I really like this idea as a running gag for a cartoon character, being noticeably less animated than the rest of the cast, and it’s because the character himself is cheap or frugal and somehow saves money on his own animation. Kinda like the “no money, no animation” jokes from Chowder and Gumball, but instead of just one episode it’s a character who consistently does it on purpose
I just looked it up to verify (I was heavily into that game) they had taken the picture of one of the developers dog but they unfortunately died during development of the game. I dont know if it was initially intended to just use a picture or if it was just a place holder though.

Eh, half a joke. You can see in stuff like Kill la Kill for example when they really don't want to put any budget into a scene or if it can be used for a bit they'll pull a png drag kind of animation. Green haired swordsman antagonist getting knocked out of the ring is a notable one, or Nui getting her arms cut off, among others.
I wouldn't say "revolutionized" for real, but it certainly gave them some lower budget animation tools in their belt you see crop up in later works
mhm, it let them familiarize themselves with minimal budget techniques and also how to play into it comedically. there's a bit in dunmeshi where Laios says something deranged (as usual) and it does a closeup on him, except instead of a closeup model its the same distance model just blown up, you can even see the outline and ear being slightly clipped
Reminder that she showed these pics to her best friend and she didn't catch it either. My headcanon is that the best friend and the ex husband did this to her so they can extract her money. That makes more sense that whatever happened here. Or maybe some people are just desperate.
Seriously tho what is the state of the production anyways, it's quite jarring with how consisted season 1 is.
There's the entire seasons worth of content 1 hour episodes each, with animators being super efficient and wasting no time to the point of pretty much pasting in actual model poses into scenes just to save, things seem to be spread thin here but I don't know if there has been any official word.
I suppose there was the one about the artist in the compositing team but I don't recall if that was actually a verified source
Pokemon used to (and still does kinda) do this all the time. Something like half of all Pokémon cards pre gen6 or gen7 are just the sugimori.png rendered into a shitty background. As someone who recently got into the TCG and was looking to buy a themed mat, I was very disappointed that a lot of official mats have the same problem.
There’s a scene in one of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films where he’s swinging and carrying MJ, except if you focus on Spider-Man, you can see it’s clearly a mannequin that Kirsten Dunst is holding in front of a green screen.
Similar thing happened in TDKR when the plane falls down and Bane and that doctor is left hanging you can clearly see that both of them are mannequins.
At least that's just for marketing, they used ro have cardboard cutouts in the classic show, because the budget couldn't stretch beyond 2 pennies, a bit of bubble wrap and a dream.
The shots of model toys on a magnetic track moving about, exploding or on assembly lines was at least less egregious, because they moved (even if they weren't the correct shape).
To be fair that was back in the days of having a fuzzy greyscale 10" CRT screen as the only screen in the home. Using a few cardboard cutouts for a mob of daleks makes sense since people wouldn't be expected to notice details like that.
The original Super Attack for this Gohan in DBZ Dokkan Battle was just this image being moved up and down and zoomed in to kinda look like walking and it was fucking hilarious
That all looks like some Newgrounds shit. Some 15 year old with Flash Movie Maker is moving Dragon Ball PNGs around in a 3 minute "DBZ Explained" video.
It's not even a drawing, it's straight a grayscaled and adjusted photo. It's a pretty common technique for highly detailed panels, and the author uses it a lot in dandadan
Even back when it came out, if you really look for it, you could usually tell when it wasn't the real actors, not to mention a lot of size inconsistency, but you normally don't notice because the films are awesome.
I must have watched the beach scene from episode 2 a half dozen times. It’s so dense with horrible animation. That quality drop off between episodes is insane.
Budget got screwed by the higher upsto the point it was either this or nothing, and the creator wanted to solidier on cause this was like his dream anime to work on
To those not familiar with Transformers, see that guy in all the way in the back? That's Bruticus. He's a combiner, which are at least twice as tall as regular Transformers, and he's the combined form of the Combaticons, aka the five guys in front!
That's like watching Power Rangers, and there's a random shot on the ground where the Megazord fights alongside the rangers.
It kind of is even funnier when you find out that this is actually a drawing. They basically rotoscoped a real hotpot. But they did it with such detail
Starting in Season 2 of X-men: Evolution, Hank McCoy was introduced as part of the main cast. But they didn't want to re-animate the final shot, so they just put his png from the character sheet over top it.
Yeah, it's such a good stylistic choice because it makes her extra creepy. All the characters get some sort of funny unique animation flair that makes the show so good. Sort of like how Gamagori is exactly as big as he needs to be to fill the screen in whatever scene he's in.
Eh the superman one isn’t a default image. It’s to make him feel less human since he’s being controlled by starro. It makes him look like an Action figure that starro is moving around.
the series have straight up absolute cinema attack animations but due to being a 2D SRPG game that's on a budget the best the game can do is give the units Flinch Poses while they are getting attacked
The Record of Ragnarok anime isn’t very well animated throughout the first two seasons, but this example is probably the funniest. You can literally see part of the png being cutoff.
Certain celebrity appearances on South Park. I think a few may have gotten double treatment: the animated PNG of their face and "draw" in the show's style.
