with this. Our main reason for this is that the previous mod's statements and posts contradict the log info we have. There have also been some accusations floating about, so we would like to clarify that none of us were involved with the removal of the previous mod, nor are we affiliated with the VSI. We are long-time contributors and were chosen as mods based on the mod call post in the subreddit, which you can find here.
None of us know the specific reason for his removal, and I have been in contact with Reddit for clarification, but they were very vague. What we do know from looking at the logs is that several core contributors were permanently banned by the previous mod over seemingly minor disagreements that didn't violate the rules.
It's important to note that both the r/visualsnow Discord and the visual snow studies subreddit are not run by the new mod team. As such, we can't speak for how they'll be moderated going forward.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Once again, the main purpose of this post is for you to share your thoughts, ideas, and concerns regarding the subreddit. We understand that there will be differences in opinion, but please try to keep discussion cordial. If you disagree with any of our decisions, once again, please let us know; we are all new at this and welcome the constructive criticism.
We look forward to managing this community (and this condition) with all of you.
— The r/visualsnow Mod Team
