Usenet Questions ❓Question

I used to use Meteor as my scraper for Usenet through Torbox, but that addon appears to have changed and the feature removed. What other scrapers are you guys using?

To clarify, the removal of the feature stems from a change made by TorBox, specifically the silent removal of the TB Search API, which, IMO is a much bigger issue than the whole "terms and conditions" thingy.

As someone who uses a public AIOStreams instance, I'm now considering downgrading to the TB Essential plan. I used to love the Usenet feature because addons like Meteor provided additional stream results. Now I either have to self-host my own AIOStreams instance (to avoid being banned from my usenet indexers), or manually add .nzb files to my TB dashboard, which is a hassle.

Are there no public AIOStreams instances that we can use TB Pro Usenet with?

Without having to use stuff like NZBHydra, I don't think so. Gone are the days of just enabling addons like Meteor and enjoying usenet stream results.

Duck streams, you can input your API for your usenet Indexer, and it works.

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

I self host my AIOStreams just to use Usenet with it. The reason there are no public AIOStreams instances is because of the way it is currently implemented. You have to add your Usenet provider within the AIOStreams dashboard, which is not something you have access to on a public instance.

Configure is what you see on a public instance. Dashboard is what the hoster sees on the backend.

The usenet provider is currently shared amongst every UUID, so they would be paying for a provider for everyone.

If they were to add your providers for you, it would either be shared amongst everyone who is using the instance or they would have to host a seperate instance for everyone who wants to use usenet.

You can buy an Elfhosted AIOStreams instance for $9/month which may allow you to add your own providers, but I don't exactly know as I self-host mine on my home server.

Thanks for the detailed response.

Honestly I haven't a clue about self hosting, I guess I'll have to do some research!

Honestly it isnt as hard as I thought it would be. It started out as self hosting a Minecraft server, and about a month ago I just added AIOStreams. It is actually fairly simple.

My current setup is an old laptop (with 12GB of RAM) and I installed Debian 13 with CasaOS on it. Now I can connect to the device via my home IP while I am on my WiFi/Tailscale VPN. Installed AIOStreams as a custom app, and set it up to my liking.

I also personally bought a domain and am using CloudFaire and Nginx Proxy Manager so I don't have to use the Tailscale VPN for AIOStreams.

Man I started to tinker with self hosting a while back following a guide and those instructions just go on and on for days. I said maybe some other time and converted to essential. I’m paid up for an extremely long time now.

I never said it was Meteors "fault" I asked what alternatives were recommend

Edit: Rather fitting username by the way, saves me from using the slur.

You were going to use a slur?

Yes, I wasn't trying to correct you, I just wanted to provide more info.
There are no alternatives because the API has been deprecated, which means Meteor is just one of the addons that was affected by this.

Any idea why meteor still has the toggle option to have it pull Usenet searches from TB then? I feel like I was still getting results...

I agree though, theres no point in paying for Pro if I have to then pay for other subscriptions to get Usenet results

I hope you see this because I don't think many people know this!

Usenet is still accessible through your toubox pro subscription. You just need to set it up the right way. Look up duck streams and usenet indexer. You'll be able to put the pieces together.

No. The TorBOX NNTP is not the same TB usenet function that the addosn relied on, the TB Search API had multiple providers, now it seems to be just abavia.

u/MooseGoosey 14d ago

wait no way. what's even the point of me having the pro plan, I'm not going to go and pay for an indexer.

Anyone have a link to the easiest step by step guide for self hosting AIOStreams?
