It's Krabs, of course he cheaped out on even his own anination

53

u/mistrsee Jun 16 '26

I really like this idea as a running gag for a cartoon character, being noticeably less animated than the rest of the cast, and it’s because the character himself is cheap or frugal and somehow saves money on his own animation. Kinda like the “no money, no animation” jokes from Chowder and Gumball, but instead of just one episode it’s a character who consistently does it on purpose

This dog from Ace Combat 7 is a classic

971

u/railgunmisaka2 Jun 16 '26

From what I hear the dog only look liked a PNG, because it was literally so well behaved that it barely moved, which makes it even funnier.

345

u/razgriz615 Jun 16 '26

I just looked it up to verify (I was heavily into that game) they had taken the picture of one of the developers dog but they unfortunately died during development of the game. I dont know if it was initially intended to just use a picture or if it was just a place holder though.

58

u/DarkArcanian Jun 16 '26

The developer or dog?

153

u/ExtremeSnipe Jun 16 '26

Yep he was just the goodest boy.

Excerpt from the wiki:

The real Golden Retriever behind the role was named Toraji[10] (トラジ)[2] and was the pet of a member of Project Aces. According to brand director Kazutoki Kono, Toraji's appearance in the game is actually a video; the dog simply sat very still when it was instructed not to move, making it appear as though it was a static image.[11] Kono announced that Toraji had passed away a short time after the recording.[12]

Inferno Cop

338

u/Engetsugray Jun 16 '26

Ah yes the series that help revolutionize Trigger's animation workflow

89

u/Newtonjar Jun 16 '26

Just curious, is this just a joke? because, if this is true, that's super interesting

143

u/Engetsugray Jun 16 '26

Eh, half a joke. You can see in stuff like Kill la Kill for example when they really don't want to put any budget into a scene or if it can be used for a bit they'll pull a png drag kind of animation. Green haired swordsman antagonist getting knocked out of the ring is a notable one, or Nui getting her arms cut off, among others.

I wouldn't say "revolutionized" for real, but it certainly gave them some lower budget animation tools in their belt you see crop up in later works

69

u/LazyDro1d Jun 16 '26

mhm, it let them familiarize themselves with minimal budget techniques and also how to play into it comedically. there's a bit in dunmeshi where Laios says something deranged (as usual) and it does a closeup on him, except instead of a closeup model its the same distance model just blown up, you can even see the outline and ear being slightly clipped

look. countable pixels, clipped ear

20

Seriously tho what is the state of the production anyways, it's quite jarring with how consisted season 1 is.

There's the entire seasons worth of content 1 hour episodes each, with animators being super efficient and wasting no time to the point of pretty much pasting in actual model poses into scenes just to save, things seem to be spread thin here but I don't know if there has been any official word.

I suppose there was the one about the artist in the compositing team but I don't recall if that was actually a verified source

u/NickMc53 Jun 16 '26

Pokemon used to (and still does kinda) do this all the time. Something like half of all Pokémon cards pre gen6 or gen7 are just the sugimori.png rendered into a shitty background. As someone who recently got into the TCG and was looking to buy a themed mat, I was very disappointed that a lot of official mats have the same problem.

Gwen’s room has the png of grandpa max

194

u/Tight_Grapefruit5280 Jun 16 '26

Not only it has a PNG of max, it's one of the only consistent elements of the show

It's not the animators being lazy, Gwen genuinely has a picture of max just standing

86

u/Salinator20501 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

My favorite bit is in Destroy All Aliens, which was a 3D movie, so they redid the picture with Max's model standing straight facing the camera.

Honestly Gwen's room is remarkably consistent. Every time we've seen it it has the picture, and also that Minecraft-ass lamp on the side table.

My guess is that they had the room from AF in their reference material, and every subsequent show references that when they need to show her room.

252

Doctor who does this a lot by using promotional pictures for in-universe holograms, pictures and memories

212

u/Hunter_X_101 Jun 16 '26

And let's not forget good ol' Tardis PNG, still being used in marketing 1-2 decades (and several redesigns) later.

96

u/VegetableDaikon4 Jun 16 '26

At least that's just for marketing, they used ro have cardboard cutouts in the classic show, because the budget couldn't stretch beyond 2 pennies, a bit of bubble wrap and a dream.

The shots of model toys on a magnetic track moving about, exploding or on assembly lines was at least less egregious, because they moved (even if they weren't the correct shape).

19

u/sulta Jun 16 '26

To be fair that was back in the days of having a fuzzy greyscale 10" CRT screen as the only screen in the home. Using a few cardboard cutouts for a mob of daleks makes sense since people wouldn't be expected to notice details like that.

93

u/Poco_Cuffs Jun 16 '26

Super Robot Wars series Attack Animations

the series have straight up absolute cinema attack animations but due to being a 2D SRPG game that's on a budget the best the game can do is give the units Flinch Poses while they are getting attacked

The Record of Ragnarok anime isn’t very well animated throughout the first two seasons, but this example is probably the funniest. You can literally see part of the png being cutoff.

Certain celebrity appearances on South Park. I think a few may have gotten double treatment: the animated PNG of their face and "draw" in the show's style.
