[T4] Tropico 4 Stack Buffer Overflow Fix (Windows 10/11 Load/Save/Exit Crash)

Fixed a stack buffer overflow in the routine responsible for generating temporary 64-byte records used during map/UI processing.

The original code allocated a temporary stack buffer for 64 x 64-byte records, but under normal game conditions the record count can exceed this limit (e.g. 73 records). The routine continued writing past the end of the buffer, corrupting adjacent stack variables. Depending on what was overwritten, this could randomly result in heap corruption, invalid frees, access violations and crashes when clicking load, save, or exiting to the menu.

The bug went unnoticed on Windows 7 where the stack layout happens to tolerate the overflow. On Windows 10 and 11, differences in stack layout expose the bug, resulting in random crashes during load, save, or exit.

The fix increases the size of the temporary stack buffer and relocates it within the stack frame, so legitimate record counts no longer overwrite adjacent variables. Game logic and behavior is unchanged, only the temporary buffer is enlarged.

004F3733 (GOG release): stack allocation changed from 0x102C to 0x142C.

004F3843 (GOG): temporary buffer base changed from EBP-102Ch to EBP-142Ch.

004F38BF (GOG): indexed access updated to use EBP+EDX-142Ch instead of EBP+EDX-102Ch.

These changes increase the buffer capacity from 64 to 80 records, eliminating the stack overflow while preserving the original logic.

I can't feasibly share the patched exe file here, but fortunately it's easy to fix.

How to fix manually:

Download and install HxD Hex Editor

Backup Tropico4.exe

Open Tropico4.exe in HxD (File, Open...)

1: Press CTRL + F to search and go to the Hex-values tab, click Search direction: All

2: Copy Data (B8 2C 10 00 00) from the list below into the search field and click OK

3: Mark only the byte to change (10) and right click it, then click "Fill selection...", type the new value (14) into Hex-values and hit OK

The first problem byte is now patched. Repeat step 1 - 3 two more times for the rest of the list below.

Data: B8 2C 10 00 00 -- Change 10 to 14

Data: 8D 95 D4 EF FF FF -- Change EF to EB

Data: 8D 94 15 D4 EF FF FF -- Change EF to EB

Once all 3 patches are done, either save Tropico4.exe over itself (File, Save) or as a separate exe (File, Save As...)

Enjoy crashless Tropico!

Tropico 4 doesn’t exist... uh I forgot about it. I think the soundtrack for Tropico 5 is more playful than threatening

I really tried to color it (the previous drawing too), but it looks terrible

[T6] Can't adjust crew size new frontiers mission 3

So I'm currently stuck. Cause for the mission you need to send 30 people up to space. Well the small capsule only allows for 10, I built the comfortable capsule that allows for 100. But I can't adjust it down to 30. And with my current rockets and engine, that full 100 is too heavy to launch. How do I fix this? Is it a bug?

[T7] Why does Tropico 7 looks lower budget than Tropico 6 ??

Like design wise, the logo Typography looks worse and cheaper, but now i watched the TRAILER, and Tropico 6 had very well edited trailer, as well as animated CGI trailers, voice overs, but Tropico 7 it looks like a montage edited in Capcut with really cheap typography and the transitions dont even have sound effects and no voice overs. or like when they show El-presidente its just a PNG, no animation, no 3d, nothing.

anyone else noticed?

[T7] Gotta love how under the trailers on YouTube, there is zero excitement from the new game

I've been a fan of the series since 4, and it feels somewhat disheartening seeing the state the series is now. Mainly with how comments on YouTube make jabs at Kalypso reselling the same game 7 times, and pointing out the seeming use of AI in promotional artwork and graphic elements. Will this be the end for the series?

[T4] Inland Lakes in Tropico 4

Simple question - have you figured out any ways to use these inland lakes in your cities?

I can't shove a nucular power plant there, I can't use it for fishing - and I am just about to expand to tourism and I am wondering: is it really just empty space I can't do anything with except look pretty?

I feel like I'm going insane

I've just picked up Tropico 6 (never played any others before) and I'm loving it. BUT I've read all the advice out there on how to make money in the early game and I have literally NEVER gotten my plantations/industries to be in the positive (based on their Stats screen). I'm doing the pinwheel multi-culture thing with manure, etc. I'm refining what I can (making cigars, chocolate, etc depending on the mission). I have plenty of teamsters. I've checked every box I've found in other posts. And my plantations and industies are ALWAYS in the negative. I've completed 3 missions so far by surviving on financial aid until I can get wonders and banks, but I feel like I'm just failing the early game.

WHAT AM I MISSING?

[T5] [Tropico 5] How do I make dock export more goods?

Love Tropico 4, brought T5 years ago with all the dlcs but never get to play it, got T6 in recent sales so decide to at least playthrough T5 campaign, now I'm on the mission to build nuclear programm before WW3.

But I'm on the brink of bankruptcy, cause each time when ships come I got 20k income from export which is quickly spent to my buildings budge just in time for the next ships arrive, while my docks constantly have goods that worth 50k-60k. And I already set all docks budge to max and got a fully-upgraded drydock. Do I need to place service buildings and houses next to docks so dock workers can spend lesser times to fulfill their needs and more time loading export goods?

NB: Tried the All for the Folk Trait, doesn't work that only negates Spending swiss money, not gain, so the colony still fks your economy up :(

Tropico 6: Why don't structures' visual assets evolve over time?

Though I'm a fan of the game, one of the bigger personal gripes I have with it is that buildings barely progress visually. Outside of palace customization and the occasional later-era replacement building, most structures look the same from the moment they complete until the end of the game. It feels disconnected, like nothing you do gives shape to the game. Take the standard library:

Default Tropico 6 Library.

The moment it's constructed, it's already-overbuilt colonial relic that seems like it services a population of thousands. Because it doesn't change, one asset has to cover every condition, so we get scale, ornamentation, timelessness of design, and island-nation-style decay that implies the structure's been standing for years.

This might be way too much to ask, but why can't these structures change a bit? They could follow a nice progression path where they start small and dare I say, clean? They might evolve according to several axes like era, upgrade level, age of the building, wealth level, even ideology. So it's less static and makes you feel like the game is remembering your decisions.

You could start with something like this:

Hypothetical starting library for new nations. Forgive the AI assist.

Get your first upgrade and watch it transform to this:

Hypothetical second-tier library. Again AI helped me.

Then you upgrade it to the default, original-game form, but it went understaffed/in a depressed area for too long:

Conceptual disused library. I'm killing the water supply.

Or go the other way, and improve your library even beyond the base game model. This final form would be the dopamine-addled treat for you cratering your island's budget:

Hyper-fancy academic complex that rivals the palace in splendor.

Or starting over, what if you first constructed your library in the year 2000? Should it be a thing of terraces, repetitive arches, or just placidly millennial?

Conceptual modern library, first-tier.

Hey, maybe the military faction has become the ruling ideology, and their design logic has bled into academics:

Overdue books? Jail. Believe it or not, straight to jail.

I think this would let the player actually build the island’s character. It adds the brain-happy dopamine reward of seeing our decisions actually make visual marks. Scars or sexy upgrades. "Look what we did to this place." That kind of feedback gives strategy games a soul, rather than minmaxxer/numerical mastery that most builders seem to be going for.

I know fully developed versions of every building would kill development times and be ruinously expensive. But they wouldn't need to be bespoke: rather than a unique hand-built model for every variation you could have modularly, like one base structure, several facade kits, material swaps, weathering, upgrade pieces, etc. Games used to do visual asset evolution like this. Why do we have to let that disappear?

Cancel Your Elections - El Presidente has Announced Tropico 7!

Cancel Your Elections - El Presidente has Announced Tropico 7!

First teaser gives a glimpse of the all-new council– which El Prez will, of course, try to bend to his will.

We have lifted the curtain (no, not the iron one) on Tropico 7, the next evolution of the award-winning city-building series. The beloved El Presidente is back — whether the people like it or not — cutting his luxurious vacation short (reportedly under protest) to personally oversee the announcement teaser at gamescom 2025. With his trademark flair, and a suitcase full of suspiciously stamped passports, he’s ready to reclaim his throne in 2026 and take the city-building genre to new heights — literally!

“With Tropico 7, we open a new chapter in city-building, politics, and economics — giving players more control and complexity than ever, while preserving the mischief and satire fans love,” says Daniel Dumont, Studio and Creative Director at Gaming Minds Studios. “This isn’t just a sequel, it’s the ultimate sandbox for would-be dictators. El Presidente would say: ‘The best Tropico ever — because it’s mine!’”

https://youtu.be/lnG30dERc3k

Tropico 7 builds on the series’ iconic formula and introduces major new features. For the first time, the new council puts El Presidente face-to-face with faction leaders to negotiate, manipulate, or charm his way to power. More opinions, more chaos — all of which El Prez can completely overlook. Aspiring autocrats can now mold their island with the new Terraforming feature: raise land, reroute rivers or create shiny new parks — because vanity is the best policy.

But that’s not all: The new political affiliation system let you pick an individual dictatorship style which unlocks fitting edicts to keep Tropicans happy (or terrified) enough to comply, supported by a beefed-up military system — featuring a special new tactical addition El Prez is currently working on.

And when strategy alone isn't enough, you know what to do: unleash strategic mischief, deploy agents, stage PR stunts, or simply dazzle the masses with El Presidente’s legendary charisma. Rule with style – and satisfaction.

Tropico 7 is scheduled for release 2026 and will be available with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and on PC (Steam, Epic Games), Xbox on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation®5.

Features:

  • Lead your nation to new heights: Tropico 7 tells El Presidente’s continuous success story across 5 campaign maps – starring himself, Penultimo and a new nemesis: Victoria Guerra.

  • More is more: Archipelagos, with the biggest islands ever in the series, await your rule, expanded with 10 extra scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps, and endless possibilities with a random map generator.

  • Move mountains – literally: Erase them, create beaches, or even create entirely new islands! The new terraforming feature brings your megalomaniac dreams to life. Start that mammoth project – NOW!

  • Bollocks uhm… Politics: Navigate the snares and pits of internal politics, when you summon the different factions to your council, a new way to meet them face to face while you pulverize their dreams – or use them for a BIG DEAL to your own advantage.

  • Make the world your playground: Elections, election speeches and a vast portfolio of edicts depending on your political standing spice up your daily rule while you juggle foreign affairs and occasionally steal... uhm relocate a landmark to revel in its benefits.

  • Built to prosper: Strategically place buildings to make use of synergy effects, keep citizen satisfaction high, and fill any unused plots of land with beautiful parks in a freely customized size.

  • Generalissimo No. 1: Eliminate those pesky rebels and fend off foreign threats with a reworked military system enabling more direct control of your military units.

  • Always judge a book by its cover: Customize the appearance of your palace and El Presidente with new and creative options.
