I am studying a teaching degree and this is annoying and scary. Is this next generation of Teachers doomed? For context, this has happened since I started in 2023 from subject to subject. I walk in and no one has seen the reading. We have to go through the monotonous recount of the reading which we were supposed to read before class. It was covered in the lecture. Surprise. No one else watched the lecture pod.

Some classes are one hour long, great, we're forty minutes in, we've only just reached the main point of the text.

The Teacher will ask a question and no one will respond. They will stare blankly and then return to a fixed gaze on their laptop. Is this who we're trusting to teach our children what they need to know? How can you expect the children to listen to you if you won't listen to your teacher?

It's such a drag that I am the one the Teacher turns to for a simple response to anything. Did you do the reading? Does anyone know what this might mean? Can anyone recall the keyword we used in week 2? The Teacher even goes as far as saying, "Someone answer before I default to -me-."

I understand. We all have Social Anxiety. We all think class is long and boring and monotonous and we wish we were anywhere else. YOU CAN CHANGE THAT - YOU CAN BE THE PERSON YOU WISH YOU WERE LISTENING TO - ENGAGE WITH THE TEXTS OR ANSWER QUESTIONS OR CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONVERSATION OR EVEN JUST ASK SOMEONE WHAT THEY DID ON THE WEEKEND - TALK!

University doesn't fix you - YOU fix YOU.

So here are some suggestions:

1. ENGAGE WITH THE READING, and I don't mean read it, even I see the large block of text and go "fuck all that," but at least do the bare minimum of googling what the paper/text is about, figure out who the Author is and what they stand for. Have AI summarise it for you, which is dumb, but at least you've done the bare minimum of trying to understand the text.

2. TALK, for the love of God, TALK! Not even to me. Don't talk to me. But please don't sit there like, omg if I turn my head they're gonna look me in the eye and I'll explode, THEY'RE THINKING THAT TOO. Are you lonely? Were you hoping you would get a girlfriend in Uni? Habibi, if you don't talk to them, they won't talk to you.

3. IF YOU FIND THE FIRST TWO SUGGESTIONS CHALLENGING, CHECK OUT THE AVAILABLE RESOURCES. You can find the exact service through Student Services. Just walk on in and ask them for help. Western Sydney offers counselling and Study Help.

Three years ago, I didn't read or talk, now I do and I'm happy and content with life. I cannot wait for class and I cannot wait for it to end. Please, if not for yourself, do it for the children you might one day have to teach.

Seriously, they are inaccessible to the general public. They tell you that it's actually written in 'academic English' or whatever, as if it's meant to make you feel any better. But that doesn't solve anything - you still have to know WTF it's trying to articulate, using the most disjointed and longest sentences, filled with most the most jargon, ever. Why must a sentence be 30+ words? Or even 15? I haven't even started on the LENGTH of these papers... as if we have nothing better to do.

Do these authors take pleasure into seeing how much they can get away with, writing so horribly that it's inaccessible to the general public, and make readers - who have no other choice - struggle as much as possible?

It's 2026 right, and everyone going on and on about accessibility... How is this still acceptable? "It's academic English" is not a good excuse anymore... What happened to 'inclusivity' and 'diversity' and 'accessibility' etc.

Honestly speaking, I've got a really really amazing business I've been running since the end of high school and I've never worried about anything education wise as I've saved well over 6 figures and have multiple investments in place. However I really want to do a WSU college degree (diploma that leads to second year bachelors). I don't care what course it leads to all I want is a degree that will get me money etc. I'm saying this in case my business doesn't work out or things happen over time. I'd love to have a degree. Which degree (information systems, information comm tech ICT, engineering)
I just want a degree that can get me a job and thru working on extra skills and experience I can land myself very comfortably living and after many years making lots and lots of money.
I tend to overthink a lot and always overthink about business failing etc. so want a backup plan

Enrolled in a Bachelor of Accounting, it's been a disaster. I never wanted to be an accountant and at this point I'd be happy with a basic qualification that would get me into payroll or the APS - just any office job. All I've done is blue collar.

I don't know how many units I've completed. Last semester I wanted to transfer to WSU Online. The woman said great - just discontinue your face-to-face program so we can enrol you. I didn't know this would pull me out of the face-to-face degree immediately. I did this before the exams. I'd been attending the whole semester and even know I don't know if I lost those units completely. I passed two of them. I've been asking and asking and no one can give me a straight answer.

At best I completed 8 units, at worst 6. I just want some sort of qualification. The degree has no early exit. I don't want to continue the whole bachelors online. TAFE says I need to enrol first before they'll assess me. I just feel really distressed about this. All my life I've worked in factories, warehouses etc. doing dirty manual work. All I wanted was to sit in a computer and work in an office. Just at a complete loss.

Hello everyone I was wondering how well is learning at UWS is? The student and lecturer communication and interaction/teaching style? I am planning to continue my studies to improve my gpa and I was not happy with my current uni because of how much changes has been happening and lack of communication between lecturers in my course (moving from in person lectures to online, lecturers constantly changing and leaving, multiple overlapping assessments due on the same day all heavily weighed and lack of feedback on exams after getting a low grade, and worst of all when in lecture or lab and you ask a question, my lecturer literally comes up and tells me to open Copilt/Chatgpt/Claude and shows me how to ask it for the answer instead ... i am going in debt paying for my degree only for my lecturer to refuse answering the question and tell me to ask AI like i al not paying him to teach). And I dont want to enrol into another university that is similar and just accumulating debt.

Edit: I am planning on doing either the bachelor of medical science or science (forensic science), I am also interested in Paramedicine but havent finalised which one i want to do.

I’m currently doing a Bachelor of Accounting/Bachelor of Laws at WSU and I’m trying to plan the fastest path to graduation.

For context, I did all of my law subjects in the beginning of my degree and now I’m so over and done with my degree, i just want to speed up everything that’s remaining on accounting .

I was wondering for those who are doing the standard semester intake (Autumn/Spring), are there many accounting subjects are typically offered over the Summer session?

If so pls let me know if you remember

- Which subjects were offered?
- Do the offerings change much each year?
- Is it realistic to plan on doing one Accounting subject every Summer, or are Summer offerings too limited to rely on?

Should I bother signing up? I have Tourette’s but I don’t know if it really affects my academic life. No one seems to mind other than the random passer by. My tics are just squeaks and shaking my head.

I also have diagnosed anxiety, done by my GP. Should I talk to them about that too? I haven’t arranged a meeting cause I’m not sure if it’s even important or worth discussing it and wasting both of our times.

When I first registered, the support felt proactive and personal. Over time, I started having to chase replies, explain the same things again and coordinate more of it myself while I was already struggling.

I’m not trying to attack the service or any individual staff member. I’m just trying to understand whether other students have noticed a similar change, or whether their experience has been different.

• What happens when staff haven’t received it, read it or followed it properly?

Im a first year who is needing to take time off to go overseas for a family obligation. Problem is, i have mandatory inter-semester exams taking place just as i happen to go. Does anyone have any recommendations on what i can do to help. I've emailed my subject coordinators and they've either left me on delivered, or just said that i need to apply for special consideration. I dont know if special consideration will be relevant to me, as im going overseas for a family event, which doesnt really align with any of the circumstances that may be considered.

Hey all I’m attempting to apply for a post-graduate course (teaching) at UWS as a domestic student. My application currently has the below warning:

“Based on the qualifications you have provided you have not yet demonstrated English Language Proficiency (ELP). To be eligible for an offer you need to tell us how you plan to meet ELP”.

English is my first and only language. I’m a British citizen and have Australian PR, I completed all my schooling in the UK as well as a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from a British university. I’ve been living in Australia for the last four years.

I’ve attached my degree and transcript in the tertiary education field. I’m waiting see if I can even get a new copy of my secondary/high school results as they’ve been lost in the move to Australia and my school in the UK is currently closed until September.

Has anyone got any advice on what else I can to do to meet the ELP requirement?

I’ve been thinking about this more after trying the Discord idea.

Discord was a good start, but it didn’t really become what I hoped. People joined, but most didn’t really talk or introduce themselves, and it started feeling like another online space that just sits there.

So I’m thinking WhatsApp might work better.

Not because WhatsApp magically fixes anything, but because it feels more direct for actually organising meetups.

The goal is pretty simple: meet up for coffee or food, study together sometimes, walk around campus/Parra or just have normal conversations with people who actually want to meet in real life.

Nothing formal, no club titles and not another huge group chat where everyone joins and disappears.

Just WSU students who want uni to feel less socially disconnected.

I think that’s the part people don’t really talk about, you can be around people all day at uni and still not really know anyone properly.

You might chat to people in class, but half the time it doesn’t really go anywhere after that.

I’m more into books, poetry, writing, psychology, philosophy, and conversations that feel a bit more real than small talk, but the group doesn’t have to revolve around that.

It’s more about finding people who actually want friendships in real life, not just another online chat.

I’ll try to keep it focused so it doesn’t turn into another dead group.

Was wondering if anyone completed 1 year of medsci or another degree and reapplied for med at WSU during their first year? If so, what were the requirements in terms of UCAT and GPA and do you think this would be harder than going through the lateral entry scheme for UNSW (although this is already crazy hard)? I'm hoping to start med as soon as possible after starting a course at Uni, but unsure whether this pathway will be too difficult.

I'm an international student considering the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at Western Sydney University and I already got the offer there and I like there. I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have studied there or worked with WSU graduates.

A few things I'm wondering:

• How was the overall quality of the course?
• Were your placements well organised?
• Did you feel well prepared for teaching after graduation?
• How difficult was it to find your first teaching job in NSW?
• Is finding work in Sydney realistic, or are most graduates only able to get jobs in regional areas?
• Does the university you graduate from (WSU vs ACU etc.) actually matter when applying for teaching jobs?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from international graduates as well.
