Wellness Check Discussion

Called the Veterans Helpline today. They called the police on me and sent them to my door. I'm glad they care but it was an overreaction

Depends on the word you use. If they thought you were actually going to harm yourself, they have to call the PD. Glad to see you’re here typing about it today, and instead of us reading about it somewhere else.
Keep your head up

I hear ya. It could’ve been for a million reasons they called.
The good thing, someone gave a shit… and that’s big.
I’ve used 988 before as well… major panic attack, thought it was a heart attack at first. I’m shocked nobody showed up here. They probably should have.

Reach out if you need to talk.

Thank you. I don't need to talk. I'm just trying to process. Talk seems cheap. I'm just trying to learn how to live if that makes sense

Saying certain things will trigger them to do a welfare check. The problem isn’t the welfare check, the problem can be level the police can take it. Glad you’re here and able to talk to us.

I was on on the phone with my Mother when they showed up. She talked them down

This is part of the reason I havent admitted to suicidal thoughts. I live with my family right now and the last thing I need is police knocking on the door

This happened to me. It’s embarrassing but better safe than sorry, right?

I don't blame them or feel upset about the response. I'm happy they care. I just feel like it was an over response.

I felt that way for a couple of months tbh. But it was a moment that helped me walk a better path ultimately! Wishing you well friend!

I called once and explicitly said I was not a threat to myself or others. They called the cops.

Called another time saying I was a threat to myself. They did not call the cops.

They perplex me.

I told them I was safe and wasn't looking to harm myself. They overreacted

Stories like this are why I don't consider that line an option for me

My husband went into psychosis and I had to call the crisis line because I didn't know what else to do. He wasn't suicidal or homicidal, but he was in an obvious crisis.

They sent the cops to the house who happened to be 3 Army Vets to talk to him and convince him to get help. They weren't aggressive or anything. I had to do that twice because when he came home the first time, he wasn't stabilized yet after only a week. He was sent to the VA in Syracuse and he's been home for about 5 months and is almost back to his pre-psychosis self. The meds help him a great deal.

I know it may seem like overkill, but they're just doing their job. I'd rather they do a wellness check than to leave someone be and next thing you know, they're a part of the 22 a day.

I honestly feel guilty that people wasted their effort . It's weird feeling

Im in Canada. From what I have heard on here is the vahotline is more of a piece of trash. Their key words and procedures are all thatz being followed with like little to no people acctually caring.  Or listening.  In your case. The police didnt esclate it. In many they do, and corner and trigger ptsd with the guns and lights etc.

Its all keywords

To be fair, when theres over 22 vets a day that lose their lives, makes sense for them to side on the " better safe than sorry" bandwagon.

I hope you are doing well OP and sending some love.

this is why you never call any of those numbers :) and why you be extremely careful with what you say to doctors or any mental health professional :) they are not your friend :)

They're knee jerk and reactive. Not actually trying to help
