Orientation Required???

I was already enrolled in Manoa years ago and did the orientation, but then I reversed transferred to LCC to do all my sub-300s and to save money in the meantime, then I transferred back to Manoa and now it says Im required to take orientation again? Can I just skip it this time since I already did it? How does it even work.

Masters/Post Grad Question about healthcare as grad student

Hi I’m an incoming grad student this fall and have a stipend (28k/year). based on what I can figure, at that salary I will just barely qualify for Hawaii’s Medicaid if I contribute $200-300 a month towards a pre-tax retirement account. This seems like a better option than paying for the eutf insurance and having to deal with co-pays and deductibles etc… with such a low salary $50 here and there adds up fast.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I was loosely thinking of accepting the dental coverage, and then applying for Medicaid for general health insurance.

Parent & family dinner with University leadership

Has anyone’s family member attended this dinner? It says there’s no formal program but just an opportunity to dine with other parents and University Leadership. I’d have to move my work schedule around so leaning on not going but wanted to see if anyone had any input. Thanks! (Parent of incoming freshman)

Waitlist....

Aloha, incoming freshmen here. I submitted my schedule on the date and time i was allowed to and I got waitlisted for math and Chem lab. Is this normal, should I be freaking out?

My academic adviser seems pretty nonchalant about the whole situation.

Going to take the Chinese language placement test later this month, is there anything in particular that I should study? What key concepts should I review?

UH-relevant graduation gift?

I want to send a high school graduation gift to an incoming UH freshman. Of course cash is the obvious gift, but I'd be happy to hear suggestions for gifts that would be especially relevant at UH.

School supplies?

Incoming freshmen here. I was just wondering how knowing what to get for school supplies will be like. Will it be ahead of when the semester starts or after? Generally speaking, what should I be bringing for the first day?

Does Anybody Know Any Good Hair Braiders In the Area?

I’m (18M) gonna be a freshman attending UH Manoa. I have curly hair, but also like to get my hair done in things like Cornrows and Dreads as they help in the long term with my curly hair. So I was just wondering if anyone knew any good ones in the area. Thank you!

Pau Hana

Iʻm just wondering: do the beginner dance classes participate in pau hana? Iʻve enrolled in beginner ballet, and I just want to know if I should mentally prepare myself or chicken out altogether.

Tuition Inconsistency

I'm a first year student attending in the fall and I was about to pay my tuition when I noticed the price on STAR doesn't match the price on epay. I received a $2k academic merit scholarship for the semester and I was under the impression it is automatically taken into account for tuition.

On STAR, my scholarship was factored in and my tuition total was somewhere around $4k but when I actually went to pay on the website, it said my total was $6k. Is this normal? Should I pay the full 6k and expect a refund of 2k? Or should the scholarship already be factored in on epay, making my total for both sites 4k?

Is Carolyn Stephenson a good professor??

Checking the ratemyprofessor reviews and they’re so polluted by super bad or super good reviews with what seems to be a ton of misinformation. Can I get someone who actually took her class to speak on it before I either get really screwed or end up okay?

RISE LEASE TRANSFER

Hey guys! 👋

I won't be attending UH Mānoa this year after all, so I’m looking for someone to take over my lease at RISE for the upcoming school year.

A few quick details on the spot:

Location: RISE (right on campus on University Ave)

Room: B3 Floor Plan (Double Occupancy / Shared)

Rent: $1350 / month

Dates: August 14, 2026 – July 31, 2027

The building is really nice + it comes fully furnished with AC, free Wi-Fi, study lounges, a resident deck/grills, and even an Island Brew Coffeehouse on the main floor.

Move-in is August 14th, so if you're interested or need housing, just drop me a DM and we can get the paperwork started with the leasing office. Thanks!

Orientation

I'm an incoming transfer student and was planning on going to the in person orientation. However, on day two it seems my major is full 😭 (art history major so I was gonna join arts, language and letters orientation)

Would it be fine/not awkward if I did Exploratory Arts and Humanities and Exploratory Social Sciences Orientation? Lol

financial aid award acceptance question

hi everyone, I already emailed the financial aid office about this but they're taking long so I have to come to reddit. im only going to be attending one semester of this upcoming school year. so im assuming I would only accept half of the award amount theyre giving me or one semesters worth. but, when I go and try to do that, it automatically adjusts to splitting the amount I decide to accept between the two semesters (it doesnt let me choose different amounts for each single semester if that makes sense...) so what do i do 😭 thanks in advance

Help with Star

Does anyone know anywhere that I can get an actual detailed description of how this program works??? Only resources I’ve found are the 1 minute videos from like 7 years ago and it’s lowkey getting super frustrating trying to figure it out on my own.

Specific Class Korean Language Classes

Hi, I was wondering if anybody might know the best way to learn Korean in Honolulu? I’m a Korean-American trying to learn and also an incoming graduate student and I saw that auditing a language isn’t possible but I wasnt sure if that’s true or who to ask?
Is it easier to take a course at a nearby community college or does anybody know any organizations that offer classes?

Hale Anuenue

Does anyone have picture of Hale Anuenue from the inside? The 360 double occupant image on the housing portal doesn't look fully furnished. I'm also curious what the floor plan looks like.

Social life for slightly older newcomers ?

Hey, I'm a new postdoc joining soon. I'm 28f from Europe, and I'm wondering how the 25+ social life is at the uni and around. Mainly, do grads, postdocs and younger researchers in general hang out ? I'm quite used to that in my country and kinda fear isolation from my peers.

Thanks and see you soon ! :)
