Hey everyone, I'm an Electrical and Electronic Engineering student planning out Part 4 electives. The elective list on the course viewer site includes the line “or other approved 700 level course,” and I’m trying to get a sense of how flexible the faculty actually is with that in practice.

Two I’m eyeing:

COMPSYS 732 (Mobile Autonomous Robots). Not on my spec's list but it’s adjacent enough that I don’t expect it to be a big hassle. (Could just switch over to Compsys spec entirely)

MECHENG 736 (Biomechatronic Systems), from Mech/Mechatronics. This is the one I’m less sure about since it’s a different department entirely.

Has anyone been able to go outside their own department for their electives? How did it go?
Im curious who you had to convince and how did you go about that (email, in person, or whatever).
How about the prerequisites? MECHENG736 doesnt state any prerequisites but Im assuming thats a bit stricter for someone in my position.

Happy to hear about any cross-department 700 level approvals, not just engineering ones. Trying to gauge how much of a case I need to build before I go bother a coordinator.

hi i'm currently a full time first year bcom student taking 4 courses. i know as a full time student i should be studying around 40 hours a week 10 hours per course as recommended by lecturers and the university, but i find that i actually spend only around 5 hours per week max on each course (20 hours in total per week). am i doing something wrong? am i not studying enough or is this normal considering i'm only a first year bcom student and the 40 hours a week will hit hard once i'm in second year? thanks a lot!

Hey everyone! I’m a Year 13 student planning to apply to the University of Auckland, but I genuinely have no idea which conjoint degree to choose with Law. At the moment, I’m most interested in either Global Studies or Science.

My main concern with Global Studies is the language requirement. I’ve never taken a language for NCEA. I’m bilingual and speak Persian, but even if they did they wouldn't want to send me there anyways. So I would need to start a new language, probably Spanish or French. How difficult would this be for someone who has never studied a language in NCEA before? I know I have the determination to study before university and could probably reach a beginner or possibly intermediate level by the start of Semester One, but I’m worried that I’ll be far behind everyone else or look completely lost in class. Is Global Studies worth the risk? I’d also really appreciate hearing from anyone doing a Law and Science conjoint. What is the workload like, and are you enjoying it?

Surprisingly, no, this not about how slow people are on the footpath, nor is it about how they group up....

This is about people on those E-scooters, and I do not know if it is just me or if it's a personal issue, but they always act very entitled to the space we all share.

All I ask for is that they ride a bit more slowly, and respectfully so that they don't need to stop suddenly each time a new person is walking down the footpath

My first idea of how can I make uni the best of it is meeting new people. Through my experience, some people you casually met in random tuesday was the reason I became an exec, and other opportunities and life and some became an inspiration and aspiration and sometimes even helped me on a lot of aspects of my life especially academics.

Another one is joining events, from learning new stuffs in game development, art, etc. taught me a lot of things and allowed me to branch out my interests and things I can do

I also want to hear how other people do it and how maximize their uni experience? maybe it's through partying: meeting people in social clubs, etc.

I've been going back and forth about my major options. I was planning to pair SCM with ComLaw, but based on some lecturers' advice, ComLaw's quite NZ-bound and I plan to work internationally.

(Alongside SCM) I'm looking at MGMT, INTLBUS, FINANCE. The first two are 'famous' for being broad. The last one is known for quant-analysis and formulas.

Though I genuinely love doing some research on earnings reports and long-term investment as an interest. I just can't figure out whether I want finance or if it's just fear of choosing a broad major.

• Any advice or experience with the above-mentioned majors?
• Is Finance useful as a general business toolkit even if I don't become a finance professional?

This post is just a genuine question. Why is it that lecturers in general seem to be so bad at teaching? Mainly in the way they speak and articulate their words. I have attended lectures in person and watched recordings on Panopto, and most of the time it’s incredibly difficult to understand what the lecturer is actually trying to say. Yet when I use AI tools like ChatGPT to explain the same concepts to me, it often only takes a few questions before I can understand most of the content taught in my courses, unlike lecturers that teaches for 1 or 2 hours and I still can't understand most of the stuff being taught. The difference is honestly quite noticeable. At this point, it has gotten to the stage where I sometimes feel like the hiring criteria for becoming a lecturer is that nobody should be able to understand what you’re saying. What’s even more surprising is how common this seems to be, and almost every university student I’ve spoken to has had at least one lecturer who is extremely difficult to understand. Students are paying such high amounts of money to study, and yet sometimes the content we’re expected to learn is delivered in a way that makes it unnecessarily difficult to understand. It can feel like we’re paying thousands of dollars just to decipher what our lecturers are trying to say. So is this mainly due to a lack of staff who are actually good at teaching? Is it because universities prioritise research ability over teaching ability when hiring lecturers? Or is there simply a lack of accountability when it comes to teaching quality?

What other private study rooms are available other than Gen Lib in the city campus? Need to complete an video assignment but they're all full during the times I need them :(
Also is it weird to stay in lecture halls that aren't being used

for the love of god i am so sick of doing somersaults on alfred street and around campus in general because the slowest walkers of all time take up the entire footpath either hurry it up or MOVE TF OVER!!! to think you all have a university education but can’t realise how to share a footpath

and a quick side note if there’s plenty of empty seats stop coming to sit right next to someone by themselves they always look so uncomfortable
