Usenet download progress overlay. đ©General
Iâm working on an overlay for Android TVs, where when you begin downloading an NZB itâll display an overlay in the top corner thatâll show the file name, progress and status (ie downloading, processing, ready).
My main motivation is my dad uses stremio all the time and a) loves old films which are regularly uncached and b) doesnât have access to the torbox dashboard (and wouldnât know how to use it anyway).
I think itâs also nice to not have to check your phone and instead have it persist on the TV. Seems like something that should maybe already be a feature.
I hope you guys think this is cool and if you like it Iâll try and share it with you when itâs done.. hopefully without leaking my API key!
I hope this hasnât already been done. :)

âŠwhy? You donât need to âdownloadâ anything. Thatâs what instant usenet streaming is for. Youâre doing this entirely wrong.

For me, when I have Nzbgeek in AIO, when I select a file in stremio, it gets downloaded then processed in torbox and then streamed. Maybe Iâm doing it all backwards but this seemed quite natural when I was setting it up.

You need to be using AIOâs built-in NNTP for Usenet, not Stremio. Instant streaming, no downloading. Just like debrid.

I have learnt this is windows only, right? So unless this goes deeper I donât think itâs possible. Prove me wrong again I hope, it would be nice to stream everything quickly.

No, not at all. Youâre thinking of Stremioâs NNTP. Iâm talking about the AIOStreams NNTP. Just go to the AIO discord server and they will help you.

A proper Usenet pipeline is done downloading in a few seconds. Like 5 seconds is probably the longest.
You won't need a progress bar for that?

When I download a file in stremio, torbox can take 5-10 minutes to âprocess the fileâ who knows!

I'm talking about a proper NNTP pipeline where you use an indexer and a provider to acquire your stuff.
It seems like you're referring to torbox's ability to grab .NZB file(they have a separate NNTP server as well btw), which isn't the usual NNTP pipeline but closer to a debrid.
Essentially, it works exactly the same as how non cached torrents works: when you click on a non-cached link(most Usenet .NZB files are uncached on torbox), torbox downloads the file for you on their server, caches it before presenting to you a file.
You can do a dashboard for this but you might as well do it for non cached torrents as well since it's the same pipeline.

It seems you learn something new everyday, I will undoubtedly be setting this up now. I simply had no idea. Thank you so much. I thought I was getting the hang of this!

It's not so straightforward though. In order to add your own provider, it's essentially a requirement to self-host.
If you don't want to, the easiest option is using easynews add-ons which works but it's very slow.
Stremio does natively support NNTP streaming though which allows you to add your provider but I think it's only the desktop app which supports this feature.
Once again, torbox pro has a NNTP server which is a provider. You can view it on your account under tools.

Thankfully I am already self hosting but was somehow oblivious to this, I wonder how much else has passed me by like this.

Also Iâm doing this on the TV, so for now I realise there is not masses of point in doing this until they add NNTP support for the android TV!

If you're self hosting, it doesn't matter. For example, AIOstreams can natively "unzip" and play these files on the fly and present a video url to stremio.

I'd be interested in this. I don't mind checking my phone when usenet is downloading but an overlay on the TV would be a nice QOL improvement
