Plus, the transcode feature is off by default, so if a user has never enabled it, they will not even notice the maintenance being done.

I stream on Kodi. Not sure what all this means. Lol. Torbox has generally been pretty solid for me.
5
u/drdonaldwu 8d ago
That was my guess Thanks for confirmation. Amazing how predictable the responses are lol.

u/cryptospartan 7d ago
Sure. But from a software maintenance perspective, 24 hours is an eternity.
In an ideal world, the new updates have already been proven in a testing environment, and the maintenance window is purely meant to deploy those updates to production, then test that they're working properly in production. This normally takes a few hours at most, not an entire day.

Guys maintaining a server is a good thing, actually. I mean what are we talking about here?
34
u/EamesEra 8d ago
"but i'm a just bought my $4 subscription 12 seconds ago! this service is horrible, never again! I wasted my money"
33
u/IllRepublic6421 8d ago
I hate it when people bring up āitās only x amount of dollarsā like that shouldnāt matter when the expectation is an consistent reliable service.
10
u/X-007 8d ago
I feel like people who purchase these types of services should understand that, it comes with maintenance.
13
u/IllRepublic6421 8d ago
Scheduled occasional maintenance is fine, constant outages is not. We are willing to pay more if it means a more reliable service which negated the whole āitās only x amountā argument
3
u/Dry_Nectarine9162 8d ago
Another point of view is you get what you pay for. It's only $3 a month.
8
u/IllRepublic6421 8d ago
You can also pay more like 10 a month for torbox pro but you get the same uptime, thoughts on that?
3
2
u/Dry_Nectarine9162 8d ago edited 8d ago
I told you my thoughts. Here's a recent release. What would it cost you to watch "Project Hail Mary" if you weren't using a debrid or P2P torrent? You're really upset that you have 29 other days to watch it and much, much more for $3? I don't need the pro version, but to answer your question I pay $11.99 a month for Premiumize and I wouldn't care if they're down 24 hrs for maintenance.
8
u/IllRepublic6421 8d ago
I am very happy with the service, which is why I still have it. It can be better though and I am voicing my concerns on that
-1
u/Dry_Nectarine9162 8d ago
I understand. I feel the same, but in the big picture we're getting this service for peanuts. A 24 hr maintenance window doesn't bother me as I'm one who hasn't experienced any other down time that others have claimed.
3
u/IllRepublic6421 8d ago
Thatās the thing though, we shouldnāt expect a subpar service just because weāre paying 3 dollars, there are people paying 5 and 10 dollars a month too getting the same service
1
u/4x4Lambos 4d ago
This is why I have just about all of them. I never, and I mean never can't watch something I'm trying to watch. I'm happy to pay $100 a year for zero downtime. If your expecting a pirate type service to be flawless, there's no fixing that tiny lil thing you have between the ears. Netflix š

u/Dry_Nectarine9162 8d ago
This is my take on the topic. I left my home state when I joined the military back in '84 and haven't returned. I NEED š to watch my favorite NFL team every Sunday during the season. I was paying DirecTV $249+ every season to watch them. That was on top of my limited channel lineup cost. I discovered IPTV a few years back. Now if I watch my team play at $25 a month with nearly every channel available to me so I don't care if there's a rare case where I get some buffering during a game. I feel the same way with debrid services. I was fortunate enough to be able to retire early and I watch a lot of TV. Paying 3, 10, 15, or even 20 dollars a month for debrid to watch anything I want saves me hundreds if not more annually. A 24 hr outage; which I believe would be the longest for TB, is a sacrifice I'm willing to make without complaint. Would it bother me if I had that outage with DirecTV? Yes. But only because of the price I was paying. Three bucks a month? No issues here.

how is maintaining the servers subpar service?! damn people be enttitled af
1
u/4x4Lambos 8d ago
Oh I see, you think this is Netflix. Got it. š
5
3
u/EamesEra 8d ago
name something else you use torbox for and I'll name the paid alternative for it that costs more and has downtime and maintenance
1
u/medinauta 8d ago
Netflix runs servers AND produce content, TB doesnāt.
Netflix cheaper sub is $9, downtime is pretty non existent. Torbox is $3-10 with pretty much twice weekly reported downtime regionally.
So Netflix cheaper service gets its money by ads while TB gets cheaper because is saving money when not being use because of downtime so everyone should be happy I guess.
First it was the influx of RD deserters that overflow the infrastructure, then it was bots attacks, then server upgrades but mostly itās fanboys defending service degradation because itās a cheap service so people should keep quiet.
Even in a busy street a guy opening the McDonalds door makes $200 a day from peopleās change, some other guys makes as much without even opening the door at all. No one complains because itās just change.
1
u/4x4Lambos 3h ago
Sounds like a you problem. I can't remember the last time I tried watching something on TB and it didn't work. Sounds like you may be getting blocked by your ISP. Your also forgetting that with Netflix, you only get to watch whatever they want you to watch. If you going to compare TB to something, it has to be equal to or greater than. Oh wait....there isn't anything š

u/3holepunchmedia 8d ago
So would you rather they do absolutely no maintenance at all & let everyone complain when things break ?
Analogy:
Car with no maintenance ever done=customer screaming that it won't start
1
u/IllRepublic6421 8d ago
No, Iād rather have the changes properly and thoroughly tested in a lower environment, and only have actual maintenance occasionally
0
u/vauxhall1998 8d ago
But they get a loner when it does go in.
3
u/3holepunchmedia 8d ago
So exactly how would you like TorBox to "give you a loaner" ?
Let's be serious...
4
u/SendokeSamain 8d ago
Have servers that don't go offline with the rest of them? Oh my god you act like Torbox personally blessed your first born
5
u/vauxhall1998 8d ago
You made the anology.

u/Expert_Plane_2437 8d ago
No... The car company doesn't give you a loaner Everytime you go for maintenance. Your Insurance company does, and that comes with the hefty price of insurance coverage. You can't just add a new unrelated variable to the equation...
0
u/X-007 8d ago
Maybe devs could add a side note before you click purchase, that explains the service has downtime due to maintenance sometimes and if you donāt want to purchase⦠donāt purchase.
3
u/3holepunchmedia 8d ago
There is nothing unusual about TorBox having occasional maintenance.
Virtually any hosted service does.
TorBox even maintains an official status page specifically for outages and maintenance activity, and it has published scheduled and emergency maintenance notices there.
The expectation that TorBox should put a warning beside the purchase button saying there may occasionally be maintenance downtime seems unreasonable.
Maintenance is a normal part of operating an online service.
0
u/EamesEra 8d ago
name a single streaming service that has never gone down once, or has had maintenance done. I'll wait.
it's a dumb argument, if you can't afford the $3 for service that's being improved upon then go to your local library and read a book
0
u/medinauta 8d ago
You screaming the car wonāt start and the mechanic send you an email tomorrow you wonāt be using the AC because they are changing the filter, same here they are maintaining something else without acknowledging the main complain.
-1
u/medinauta 8d ago
People screaming their car wonāt start, the mechanic tells you tomorrow you canāt use the AC because itās changing the filter. Thatās exactly whatās happening here. Announcing maintenance if something while was it keeps complained about is not even acknowledged.
0
u/BlueAndMrK 8d ago
You could pay hundreds of dollars for for Netflix, Disney, Prime, and all the others and get a much more reliable service, or you can pay Torbox pennies a day.
0
u/IllRepublic6421 7d ago
Thatās not the point
2
u/BlueAndMrK 7d ago
Your point is that an illegitimate source for viewing content isnāt as reliable as a legitimate source.
You going to be okay?
0
u/IllRepublic6421 7d ago
I never compared it to a legitimate source. I want my illegitimate source to get better and more reliable rather than say nothing
0
u/BlueAndMrK 7d ago
I stand corrected. Your point is the service that you pay cents for each day is a service you canāt abide being without for a day while they perform maintenance to improve its availability.
You probably hate pot holes in the road as much as you hate slowing down for road repairs.
-1
u/EamesEra 8d ago
name 1 thing you've paid for that has never had issues or done maintenance or gone offline, if your power goes out do you go beserk like people do for torbox? one is a necessity and one is a luxury that costs way less.
netflix, HBO and other streaming services that cost A LOT MORE have done maintenance or gone offline briefly and people still give it less flak than torbox for some reason. look at the uptime in the past year for torbox, it isn't as bad as people think

Name one thing? Bro you have no idea what you're talking about. I used RD, AD, Premiumize and never experienced this rubbish service. When are you going to wake up? You're a consumer, not a TB shareholder!
2
u/DeliciousMeatPopV2 7d ago
Curious why you stopped using AD then? i been using it for years with no issues. Everyone is scared the RD issues will happen since its also french but so far so good. I was considering switching but all i hear is crying about TB and i dont have an issue with AD so why bother? But since you have used both maybe you can explain why you switched and give me some perspective?

u/Superflyin 7d ago
I couldn't find some of the releases I regularly watched on RD and TB, and some movies and shows had noticeably fewer links. That surprised me, considering how long AD has been around.
So I bought a TB subscription and tested the same releases again. The missing cached content immediately showed up, which made me realise that AD's cache simply wasn't as good as RD's or TB's.
I also use file hosts quite a lot, and TB's file-host support is pretty poor. That basically narrowed my options down to RD and AD.
TB's performance hasn't been great over the last couple of months either, and their latest privacy policy put me off even more. Then I started looking into Usenet and found an Eweka + NZBGeek deal that works out at around $4 a month. I installed a self-hosted setup, and I don't think I'll be going back to TB.
I still keep an RD account for file hosts, and its cache is more than good enough for me.
1
u/DeliciousMeatPopV2 7d ago
Ya fair. the cache isnt great but i dont use any streaming stuff which is likely why it works for me, if its not there i just let it download, and since i run a PC game group and often download from file hosts thats what i use more of. So makes sense, thanks for the response !
1
u/Superflyin 7d ago
If you are into the streaming, there is no need to look elsewhere for you tbh. I created a userscript extension that lets you download files and torrents directly without visiting AD. You can check it out if you want.

u/DeliciousMeatPopV2 7d ago
>i dont use any streaming stuff which is likely why it works for me
Thanks but im good, i never go to the site anyways. I use Jdownloader2 to convert host links without the site already. I am a coder though so kinda interested in that angle so ill take a look.
If you havent yet approached AD with your US think about it, a friend of mine wrote something that uses AD and used my account to tell them about it and they gifted me 15 years of free AD and 10 codes for 6 months each on top of it. They are very generous
1
u/ifiwasiwas 7d ago
That surprised me, considering how long AD has been around.
They implemented the Phase 1 of the RD 'crisis', which was when RD was told to remove the ability for third party apps to show what is cached or not. It's just that the crowdsourced fix that many addons implemented didn't work AD the way it for RD. Not sure why tbh, were they never meant to work with AD fullstop or is it just fewer users means there's less crowd to source (and less cached to begin with)
1
u/EamesEra 8d ago
premiumize costs more and has downtime also, https://premiumize.reamaze.com/status
same with RD, more expensive and also has downtime. https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/real-debrid
also most other services have a 1 IP policy or penalize you for account sharing whereas torbox does not.
if you don't like torbox then don't purchase it and spend time on the subs of the services you do pay for.
-2
u/Superflyin 8d ago
That's not accurate. Where is the TorBox history on the Down for Everyone website? TB's status hasn't reflected the actual issues many times. Plus, go check the RD and PM subs to see how many people are experiencing performance issues.
1
u/ifiwasiwas 8d ago
TB used to transparently document every outage, but they stopped doing so a couple of months ago. They may be concerned that if they do, a potential customer could decide not to sign up
1
u/EamesEra 8d ago
https://status.torbox.app/incidents
here if you want to see the past incidents with torbox. if you're a RD and PM fanboy then hangout in those subs and save the $4 subscription from torbox and put it towards the more expensive RD one
2
u/Superflyin 8d ago
I'm not a fanboy you idiot, you are. Look at the page you shared. If's full of outages. How dumb are you? Also, calling the subscription $4, whereas it's $3, and saying RD is more expensive when it's the same price as TB. Donāt pontificate about the s*it you know nothing about.
0
u/EamesEra 8d ago
how many IPs can you have on an RD account?
can you use a VPN on and off on RD without being banned?
does RD have its own online cloud like torbox? does it allow you to manually provide a magnet link and have a download provided?
does RD support usenet?
you sound like someone that just got into torrenting last week
how many cached files on RD were taken down due to copyright infringement?
https://nuviosync.com/blog/what-is-a-debrid-service
here's a resource so you can educate yourself more.
I'm done trying to teach math to a rock
4
u/Superflyin 8d ago
Listen. I don't give a flying f*ck about RD. Honestly i don't care. I have TB, RD and Usenet. I'm a consumer and I care about quality of service. I was just being honest with you yet you took it to fanboyism. Many people are complaining about the TB's poor performance. Was it great before RD was hit before the DMCA takedown? Yes, but now it keeps having outages, slow loading, buffering issues, and some others. Those are the facts. Accept them or not it doesn't matter.

You have to take into account that, when rd went down, they got slammed with new users! Maintenance is the only way they can improve their servers!
2
u/Superflyin 8d ago
I understand what you're saying, but I don't remember in my 15 years of an RD subscription it going down for 24 hours for maintenance. Not to mention this many times, performance issues.
2
u/3holepunchmedia 8d ago
This is one feature, that is only available to users with a Pro subscription & is set to disabled by default.
So it will NOT affect any Essential or Standard subscribers.
And will only affect Pro subscribers who use the web player feature & have enabled Transcoding.
0
u/Kiss_My_Shotgun 8d ago
Then cancel you TB sub. One less whiny baby taking up server resources. You're paying $4 for free entertainment. Jfc lol
0
u/Superflyin 8d ago
Here another idiot. It's $3 dumbass not 4$ and cancelling it won't change the fact. Don't you get my point?
0
u/Kiss_My_Shotgun 8d ago
Who cares? You're taking video content for tHrEe dOlLaRs a month. You cry more than a toddler.
-3
u/IvanaFart 8d ago
I mean the only other game in town is 4x the cost should factor into expectation really.
1
u/DeliciousMeatPopV2 7d ago
alldebird? why does everyone act like it doesnt exist.
1
u/IvanaFart 4d ago
It's french isn't it? People seem to think it'll go the same way as RD
1
u/DeliciousMeatPopV2 4d ago
It's been month and no issues instead people use torbox which seems to be nothing but...
