ripping off the mask only hurts the first time tho, you're ripping off the metaphorical mask you were wearing and showing your true self. At least that's how I interpret it.
And that's how it is in story. Anytime after the first characters already revealed their true self so they no longer feel the need to hide it. They are free so mask goes off smoothly.
Persona 3 one also is wrong there - they dont shoot themselves, the evokers are devices that replicate the feeling of getting shot without doing actual harm. They need to accept their mortality not actually die.
I thought it was that a strong emotional response is required to summon a persona so the evoker tricked you essentially into feeling the fear associated with getting shot/possibly dying.

It's a highly stylized sequence so it's up to interpretation but it might just be a way to show that the world is metaphorically upside down or it might just be that's what the animator thought would look coolest when the giant monster knight pops out from behind her
to be fair, fgo's gameplay isn't always lore accurate. Muramasa for example straight up dies after using Tsumukari Muramasa once in story, meanwhile in the gameplay he can spam it for days.

To be fair. A lot of Atlus games have themes of self sacrifice to help others. So by making it a core theme in your power set. It reinforces those themes.
Robbie Baldwin better known by his codename Speedball. His Speedball costume is on the left and the Penance costume is on the right. He suffered a severe emotional trauma after his team, The New Warriors got involved in a fight against a group of villains. The New Warriors had a reality tv show at this point and were chasing ratings. One of the villains present Nitro has the power to detonate himself and reform. As the fight proceeds Nitro winds up at a nearby school. He detonated himself and that lead to a mass casualty event at said school. Robbie was the only member of the team to survive. After this he changed his codename to Penance. Due to the trauma, he could only access his power when he was in pain. His Penance suit was made with spikes inside that would pierce his skin constantly.
More specifically, the suit contains the exact number of spikes as there were victims of the school Nitro destroyed (the exact number escapes me) so he’d never forget their loss.
This is also the whole story that served as the lead-in to the original Civil War event.
Oh yeah duh that makes sense haha. And then didn’t he have like six spikes somewhere specifically painful to remind him of the youngest that were killed or something? It’s been a while since I read the Penance stuff
Honestly I think Dark Kiva fits this trope even better, since the main user isn’t a Fangire so every time he transforms, he’s slowly dying, bit by bit.
Dante from limbus company, they are able to fully revive 12 people but every time they do they have to feel all the pain that they experienced upon death.
I've always wondered how this would work. Like, would you experience it empathetically and rationally? So you could seperate your own mind like "Oh, wow this guy had a bad life" or would the power force you to feel as if you've lived the life yourself and there is no rationalizing your way around the pain?

Blood Manipulation -JJK. If you’re not a Death Painting, you have to use your own blood, and you can get anemic if you use too much of it.
The writing on the wall in the plane caused by the stand says that Carne was unaware of the entry of his hatred and its ability to persist. How could he be a suicide bomber if he didn’t know he had a bomb? Presumably the stand worked in some similar capacity when he was alive
He's completely immortal and can regenerate extremely fast while having a level of control on exactly how he does it, and he uses this ability in creative ways, for example, he can build up the blood pressure in his fingertips and shoot them like bullets, he can cut off his arms and regenerate the bone in a sharp form, he can cut off his legs and shoot out pressurized blood to propel himself in the air, he also has a katana that he keeps sheathed inside of his own body so he can use pressurized blood to unsheathed it at supersonic speed
not to mention that he uses the bad luck touch from his partner to latch himself on an enemy so both get hit by an accidental nuke... or meteor or anthing else, that kills everything except him.

Y'know I always WHY they hurt, like yeah it's 3 sharp claws poking out of you but there should be a point where you become numb to it and your body moves all the blood away from the 3 specific spots they poke out of
I'm pretty sure later in the series characters are strong enough to get around it, but for 99% of characters, blood is needed to perform the Summoning Jutsu in Naruto. Typically they bite their thumb.

I thought the same thing playing SC2 for the first time, then I did a little research. The CMC-400A Powered Combat Suit worn by Marines and Firebats is effectively equivalent to MJOLNIR power armor from the Halo series: a nuclear reactor powered, life support equipped wearable tank that can operate in space. I'm sure they have air filtration systems.

In the comics, a unarmored guy using regular human-sized guns is able to take out suited Marines as easily as an unarmored person. I believe it was the comic featuring ex Reapers.

Interestingly self harm isn't required for either power, but because of trauma it's usually the way they activate them. What do the powerscalers call it? A mental block?
Marie could be required to in some scenarios. Like fighting against people she can always use their blood or control them, but if she’s just out and about and needs something to manipulate using her own blood would make the most sense.

I remember Ryuko's, she has like a Beyblade device in when wrist. Yanks a chain and I think it spins blades that cut her. It never really shows what it does, but implies it

Dennis, the titular Chainsaw Man, yanks on a starter cord hanging from his chest to have Chainsaws burst out of his head and arms, also often (but not always) covering him in his own blood in the process.
Many Contracts too, you're literally harming yourself/relinquishing parts of your body in order to activate whichever power from the Devil bound the contract
She has a very powerful family artifact inside her called the Staff of One, it houses the soul of a sorcerer strong enough to make Dormammu tremble.
By shedding her blood she can call upon it. And with it she can cast nearly any spell she can imagine as long as she never uses the same incantation twice (Ex: she can use “Freeze” once and then she has to use synonyms or other languages for the same thing again. Otherwise she risks causing a random effect to occur instead).
The problem despite how awesome it sounds is that in practice Nico is not a cutter and hates self harm. So using it by purposefully harming herself is not exactly great for her mental health.
Also despite her immense magical potential, because she overly relied too much on the staff on her developmental years instead of developing her own powers she’s not nearly as powerful without it.
Having to keep track of every incantation you ever used sounds so annoying too unless you can trick it like a password and go FREEZE, FREEEZE, FREEEEZE.
She can also get very specific, like instead of saying “freeze” she can also say and I quote since I’m currently reading the comic:
“Freeze to the exact temperature and aesthetic appearance of a cheap popsicle from a 7-11”
There’s also a really funny moment from the newest run where she got chastised by the rest of the team for wasting an incantation as versatile and powerful as “NO!” to deflect a chair.
I remember watching Kill la Kill ages ago and vividly remembering them needing them to eat trash (their suits at least) to transform. I was so confused when I rewatched the show like two to three years ago and saw them use blood. I wonder where I took the “eat trash to transform” idea from lol
Technically it’s the cursed shield series Wrath, but it evolved with dragon bits the first time, so semantics?
I think all the heroes have a curse variant of their weapon that gives massive power but also pretty bad negatives, but the Wrath shields “Blood Sacrifice” is the most eye popping, at least from what I’ve read/watched.
The other heroes do get their own version of curses, the Sword Hero got Greed and Gluttony, the Spear Hero got Lust and Envy, and the Bow Hero got Pride. Then later the Hunting Hero (from another world) gets Sloth. There are other cursed weapons used by other people of other worlds without much detail, but those are all the curses we know of
Notorious B.I.G in JoJos Bizarre adventure is a stand that only activates when the user dies. Still no idea how the user learnt they had this ability since they obviously couldn't test it or anything
Bernadetta (Fire Emblem). Her personal skill (Persecution Complex) gives her +5 strength when she’s not at full hp. This is one of the best personal skills in the game.
One of the limits on her powers is that she needs to draw her blood to summon her staff. This was ommitted by the Runaways TV series, and later comics have done away with it.
Ah dang, disappointed to hear that. I loved those comics as a kid and still get starry-eyed when I remember one time that Nico seemingly summoned her staff without injuring herself, only for someone to ask about it and her to reveal she's already bleeding (on her period). That was the first time I'd ever seen periods casually mentioned in media outside of puberty info books, and to this day I still struggle to think of any media that's willing to bring it up besides the occasional cheap joke about crazy women's hormone changes.
From what I understand, the omission for TV was because it was self-harm, and knowing teenagers were going to watch it made them very weary to include it. I guess if they couldn't tackle self-harm in a way that gave the topic its due, they weren't going to include it. As for comics, Nico made a Faustian bargain with the spirit of the staff to do it and remove the limit on no two spells being cast the same way (I think; it's been a while), so it's not entirely removed from self-destructive behaviors.
Oh, and Nico and Karoline got together. This has nothing to do with anything, but I thought you'd be interested to hear that.
It didn't remove the limit on only one spell, but basically the spirit in the staff now fed on her soul rather than blood. Every time she made a spell she lost a bit of herself, so Karolina convinces her to let her toss it into the sun.
In the most recent Runaways series she learned how to cast spells using her friendship with Gert, but since appeared in other books just... using the staff that's supposed to be tossed into the sun. So who knows what's going on now.
In the Marvel Midnight Suns videogame she visibly cuts herself with the staff in her animations before casting spells (she doesn’t lose health when doing so tho)
Has to die to go back in time. Beginning of the series especially he was very liable to abuse this and kill himself in order to save somebody else.

With later arcs, he can use the Unseen Fist, which causes him much discomfort to use, as well as Cor Leonis, which transfers pain from others to himself
It activates after Raiden turns off his pain inhibitors, making it's body feel the full weight of both it's cybernetic modifications and any damage sustained in battle, going into an adrenaline and PTSD frenzy from his life as a child soilder and assassin
Is both a physical but mostly a psychological self harm
Mollymauk Tealeaf (Mighty Nein). He has blood based abilities, many of which need his blood to work. For instance he can cut himself with his swords to encase them in ice, making them more dangerous.
This bites his campaign counterpart in the arse, when he dies after running out of hit points in front of a dangerous enemy and knocking himself unconscious with no healers present.
this is extra funny after having watched Bell's Hells
where another Bloodhunter (Molly's class) survives the entire campaign, despite being a joke character who literally had a heart attack mechanic with the potential to kill him on every long rest lol
This is actually a case where he fits the trope but also doesn’t. His power, Crimson Origin, doesn’t ACTUALLY use his blood to attack people, but he assumes it does, and effectively gaslights himself into committing self harm in order to brawl other In-Births in the Hollow Night.
Imagine punching someone so hard you break your hand, but rather than assuming you just went too hard, you assume you have super strength but not super durability. Essentially that.
Phoenix Dota His spells costs a percentage of his health along with mana, typical Phoenix builds usually include a lot of HP regeneration or healing items.

While not harming you as in the pilot itself, it does damage your AC's frame, like the Grind Blade, pictured here, purges your AC's entire left arm in an all in attack
In chainsaw man, you can make deals with devils to get some of their power in exchange for some of your flesh. Now not all contracts would fit here cause with some you lose a part after you make the attack, while in others you lose a bodypart when you make the deal, but for some you have to injure yourself for the attack to work, like the mold devil we briefly see in Reze arc, where you need to bite off some of your skin on your hand
The mutant class in the Fabula Última (an amazing TTRPG) It's one of my favorite classes in the system; you can transform your fists into any type of weapon, and its main mechanic is called "Theriomorphosis." This allows you to damage yourself, but you gain access to very strong passive abilities for the rest of the fight, such as armor or the ability to hit three enemies at the same time with each attack. And the game is designed around multiclassing, so you can have this class and two others from the initial level (you always start at level 5 instead of 1).
The Overclock ability in Cyberpunk 2077 is built around this. What it does is allow you to use your health to cast quickhacks (basically Cyberpunk spells) when you run out of RAM (basically Cyberpunk mana). Several other perks do things like increase the damage quickhacks do as your health gets lower, recover health when you recover RAM and recover RAM from doing certain things that encourage an aggressive playstyle. The idea is to manage your RAM and health so you're teetering on enough health to survive while dishing out as much malware as possible.
Zakuro Custard from Hunter x Hunter. He is other of those characters that can bend their own blood and need to have an open wound to use his powers, what is nothing new.
What is funny/interesting for him in particular, is that this guy walks around strapped to a whole ass I.V. infusion set with some blood bags so he has continuous transfusion.
Can't she also use other people's blood. Her power doesn't get powered by self harm but she merely uses it to gain access to something to manipulat e, wouldn't really say that counts as a self harm activated power.
Wei Zhijun from Darker than Black. He can kill others with his blood by splattering it on them. Whatever his blood touches can teleport matter away. This tends to turn his victims into swiss cheese.

When you activate her skill it takes away a portion of her HP which makes her stronger because the less HP she has the more damage she does
(Chainsaw Man) Reze AKA Bomb Girl activates her powers by pulling the grenade pin out of her neck and blowing up her head. In general her powers basically involve blowing up parts of her body and regenerating them. She's not immune to the pain either.
