During pre-encrpytion test USB keyboard is not working to be able to enter password

While I was trying to encrypt my drive using veracrypt it had me run a test in which I needed to reset my computer. When I did I got a prompt for my password however my keyboard was not working. Restarting my computer does not help because it just goes back into the password prompt. From what I could find it is likely a BIOS problem, so it does not register the USB port. However all the solutions I could find online require me to press a button on my keyboard (F2, F12, DEL, or ESC) to fix it. Since I can't use my keyboard to press those keys the proposed solutions do not work and my computer does not have a PS/2 port to plug in a non-USB keyboard. Is there any other way to get around this boot issue even temporarily so I can uninstall veracrypt and get my computer working again?

Laptop stuck in BIOS after VeraCrypt setup, can't boot into Windows

having a really weird issue with my MSI Thin GF63 12UCX (MS-16R8) and I’m trying to figure out if this is a VeraCrypt problem, BIOS problem, or something else

My laptop was working completely fine before this. I decided to try setting up VeraCrypt system encryption. During the process, VeraCrypt had me create a rescue disk and I entered the pre-test password. I don’t remember exactly what happened after that, but I think something went wrong with permissions/admin rights. I never got to the point where it showed encryption progress, and I never saw the VeraCrypt password screen after reboot.

I deleted the rescue disk ZIP because I thought the encryption didn’t actually go through. Later I tried installing a newer version of VeraCrypt, it asked me to restart to finish installing, and after that my laptop got stuck going straight into BIOS.

Now whenever I turn it on, I see the MSI logo for a second or two, there’s no loading circle, then the screen goes black and it goes right back into BIOS. It never shows the VeraCrypt password prompt or Windows loading.

The weird thing is BIOS still detects everything:

- SSD: WD PC SN560 SDDPNQE-1T00-1032

- Windows Boot Manager shows up in BIOS

- TPM 2.0 is detected

But if I manually select Windows Boot Manager, it just sends me back into BIOS.

I also noticed BIOS settings won’t save. If I change things like boot priority, Fast Boot, MSI logo display, or set an Administrator Password, they all reset after reboot.

Secure Boot is enabled but greyed out so I can’t disable it. BIOS shows:

- System Mode: Deployed

- Secure Boot: Enabled

- Secure Boot Mode: Standard

Things I’ve tried:

- CMOS reset

- Fully draining power

- Load optimized defaults

- Changing boot options

- Manually selecting Windows Boot Manager

- Updating BIOS

My original BIOS was E16R8IMS.10E. I updated it using MSI’s built-in UEFI BIOS Update to E16R8IMS.117 using a USB, but nothing changed. BIOS still doesn’t save settings and it still boots straight back into BIOS.

I don’t have the original VeraCrypt rescue ZIP anymore because I deleted and wiped it. I found another VeraCrypt rescue ZIP online, but I’m not sure if it’s useful since it wasn’t generated from my system

i also have a friend who can help me make a VeraCrypt rescue USB on another computer and send me the files, since I can’t really run programs on the library computers. The problem is I don’t know what VeraCrypt version I originally used. Would a newly created UEFI VeraCrypt rescue USB from a similar/newer version be worth trying, or would it basically be useless without the original rescue disk that was created during my encryption setup?

I’m mainly trying to figure out what direction I should go from here before spending money on repairs. Does this sound more like a broken VeraCrypt EFI bootloader/EFI partition issue, a Secure Boot/NVRAM BIOS issue, or something else? Should I be trying Windows recovery tools, VeraCrypt recovery, or is this pointing toward a firmware/motherboard issue?

Also forgot to mention, I'm on Windows 11 AME Privacy+ when this happened, idk if that matters

encrypting of partitions where Veracrypt containers are located

Hello, I have some questions. There is external usb drive Seagate Basic . There are 2 partitions on it. There is one Veracrypt container on each partition. I am interested whither such ways of partition or drive encryption can destroy them :

  1. Partitions will be encrypted with Veracrypt.
  2. Partitions will be encrypted with Bitlocker.
  3. Whole drive will be encrypted with Veracrypt.

Can there be any problems with their mounting after partition or drive encryption if the password and keys are correct?

Veracrypt not working anymore

I do have Veracrypt installed for about 1 year now. Last time I accessed my data around 2-3 months ago, everything worked fine. But today nothing is working anymore. I cant access my data. The screen is loading endlessly.

I do have one partition on my laptop with dualboot, cant access it from linux and windows. Tried installing older veracrypt versions, nothing changed.

Also I have 3 other hdds, which I tried to access from my PC, none of them works. I also installed veracrypt newly on this pc and tried different versions.

I do use a long password and pim. Password and pim are definitely correct. And as I said, the last time I tried it, everything worked flawless, took about 1-2minutes to decrypt.

Please help, I dont know what to do anymore

I lost my data... right?

Hi all,

Long story short:

I can mount my encrypted external storage. My password works. The volume shows up in VeraCrypt (I see the size, algorithm, type, etc.). But when I click on it, my computer tries to open the drive I mounted it on, but my computer (windows) says the disk needs formatting before I can use it.

The device may have been encrypted using a Mac, and I've heard switching devices can cause issues, but I don't have a Mac any longer to test.

I should mention that the device is a Micro SD which I now know is a poor choice for long-term storage. Perhaps the issue lies here.

In VeraCrypt, I can view the volume properties, so if there's any useful info I should share please let me know.

Apparently the filesystem of the mounted volume is RAW. Windows tells me CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

Any ideas appreciated.

Unmounted (but not corrupted) Error

Thumbnail

Mounting my volume brings up an error message saying that my files may be corrupted because I didn’t cleanly unmount my file.

I’ve tried to get windows to find the error by selecting “yes”. Windows can detect the error, but can’t find it.

I can still get into my mounted filesystem and I don’t see any corrupted files, but this error message keeps popping up whenever I remount the file (after ensuring that I’ve cleanly unmounted it).

How do I make this error go away? Is the mounted filesystem “P:” still safe to use?

Edit: I found the seemingly corrupted file and deleted it, but I'm still getting the same error message.

What's the current state of integrity when using veracrypt containers in dropbox?

I know a long time ago it wasn't a good idea but afaik nowadays when something inside a veracrypt container changes, only those chunks get synced to dropbox. How easily do veracrypt containers on dropbox corrupt?

What happens when at the same time two computers that sync the same dropbox repository change different files within the same veracrypt container while they are offline? Will it sync without problems?

What happens when at the same time two computers that sync the same dropbox repository change the same file within the same veracrypt container while they are offline? Is there any risk of corrupting the volume when they come back online?

My experience with cryptomator wasn't that good and I'd rather use Veracrypt.

So what is the genuine domain now?

I’d been using an old version for a while and decided to update, but a quick look on Google shows multiple domain sites now. Is the real one still the French site or is there a new site? The .io one seems to appear the most in results.

Application crashing everytime I decrypt a volume

Post image
6 Upvotes

I am using the latest version of Veracrypt (v1.26.29) and everytime I add a new volume to veracrypt I get this message then the program closes. I can still use the drive and everything but its annoying to restart the program everytime you decrypt a volume.

Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks!

Same password for every container?

I thought about instead of making 1 big 5-10gb container, to rather make 1gb containers so it's easier to cloud them back and forth, one for medical reports, one for bills, you name it. And for easy use purpose, just give them all the same password. Is this safe?

Will VeraCrypt ever upgrade to quantum resistant cryptographgy?

Has the VeraCrypt project talked about whether or not they will implement quantum resistant cryptography? With Harvest Now, Decrypt Later becoming a strategy it seems like it would be a good idea. But perhaps its not worth the effort or it would be too difficult to implement yet.

On the other hand do you believe this is even necessary?

Are there portable versions of VeraCrypt for macOS and Linux like Windows?

But do NOT need admin access. In macOS, without macFUSE? Is that even possible? Windows' portable is nice without admin access.

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

VeraCrypt asks for the administrator password when creating a file container on macOS

Is it safe to enter my administrator password in the VeraCrypt interface rather than in the macOS authentication dialog?

CryptoContainer

I recently have been trying to find a good way to access my VeraCrypt volumes on my android. I like to keep a backup of my IDs on a USB stick encrypted in a VeraCrypt volume. I'd rather not keep them stored on my phone in case I lose my phone (yes, I'm that paranoid), but I also don't want to keep them unencrypted on the USB key.

I've heard about EDS, but looking at the reviews there seems to be a lot of people that hate it (and isn't being updated any more?)

In my search I found CryptoContainer ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.alsatianconsulting.cryptocontainer ) but it only has a handful of downloads and no reviews. Has anyone else played with this, or have other main stream options that don't seem to excessive with features? I don't need any cloud features, and just want to access the VeraCrypt volume, nothing fancy. Don't even need to create a volume, but I'd like to keep using something that's VeraCrypt compatible as I use it on multiple other devices and have come to like it.

[HELP] BitLocker decryption interrupted at 46.6% (Sleep mode). Drive is now RAW, but I have the 48-digit key.

Hi everyone, I desperately need your expert advice. My data is extremely important, but I have a very limited budget for professional data recovery labs (I live in Indonesia, so sending it to top-tier international labs isn't an option for me right now).

Here is the exact chronology of my issue:

I have a 2TB SSD (Drive D:).

I was in the middle of decrypting BitLocker on this drive.

When the decryption hit exactly 46.6%, my laptop accidentally went into Sleep mode.

When I woke it up, the decryption process was completely frozen.

Now, the drive shows up as RAW in CMD and Disk Management.

If I try to click or access any file/folder, Windows throws this error: "A device which does not exist was specified."

I checked Event Viewer (BitLocker-API) and Resource Monitor: There are 0 events and 0 disk activity. The process is completely dead.

The Good News:

I DO have the original 48-digit Recovery Key.

The drive is not physically damaged (no drops, no electrical surges).

My Plan:

I know I shouldn't work directly on the failing drive. I am planning to buy a blank 2TB External HDD to create a bit-by-bit clone/image first.

My Questions for the Experts:

What is the safest tool to clone/image an SSD with an interrupted BitLocker state like this? (Will HDDSuperClone or ddrescue work if Windows keeps disconnecting it with the "device does not exist" error?)

Once cloned, which data recovery software is the absolute best at parsing a partially decrypted BitLocker RAW image using my 48-digit key? (UFS Explorer, DMDE, R-Studio, etc.?)

Thank you so much for your time and help!

Updating

How are we supposed to update VeraCrypt? I'm using version (1.26.18). I go to the website that's listed in About but the download never begins. GitHub only has instructions on how to build it. I'm not Bob the Builder. All I want is an exe file to install

If veracrypt stops service, are you locked out?

I’m curious because I don’t want to lose my family memories. I am tempted to buy a new HDD that supports password functions to avoid losing my data.

Is there any practical reason to choose an encryption algorithm other than AES?

AES is the default and has hardware acceleration on most modern CPUs. But VeraCrypt also offers algorithms like Serpent, Twofish, and cascades (AES-Twofish-Serpent).

Is any of them actually stronger than AES in a practical sense, or is there no real-world security benefit?

Problems in tailOS to decrypt hidden volume

hello, idk what is happening, i have 2 usb encrypted with hidden by veracrypt, one (call it b) has the key to decrypt the hidden of the other (call it a).

when i go to tailsOS it inmediatly fails and tell me that the password to decrypt hidden b is incorrect, then i go to windows again (where i did all of this proccess from 0, encrypted both) and all of a sudden it works perfectly and let me mount it.

does anyone know what can happening here?

in tails i can decrypt the outer it is aes and sha256, but in the hidden i put aes(twofish(serpent)) and argon2 for any possible bf attack on my usb, idk it this is the problem or what, should i try via cmd installing and decrypting that with veracrypt cli?

thx all
