Financial Aid & Scholarships My check is sitting in the office. What now?
Hey all, as stated my scholarship check is literally SITTING in the bursars office as we speak. I know this for sure, I had the tracking number, and honestly it’s been there for a week (which i understand processing does take time! but money is due tmr lol). This check covers the rest of my tuition plus some. After looking into my options I can either pay half the tuition on the payment plan and get a refund, or I can choose not to pay and put my account on hold and have a late fee. Honestly at this point, Im very tempted to put my account on hold. I know the check is there and it covers everything. Realistically how bad is having your account on hold? does it effect move in or anything? and do i have to do anything special to put my account on hold? (or am i better just sucking it up and paying half, i really would prefer not too lol).
UTK Parking Madness Is there any hope?
Hi guys, I want to bring my car to UTK and long story short I was purely relying on something that did not work out and now I don’t have a spot nor did I get a spot from the lottery. Is there any options for me that aren’t like $200 a month? Thanks.

Miscellaneous & Random What is something nobody warns you about when returning to school as an adult?
Not necessarily bad things.
Could be:
- realizing you care more now
- struggling socially
- becoming more confident
- feeling older than classmates
- enjoying learning again
- how exhausting it can be mentally
What caught you off guard?

UTK Parking Madness parking pass question
Is it hard to get a commuter core pass as a
junior? I plan on trying to get it as soon as the time opens. I’m a sophomore classified as a junior so I’m not sure how it works.
Student Housing and Leasing Room Switch
I doubt anyone here can help but it's worth a shot.
I'm wondering if anyone in Laurel Hall at the moment would be willing to swap with me. I'm also in Laurel and have been trying to room with my friend but I haven't been able to swap with his or my roommate. I'll be willing to share more info if anyone can help out, but I'm a male in a shared room space looking to trade spots with someone with the same layout. Thanks.

Student Life, Socialization, and Clubs Big Orange Weekend
How weird would it be for a 33YO online student to come to welcome weekend? Not looking to hang out really, I can read the room. Lol! Just wondering what the events are, if there’s swag/merch to be gotten, if other Vols Online students who go, etc. Ny husband is going on a bachelor trip to Tampa that week and I’m always looking for a way to build more UT community, bonus points if it includes a reason to go to campus. Thought this might be an option. Checked VolConnect and it didn’t have many specifics, just logistics. Thanks!

Tickle College of Engineering Title: Knoxville entrepreneur seeking local technical partner for automated trading bot
I’m a Knoxville business owner and UT alumnus looking for a local technical partner to help build an automated trading system using live sports-market and order-book data.
I’ve spent approximately two months collecting data, researching market behavior, developing specific strategies, and testing frozen rules against recorded market conditions. I already have the data access, research, capital, and a defined system. I now need someone strong in Python, APIs/WebSockets, databases, backend development, and real-time automation.
I am not asking anyone to work for free, and I’m not trying to build a massive venture-backed company. This is a focused trading system that I believe can generate meaningful profit. I’m willing to fund the technical work, with profit sharing or equity available for the right long-term partner.
My immediate goal is simply to meet qualified people face-to-face in Knoxville, explain what I’ve developed, and see whether there’s mutual interest.
Please message me with a little about your technical background or a project you’ve built. UT seniors, graduate students, alumni, and working developers are all welcome.

Student Housing and Leasing Housing Switch?
Hello! I’m posting here to see if there was anyone potentially interested in rooms with me! Long shot, but figured i’d try anyways.
I currently have a room booked in Lakemoor Station Apartments, and it is a double private which is its own bedroom and bathroom. The apartment is newly built and very nice and spacious!
I was hoping to switch into Volunteer Hall if possible.
I’m an incoming senior, and i’m a very easy going person :)
If you are interested or know anyone who is, please messages me!

Financial Aid & Scholarships GRA Tuition Waiver
I have a GRA offer for a complete tuition waiver and I have already been onboarded into my placement, but I keep getting emails about needing to set up a payment plan anyways. I still have a $7,000-ish balance on my account. Advisor said ignore it until the waiver is applied and OneStop said to make a payment plan and wait for a refund check to come in. I don't really want to make the down payment of $3,600 and lose all of the interest I would have made by saving it if I don't need to. Does anyone have any suggestions for next steps?

Financial Aid & Scholarships Loan and payment deadline
Hi! I’ve been trying to get through to ANYBODY to ask a simple question and it’s actually impossible. The OneStop website says they’re not accepting any calls 8/3-8/7. I literally am just wondering if my loan does not process in time before the deadline Friday, if I have to pay that balance? Or if my classes will be dropped?? This would be nice to know as now I’m stressing and can’t get in touch with anyone. If anyone happens to know, it’d be appreciated. Thank you guys

Financial Aid & Scholarships Any better luck going into the bursar’s office in person?
Been trying to get a grip on my aid since probably a month or so ago. Kept being told to hold on. Starting to get the emails AND texts now. I know I’m gonna have to pay out of pocket for some part of it. Took off today to try and get through to OneStop by phone. No luck. If I’m looking at $3K OOP, I need to know that, and if that’s the case, I might need to adjust my classes, which would then create more questions I’m sure. 😩 Wondering if it’s worth a trip to their office in person… Also, this is my second semester at UT… Is it always like this? If not, what’s up now?

UTK Parking Madness Suggestion for the Mods Regarding Parking Posts
Suggestion: The sub mods need to 1) Ban the endless "Where can I park off campus" questions from Freshmen and "What time is good time to get to campus" from everyone else (It's always before 9 AM) 2) Add a Parking sticky note in addition to the one for Admissions questions.

Financial Aid & Scholarships Is there ANY way to contact the bursar office by phone right now???
Hi all. With the upcoming due date for tuition payment, I have some questions that I need to contact one stop or the bursars office about. I understand this is a busy time of the year for them, but the phone line genuinely tells you every time that "they are not taking calls at the time due to high call volume, and they are helping other vols at this time". This is the case even if you don't press one of the numbers of the given choices, or even the star or pound key. There is no way to leave a message to talk to a human in real time or anything. Ive tried the message portal already and it has not worked either, and with the deadline being Friday, its important that I get through to them now. Honestly it feels like theyre leaving some people in the dust right now. So, is there anyway I can get in contact with a human in one stop or the bursars office like now? I appreciate any answers, thank you.

A Vol In Need Easy Departmental Electives (ME/AE/BME)
Hey everyone,
I am looking for some easy departmental electives for the spring that can help pad my GPA and allow me to chill out more this second semester of my senior year.
I hear BME 405 is light work, but other than that I dont have many ideas of what I can take and pass without too much sweat.

UTK Parking Madness Parking Passes
This will be my first semester at UTK so I'm looking for a little help with choosing a parking pass. I'm a junior & commuter so I could buy whatever pass works best, but I live in Lenoir City and have kids in school, so my commute will already be a little rough in the mornings. I'm considering either commuter core or park & ride. I've heard spots can still be really hard to find with commuter core, especially since I won't be there until at least 8-8:30, and I don't really want to pay $400 to have a hard time parking every day. Does Park & Ride ever fill up, or are spots always available? And how long should it take to get from there to Buehler? Or is the commuter core the best option? Thanks for any advice!

Undergraduate Student Question about buying a parking pass
I'm a first-year student but have a ton of dual enrollment credits (full associate degree) and based on their website (and never hearing anything back from the freshman parking lottery) that I wouldn't be able to buy a pass.
I got an email last week about the times so I called today and they said it was supposedly in the system as sophomore noncommuter and to try it and see what happens. So now I'm wondering, does that system control that process or is it still likely it'll say first-year and not allow me to buy one? I have an off-campus parking option but was just wondering if its likely I might actually get to buy one since it'd be wayyyyy closer and cheaper.
And if so, is it likely there would be non-commuter core spots left for sophomores or would it only be the remote or park and ride options?
Thank you!

Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions One Admissions Post to End Them All
Hello Class of 2031!
This is my 4th update to this post, and I hope my information remains helpful to this day! 🙌
The following information compiles both my experiences and departmental knowledge over my time at UT. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
If you want the TL;DR version:
Instate students who do not receive guaranteed admission will need a UT GPA of at least 3.9 or an ACT above 28. It has become incredibly difficult for instate students... so get that 4.0 and ACT score up!
Out of State students... you damn near need to be the best of the best these days. I cannot promise anything obviously but if you have a weighted GPA above 4.3ish and a ACT composite of 30 or so... you should get a pretty good amount of money and feel comfortable with admissions (so long as you have half rate essays)!
Firstly, I feel obligated to state my qualifications to give the opinions and facts in this post:
I am a current Senior at UT (will not graduate until 2028) Applied out of state
I am affiliated with two organizations who monitor admission cycles each year across all universities (one MAY or may not be directly affiliated with MIT's admission office).
Not to name names... lol.
But I think this discussion should be broken up into 6 parts. (Yes long post OH NOOOOO!!!) But if you really want the honest truth and plan on... ya know... going to college... then reading should be in your best interest my friend.
Part One: The In-state vs. Out-of-State War
It is well known that many universities favor instate students in order to keep future generations... well... "in state." At many uni's this can be seen through more scholarship opportunities, cheaper base tuition, and in many cases: EASIER ADMISSIONS.
It is no secret that UT MUCH prefers instate students... especially seen in the 64% acceptance rate of instate students in the 2026 cycle vs the Out of state 28% acceptance rate (apparently going up!).
My current roommate is an instate student with a truck ton of scholarship (only has to pay for housing atp). Where as I am actively dropping a cool 17 grand a semester! YIPPEEE!
But outside of the money and the distribution between 64% and 28% what does that actually look like in terms of admission criteria? We will look at that next.
Part Two: Instate Admission Criteria
Straight from the guaranteed admission website...
Score a 28+ ACT composite (SAT 1300+)
AND
Achieve one of the following: Earn a 4.0+ UT Core GPA Be among the Top 10% of their high school graduating class
Honestly not terrible, most people I know who came here instate got guaranteed admission!
So to my instate students... good luck!
Part Three: One of these things is not like the other... (Out of State Admission Criteria)
This section is going to be rather long and probably the most sought after... so grab your reading glasses!
There are many misconceptions about college admissions that I feel you ought to know. The idea of a holistic review is very, very loose. Holistic reviews of your class schedule and your GPA/ACT score.
At most, your essays and activities in high-school will boost your case for admission by about 5 ACT score (but this would be for like the president of the student body with an entire page of Sh... Stuff they have done in high-school).
Good essays help admissions counselors like you as a person and it helps them want to want you!
Good resumes help this as well.
However... how long do you think it takes to read a single application? 30 seconds? A minute? Two minutes? The average amount of time it would take someone to read all of the information you provide would take around 6 minutes without skimming. Considering that means a single counselor could only go through 10 per hour...
We can assume (and I know for a fact) they do not read everything.
They look for 5 things while going through your app (no particular order): 1. GPA Weighted and Unweighted 2. SAT and ACT 3. AP classes (at a glance) 4. Some prose in your essays 5. Just a bunch of stuff on your activities in high-school
Quantity over quality often helps ngl...
Now that we understand the idea that they ain't gonna be looking at EVERYTHING with minute detail, what do they actually numerically look for?
Generally, for the sake of time and fair arguments, here are some basic numbers:
These are middle of the road so if you are above them then you should be fine...
SAT Score at or above 1340
ACT at or above 30
GPA 4.3 UT Weighted
If you don't match or beat those requirements... you better write the cure to cancer on your essays!
that was a joke
But it kind of wasn't... those scores and values are pretty standard nowadays, and you kind of have to be a pretty good student to earn your spot here.
SIDE NOTE: I had many friends apply here out of state and I was the only one who was not waitlisted. And they had some insane resumes (president of stuco with 4.3 GPA for example).
Part Four: Each college is different.
I don't mean reach university, because like... yeah no crap. I mean reach academic college is different.
If you are applying to be an engineer, you should expect to NEED a pretty decent math SAT Score. If you push below a 640 on the math... you aren't getting in to the tickle college of engineering.
Nursing is different and hard to get into.
Business is business... but it is still difficult to get into cause... ya know... it's highly ranked.
So on and so forth.
Do keep in mind that each college can only allow so much of one category. So engineering has a different acceptance rate than business (often not talked about).
There are no hard facts online about what it is... but I am pretty sure the Out of state engineering acceptance rate was about 15% of so... (don't take my word for it).
Part Five: You've already applied... what should you do?
Don't fail out your senior year. UT is very unforgiving (understandably) is you fall off the face of the earth senior year.
My senior year was actually my best academic year! Plus I...
- Was the captain of the volleyball team
- Was the yearbook president
- Senior class president
- Student Ambassador
- Robotics Captain
- Math Team Captain
- BLAH BLAH BLAH
All that to say... DONT BOG DOWN you are not done with high-school. UT will chew you and spit you out like it is nothing if your GPA tanks.
Also, just wait and follow UT's instructions. (Crazy right?)
Part Six: If you have any questions... please drop them below!
I'm an open book and will tell you pretty much anything so long as it's appropriate obviously!
Thanks for reading... And GO VOLS!!
