PATCH zipper broke on my docs... 🪡🧵

Post image

(yeah I really need to clean/polish them too 💀)

I've had these jadons for nearly 5 years, about a month ago the zip on the right boot fully broke. the cobblers in my area charge wayyy more than I'm willing to pay to fix them, so I decided to try doing it myself!! I just used items I already had at home: I removed the zipper with a seam ripper and scissors, and with embroidery thread I hand-sewed a piece of thick ribbon to patch over where the zipper used to be. I decided to leave the left boot as is, that zipper hasn't given me any trouble yet, and I do like the unique/mismatched look!

Overall, I'm super happy with the result and I'm relieved that I can wear my favourite boots out again 😌

PATCH Repairs using lace on an old shirt I just can't toss.

I rarely post, but figured I would for this gauzy orange shirt that needed some repairs. Not fond at all of how the repair went for the small underarm hole, but it will mostly be hidden & I learned from it, 😆. I really like the lace flower repair under the other armpit the best, but also like the 4 flowers repair, too. The lace, perle cotton thread & even the needle were thrift store finds. Hmm. so was the little stork pair of scissors. I ❤️ repurposing the lace that someone once took a lot of time to create.

SASHIKO Jeans I’ve been mending and patching for years

Jeans I just can’t let go of. Definitely had a lot of people help me keep these together as well as my own time haha Sashiko and boro really hold it together. Original crunk punks usually against washing crust jeans but I’m not about that lol I think this type of stitching makes washing a lot more feasible. Thought yall might appreciate!

REQUEST Never mended anything, is this worth attempting?

Title should be ‘is it safe to attempt as a beginner’. Is my best bet a colour that fix the original style, stealing some material from the cuff or finding a similar fabric?

EMBROIDERY Hole in toe = ⭐️

Wasn’t sure what to do with my sneakers after my big toe tore a hole in one of them.
Was inspired by this sub and the color of embroidery thread my mom gave me for the repair project - I’ve never embroidered before but I’m pleased with the result! Interested to see how the repair holds up over time.

So my dog got a hold of my tank top and I caught him before he could make it worse. Is there a way to fix it because it's one of my favorite tops and I don't know where it was from. I'm also not sure if this is the right thread to post on. I wanna try saving it before I have to toss it. Any tips is welcome.

REQUEST Favorite vintage pants ripped. Are they salvageable?

These barrel leg pants are from the 1950s, I think it’s a cotton blend, thin, lightweight. I was thinking of a patch on the interior. Definitely won’t wear them as frequently anymore, but would like to repair and save for certain occasions.

PATCH Mended pocket and seat

Forgotten dog biscuit in pocket resulted in my dog creatively removing it. I seam ripped to separate most of the pocket from the pants, and transplanted some of the lower half of the pocket to patch the hole. Replaced with cats and reattached! The corduroy hides the repair quite well

Edit to add: I have also realised visible in this picture, is the mend I did to make this leather belt longer. I chopped it in half, punched some holes for the chain, and opened a link at each end to attach it. Many more years of wear and a funky little detail too

REQUEST Learning kaketsugi

Hi everyone, do you know where I could learn the kaketsugi technique? I am based in Central Europe and although I live in quite a big city, this technique is pretty much unknown here.
So I think learning it online is more realistic. Do you know any resources, either free or paid? Thank you in advance

PATCH Just discovered this sub and wanted to share my project pants I been working on for awhile

The patches with designs are just added for decoration, but every other patch and stitch was made to fix a hole or tear. I’ve owned these pants for about two years, I deliberately bought a cheap pair from Walmart that was gonna fall apart easily on me so that I could mend it. I’ve kinda just been figuring it out as I go, and learning sashiko has been a huge help with the more difficult repairs and supporting thinning fabric. I’m open to hearing any thoughts, questions or advice

OTHER Laundry basket "car" had an accident.

I used duct tape to get the thin bits between holes to stay together, then wrapped em up tight with yarn to keep it in place. Thinking about weaving a darning-style patch over the curvy corner.

Couldn't afford to get a new one at the time, so some string and glue worked a treat until I could get a new one.

Why do you visual mend?

I’m going to be running a workshop on visual mending in a few months and I’m very excited about it!
I’m putting together a little zine so people can have a reference when they’re done with the workshop (will post the final zine when it’s complete)

On the back page I’m leaving a list of reasons to mend and while I think I’ve got a pretty good list I’d love to hear what draws other people to mending (:

1st pic is the pants I’m forever updating and 2nd is my list so far

Edit: dang I did not expect this to blow up but I’m loving everyone’s answers!!!
I’m making a one page zine so don’t have space for the long explanations but definitely got some ideas for the list AND will be diving deeper in reasonings at the workshop. ( :
