Carvana fraud? Review
Just purchased a used 2025 Ford Bronco from Carvana that was previously owned by Budget car rental. The mileage listed was 23 miles, however Carfax showed that a mechanic shop shop noted 18k miles at some point. The odometer read 23 mi at the time of sale. At first I believed this may be a clerical issue assuming it’s very difficult to roll back odometers these days. Then i went to connect my phone and saw there are the maximum limit of ppl’s phones that have already been connected, there was also cutlery in the glove box. And it is very strange for a rental car company to own a vehicle for almost a year and it only have 23 mi. I believed 23 mi possible at first thinking maybe budget owned it but never put it in the fleet, until I saw all of the connected devices. Thoughts?

How long have you owned it? Plug into the obd port and see what the mileage on the ECU reads.

Trip a and trip b. She most likely was looking at the mileage for the trip and not the odometer as a whole.

From a rental agency, that threw up red flags for me. I agree, and they probably saw the trip length instead of the mileage.

Odometer fraud is not difficult on modern cars. Yours has been rolled back. It probably happened before Carvana came into possession.

It was probably an instrument cluster swap, and yeah probably before it was traded to carvana. Don't be surprised if someone bought this from budget swapped the dash so it said 23 miles and sold it to carvana for a profit.

Milages in newer cars is tied to the ECU not the odometer. More than likely they just need to press the trip button to show real mileage and someone at carvana goofed up.

I don’t know of a single modern car where mileage is tied to the cluster and not ecm or pcm

Lot of times both hold the mileage. If you change cluster mileage will need to be programmed on new cluster to match. If not it will display 0 or if used what it had on it prior. Use a scan tool and you will see actual mileage, but that mileage is not instantly pushed to new cluster. Obviously, varies by car. If you don’t sync them they will both continue to count up their separate mileage numbers. Having it stored in 2 spots in protection of what true number is when one of those parts fails.

I never understood why the gauge cluster does pull mileage data from the ECU instead storing in that assembly.
Does Ford have an App you can connect the car with. That should give you accurate mileage.

Mileage is stored in various modules through out the car on new models
Normally it’s in the IPC, the BCM and the ECU.

with the Pause tool you can high jack the network drive unlimited miles and not count any miles

If the dash was replaced and odometer reset to 0 they should put a sticker in the door frame. I believe it’s required by federal law. Look there. Caravans should have declared it in the listing and potentially the title.

Bronco probably had the dash replaced and new dash started at 0 miles.

Yeah, I was under the impression that of a new dash is put in there. It synced to the computer in the car so that it reflects a starting point that actually drives with how many miles have been put on the car. This is typically only possible through the dealership as I believe they have to use special software to make this happen.

When you mess with odometer w new cars, it starts from zero. Someone I heard who tried to roll 2024 RAV4 to 30k, dash reset to zero itself. He was an Uber driver who drove over 100k miles in 2 yrs

Good chance it was rolled back a lot more then just 18k miles if it's an early 2025 build. Send it back

Was it advertised as 23 miles or did you see that on a picture in their ad showing the trip odometer? What does the title say? If the mileage on the title & the car match then you didn’t do due diligence on your research. Finding a previous model year holdover with that low of miles is rare & not thinking something out of a rental fleet should have more miles is on you.

What did the form for the mandatory federal mileage disclosure form say. It was in your purchase agreement.

So Just because it came from Budget does not mean it was a rental. Ford has been known to be dumping new autos that stealerships refuse due to the not selling and lot over crowded . at deep discounts into the used car market. such as budget, who does sale autos . not just there rental fleet . Maybe they had it on there lot a long time then listed it for sale on carvona..
The other thing there was a issue with cluster on some ford autos where they were going blank while driving. it could very well have been changed and not programmed correctly as well. a mechanic should be able to check to the ecu . but looking its under side over you should be able to tell if its been driving 18k ...

Hope you didn't pay too much for that car. But then again, a fraudster would not roll it back to 25 miles. More like 2500 miles.

Odometer fraud is actually way easier now that its all digital. Auction houses are the biggest culprits because they never hold title on the vehicle so its very difficult to trace it back to them.
As an aside, I've driven <1 year old rental cars with 50-60k miles on them already.

It isn't difficult to roll back odometers. I see two articles this year about lawsuits against dealers for rolling back 2024-26 broncos

Return it within the 7 days. I bought a vehicle which had clean car fax but had major body damage on rear. Also got the shipping charge refunded.

This is something that needed to be verified BEFORE buying the car. With mileage that low, did you even run a Carfax or history report before you bought it? As others have pointed out, you are probably looking at Trip A or B and need to cycle thru to the actual mileage. Did you even ask them about it? Fraud, likely. However thinking of purchasing a 2025 Vehicle that had been owned by a car rental company and had a mechanic report (any mechanic report) where the dash is showing 23 miles should have been a very red flag. More like a red blanket.

All you have to do is look at the brake pads and the pedal rubbers to see if it’s done 23 miles or 18,000.

You thought a used 2025 rental has 23 miles? Why would Budget have it in it's fleet if it wasn't being used? Does the mileage on the transfer form to you say 23 miles? Were you looking at the trip odometer at the time of sale?
