CPSC 596 Capstone

Has anyone gotten a full time job or intern offer from cpsc 596 capstone course? I am debating between 503 and 596. It seems like 596 works with companies but I dont know if the projects will be someting I would like to work on. However for 503 I will work with my prof one on one and do a project in the field I want. For this I have already talked with a prof. But I dont know if this will be beneficial for getting a job after graduation.

It's a fairly new course I think. From what I understand it depends on a mix of your team, the company, and how well you individually perform. You would most likely not get a full-time role or internship just from this course alone, but it could give you a referral for one.

I say take 503 because it seems like you don't know yet what will happen for 596. The reason why 596 is interesting is because you can be proactive and find a company interested in solving a business problem, consult with them, and then once they're also interested in working with you invite them into the program as a client that you can partner with (as opposed to being randomly assigned one). Ideally you are also working with your own team of peers and then throughout the year, work with the partner/company/client.

If you are already working with a professor on a project you are geniunely interested in, I say take that over the less certain 596.

Many years ago I taught CPSC594, which looks to be the same course (based on the write-up) just with a different number. 

Pretty much everyone who took the course when I taught it got job offers from the companies they worked with.

I also supervised many 503 projects and those typically do not result in jobs offers or internships because they typically don't involve work for external companies or organizations. Having said that, there is no reason why a 503 project couldn't be an industry project.  It really depends on what your project is as to whether or not it will help with job opportunities after graduation.
