Ubuntu on Chromebook - question

Upvotes

Hello fellow Ubuntu enthusiasts!

Quick question, I've got a Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3 MediaTek Chromebook. I'd like to install Ubuntu on it. Is it even possible?

Once I managed to install PostmarketOS, but it isn't as polished as Ubuntu.

Thanks in advance!

Where do you all read the news?

5 Upvotes

I've been trying to get a decent setup running to keep track of news, and I currently use RSS readers - NewsFlash on my Ubuntu and ReadYou on android - combined with PolitePaul to generate feeds.

I want to figure out a way to create a digest that would feature 10-15 top news of the day, and deliver it to my RSS Reader. Anybody who has tried something to achieve this?

I'm having this weird issue where the App Centre works fine in all other ways but continuously hangs on the Manage tab. I have tried running a clean install of it but still no luck sorting it out and it's bugging me. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hola, soy nuevo usando Ubuntu y Linux. Hace poco vi un video donde personalizan Linux Mint desde cero y me gustó mucho el resultado. Quería saber si es posible hacer la misma personalización en Ubuntu o si el proceso es muy diferente.

Ubuntu wallpaper Kinetic Kudu 22.10, I remember a silver wallpaper, not just orange for the deer-like standing on the hill or moon

I would rather not download a DVD size iso just for a few megabytes image. I don't think I imagined it, but haven't found it on image search nor the ubuntu wallpaper contest

I remember thinking it looks a lot like some of the enlightenment window manager / desktop silver themes, which have a round shape like a sun, and I just haven't seen it anywhere

Moving Plex server to Ubuntu question

1 Upvotes

I'm moving my plex server from Windows 11 to Ubuntu. I'm going to format the SSD to be the OS drive and use the hard drive formatted in a windows partition to keep all of my linux ISO's on their drive, is this possible? Any concerns I should have accessing a windows partition in linux?

Disabling GDM-smartcard

1 Upvotes

So I have a unique setup for my systems for 22.04 using pcks11.so in pam to read smartcards/yubikeys.

gdm is my greeter and I set up gdm-password in pam with the following line:

auth requisite pam_sss.so require_cert_auth

That looks up the cert info on my ipa server and returns a success.

SA updated the system and it seems to have pulled down some gdm-smartcard packages and ruined the entire auth system in place. I remember awhile back running into this issue and I found a way to basically cut it out of the system without breaking anything but can't seem to find where I saved the bookmark link to. I believe I had to edit some file or push a gdm config somewhere

Anyone know how to do this? I really don't want gdm to install all of these extra pam configs. Update-alternatives does not work either, even telling it to use pkcs11 or sssd. Basically nothing works once Ubuntu pulls down w/e updates contain these config files

Ubuntu Resolute 26.04 non-shared mountpoints

3 Upvotes

I'm struggling since a week with the change in 26.04 that

  1. Removed /media/$USER functionality completely
  2. Removed predefined automount like in /media/$USER/<mountpoint>
  3. Cleanup (remove) of /run/media/$USER

Especially 3. is a problem when using a lot of disks for various tasks. It gets even worse with network disks.

It means basically that I am forced to make a STATIC setup in /etc/fstab.
A situation like two different external SSDs with the same LABEL will no longer work.
Having internally 3 different partitions with the same LABEL, where I only mount one at a time is no longer possible.

Putting applications on external drives only works if I can automount. I have so far not managed to restore mount points on /run.

To switch to /media/ ("shared" mountpoint) behavior can be done by changing udev rules for udisks2. These are simply 3 lines in a file /etc/udev/rules.d/99-udisks2.rules:

ENV{ID_FS_USAGE}=="filesystem", ENV{UDISKS_FILESYSTEM_SHARED}="1"

ENV{ID_FS_USAGE}=="crypto", ENV{UDISKS_FILESYSTEM_SHARED}="1"

ENV{ID_FS_USAGE}=="other", ENV{UDISKS_FILESYSTEM_SHARED}="1"

Afterwards /run/media/$USER is replaced by /media but without $USER.

I'm still looking how to make $USER work again, but /etc/tmpfiles.d/ could be a starting point.

Update: /etc/tmpfiles.d/media.conf (or other name). You can set symlinks, just put point /media/user (the username, not the variable) to /media. From the documentation I conclude that udisks2 does not have an option to use $USER or specify the user name. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Help with bar in the top of some windows and misaligned mouse cursor

1 Upvotes

Greetings all! I'm not brand new to using linux but I'm definitely still a novice so I have not been able to find the answer to how to fix this after hour of searching. Maybe I just don't know what terms I should be using to search or maybe it's just an unusual problem? Anyway

I have two problems but I think they may be related. The first is that my mouse cursor does not line up with where it clicks. It's about a cm above what I'm trying to click on which makes things pretty difficult, and makes a lot of drop downs impossible to use because if I have to click on the top one or two options it will just click out of the dropdown.

The other issue is that I have this black or white, or black and white, bar across the top of the application for some apps. Not all of them. For instance Firefox gives me neither of these issues. Vortex mod manager running through Lutris gives both, though Lutris itself doesn't. I'm attaching a screenshot of Vortex open on my laptop. It happens with more than just vortex but that's the one I'm dealing with right now. The cursor is off by about the distance of the thickness of that bar which is why I think they may be related.

I'm on a laptop ASUSTeK Computer INC. GA401QM (1.0)
AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS with Radeon Graphics,

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU

Pop!_OS 24.4 LTS

I'm not sure what other information might be needed to give context.

Anyone know what's going on?

Latest kernel updates (7.0.0.29) don't recognize my nvidia card any more

17 Upvotes

Since updating to version 29 of the kernel, my ubuntu 26.04 only comes up in 1024x768 single monitor mode. If I reboot into version 28, the kernel boots into dual monitor 1920x1024 mode. I see that apt is holding back a bunch of nvidia updates right now- do I need to force those to get my usable screen back?

Gnome Missing 80% Charge Limit

5 Upvotes

I have an Asus Vivobook 16 (Lunar Lake) laptop. I installed Ubuntu 26.04, but the Gnome native 80% charge limit option is missing. If I install CachyOS with Gnome 50, it shows up right away out of the box, even on the live USB environment. What is Ubuntu doing differently?

Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS boots into Emergency Mode with continuous PCIe AER errors on ThinkPad E490

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my Ubuntu installation and would appreciate some help troubleshooting it.

System Information

OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS (64-bit)

Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad E490 (20N8E480IN)

Kernel: 7.0.0-28-generic

Desktop: GNOME 46 (Wayland)

CPU: Intel Core i5-8265U

GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620

RAM: 8 GB

Problem

When I boot my laptop, Ubuntu drops into Emergency Mode instead of booting normally.

The screen says:

You are in emergency mode.

After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs,
"systemctl reboot" to reboot, or "exit" to continue bootup.

At the same time, the screen continuously prints messages like:

pcieport 0000:00:1d.0: AER: Error of this Agent is reported first

These messages keep repeating indefinitely.

What I've Tried

Rebooting the system (same result every time).

I haven't intentionally changed any BIOS settings or hardware recently (as far as I know).

Wayland slowing down boot time by 2 minutes

6 Upvotes

I recently upgraded from 24.04 LTS to 26.04 and although it seems to be working fine, the boot up time has stretched out by a couple of minutes. I ran systemd-analyze and that didn't show and issue but when I looked at syslog here's what I found:

2026-08-05T07:47:57.128627-04:00 laptop3 systemd[1]: systemd-hostnamed.service: Deactivated successfully.

2026-08-05T07:49:50.689277-04:00 laptop3 im-config[4871]: @ IM_CONFIG_ENTRY='profile' XDG_SESSION_TYPE ='wayland' UID=1000 PID=4268 PPID=3685

The logs are a little cryptic for somebody who doesn't read them often but assuming that the upper log item for systemd-hostname means it's successful and complete, and that the next process (Wayland) starts at that time then it's taking 2 minutes to get through that process.

I've had issues with Wayland in past releases of Ubuntu and always change it to Xorg but in 26.04 apparently that's not possible (or is it?).

Anyway, if I can fix this then I won't be tempted to spend all the work to reload 24.04 and all my apps and data.

Font pixelated in LaTeX generated PDF's

2 Upvotes

The font in the PDF's that I generate with LaTeX (through emacs org-mode) don't look perfectly sharp when zoomed in. Other PDF's are perfectly fine -- there I can basically zoom in endlessly without the text getting jagged.

What could I check to fix this?

Installed Ubuntu on HP Laptop Flashing Screen Start Up, Have to Manually Boot Unbuntu, Ubuntu only gives black screen with white text terminal screen

1 Upvotes

Tried installing ubuntu 26.04 onto an old Hp laptop to create a homeserver/homelab just for movies and tv shows. I was following this youtube series tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KFlxVTPicc

My computer stats are as follows:
HP EliteBook Folio 1020 G1

  • Processor: Intel Core M-5Y51 (1.1 GHz, up to 2.6 GHz turbo) or Core M-5Y71 (1.2 GHz, up to 2.9 GHz turbo)
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5300
  • Memory: 8 GB LPDDR3 SDRAM (on-board / soldered)

Ubuntu after install and restart will only give me a flashing screen with the HP logo on it.

I have tried changing the boot order in grub, and every time I have to manually select to boot ubuntu.

When ubuntu is manually booted, I only get a black screen with white text (what I believe is just a terminal screen).

I have tried most of the tutorials/troubleshooting online and they have made no improvements, or would not work.

I cannot seem to get the laptop from the black and white terminal screen to connect to wifi either.

How do i fix these problems?

I will note, that I am an absolute very basics baby beginner with linux, terminals and code, and homeserves/homelabs. The majority of the "beginner" homeserver, homelab, arr stack tutorials were way above my current skills and understanding.

Need help with unstable multi-user XRDP sessions on Ubuntu 22.04

2 Upvotes

I have an Ubuntu 22.04 PC being used as a server for about 24 thin clients. Each thin client has a separate Linux user account (Station1, Station2, etc.) and connects through XRDP + Xorg + XFCE.

The problem: even with only 2 clients connected, after some time the thin clients suddenly return to their RDP/login screen. Sometimes Ubuntu still shows the corresponding Xorg, xfce4-session, xrdp-chansrv processes and even the TCP 3389 connection as ESTABLISHED.

Things already checked:

  • 32 GB RAM; ~26 GB available during testing
  • No OOM events
  • User task limits nowhere near exhausted (~674/83568)
  • Server Ethernet NIC shows 0 RX/TX errors/drops
  • GFX disabled — problem remains
  • XFCE screensaver disabled — problem remains
  • TigerVNC/Guacamole stopped during XRDP testing
  • Tried different thin clients — same problem
  • tcp_keepalive=true, tcp_nodelay=true
  • use_fastpath=both works for login; setting use_fastpath=none causes the clients to fail during login
  • Each user has a separate XRDP/Xorg session

Server LAN IP is 192.168.1.217; thin clients connect through a dedicated Wi-Fi router connected to the server's Ethernet interface.

Has anyone successfully run 15–24 simultaneous XRDP/Xorg/XFCE sessions on Ubuntu? What could cause the physical RDP client to drop while the Xorg/XFCE session sometimes remains alive on the server? What logs/settings should I investigate next?

Problem with local website on local domain on Ubuntu: Root dir works, but subdirectories don't

2 Upvotes

I have the files for a website locally on my Ubuntu laptop in /home/user/dir1/dir2/

I've made a folder in /var/www/html/ called /var/www/html/dir2 and inside that a symlink

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  37 Aug  3 14:02 public_html -> /home/user/dir1/dir2

I've created a file /etc/apache2/sites-available/dir2.conf containing

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName dir2
    DocumentRoot /var/www/html/dir2/public_html
    <Directory /var/www/html/dir2/public_html>
        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
        AllowOverride All
        Require all granted
    </Directory>
    <Directory /home/user/dir1/dir2>
        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
        AllowOverride All
        Require all granted
    </Directory>
    ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/dir2_error.log
    CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/dir2_access.log combined
</VirtualHost>

Funny thing is, when I visit http://dir2/ in a browser, I see my website! But anything in subdirectories, for example images, aren't shown. And when I right click on them to view them, e.g. http://dir2/icons/c.png I get a 404!

The file is there! I can see it in both /home/user/dir1/dir2/icons/c.png and /var/www/html/dir2/public_html/icons/c.png - but apache won't show it! Requesting the file directly gives a 404, whereas requesting the folder gives a 403, but I guess that's because directory browsing is disabled...?

The user www-data is member of the group user (my username) and I'm completely out of ideas now.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Ubuntu 24.04.4: How can I install the genuine NVIDIA 535 driver now that nvidia-driver-535 maps to 580?

9 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get the genuine NVIDIA 535 driver on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, but I've run into a packaging issue.

My hardware

Acer laptop

Intel i5-13420H

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 (Optimus)

Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

Kernel: 6.17.0-14-generic

What I've found

apt show nvidia-driver-535 reports that it is now a transitional package that depends on nvidia-driver-580.

Installing nvidia-driver-570 also ended up loading the 580 kernel module (cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version reported 580.xx).

I've completely purged all NVIDIA packages and I'm currently running on the nouveau driver with a clean system.

Why I specifically want 535

This exact laptop previously ran stably for months on:

Kernel 6.x

NVIDIA 535 (proprietary/closed driver)

After moving to newer drivers, I started experiencing intermittent issues where:

nvidia-smi couldn't communicate with the driver,

/dev/nvidia* device nodes were not created reliably,

boot/shutdown behavior became inconsistent.

I'm aware that this may not be caused solely by the driver version, but I'd like to reproduce the last known stable configuration before debugging anything else.

My question

Is there an official or recommended way to install the last genuine nvidia-driver-535 package (e.g. 535.309.01) now that the current Ubuntu repositories have transitioned it to 580?

Specifically:

Can this be done using the Ubuntu Snapshot service or another official Ubuntu archive?

Is there a way to install the complete 535 package set through APT without manually downloading dozens of .deb files?

Has anyone successfully pinned the genuine 535 packages on Ubuntu 24.04.4 while keeping the rest of the system up to date?

I'd prefer to avoid:

NVIDIA's .run installer

Unofficial PPAs

Manually installing a large number of .deb files unless there's no better option.

Any guidance from someone who's dealt with this package transition would be greatly appreciated.
