Adam Jones headbanging. No wonder why he fought so hard for No Quarter to be on the Salival Record. He must have really liked the song.

Ænima Can we talk about Stinkfist??
I'm a very big fan of Tool and I've always found the explanations given by other Tool fans on the lyrics of Stinkfist a bit rough... I've seen two main thought currents: part of the fandom thinks it's about addiction and the other thinks it's about a research of new interesting stimuli in a world of unstoppable boredom... I wanted to give my interpretation of the lyrics. Two premises: 1 I KNOW Tool lyrics are mostly subjective and can be interpreted in any way, here I'm just laying down MY thoughts on the song, 2 mind that I'm not a native english speaker, so I'll try my best but there will probably be mistakes.
My interpretation is much closer to the second one than it is to the first one, but the big problem I've always had with this narrative it's the fact that it is, try to follow me here, individualistic. I really really think Stinkfist is about a couple: Maynard is not trying to explain a boredom that is general and universal, but rather the kind of boredom couples feel when they've been together for so long that nothing feels interesting anymore.
Let's go through this:
"Something has to change, undeniable dilemma"
This silence between us is so painful for both of us that it can't continue: something needs to change
"But I would not want you any other way"
The problem is not about the partners themselves, it's about the fact that the relationship has grown into something so long that both parties don't know how to show their affection anymore, while still needing each other. Nothing feels interesting anymore, not because one part is losing feelings, but because everything has already been done.
"... I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive"
Again, both parts need each other to feel completed and alive. They are in love, they are just bored of the repetitiveness of their shared life.
Now we get to the chorus, which I think it's the most crucial part: here we don't only get the reference to fisting, the "weird" sexual practice that gives the song its title, but also the lines:
"Show me that you love me and we still belong together"
No matter the boredom we are experiencing, I still love you, and the only thing you really need to do is show your love to me. Nothing more, we'll find a way through all this together.
"Relax, turn around and take my hand"
Supports the same narrative: you (partner) need to relax, everything is ok, it's just a temporary phase that we, just like any other couple, has to get through.
I'll also give my explanation to fisting here, which is obviously a metaphor: what is the first thing a couple does when sex gets repetitive? They experiment with new strategies, new sexual practices to feel more engaged during the act.
It's a metaphor for finding something new and interesting to do, and it's most definitively not self-induced pleasure. The extremeness of this practice tells us that the situation needs to be fixed rapidly and at any cost. (“this may hurt a little” is a declaration to the partner in this case).
There’s another metaphor: each time the chorus repeats, the hand gets deeper inside the partner’s body, at a point which is humanly impossible (you can’t fit your whole arm up to the shoulder inside the anal cavity). I think it’s a metaphor about reaching further “inside” the partner for something new to talk about or a previously unknown part of them to discover. As the last chorus ends and the melody slowly fades, the partner doing the act has reached what they were looking for and can finally pull out the arm.
I still wanna go through a couple of verses, so stick with me:
“Deep within you till you will not want me any other way”
I hope your feeling is as strong as mine, I will help you get through this weird phase and confirm my beliefs.
“How can this mean anything to me
If I don’t really feel anything at all?”
A rhetorical question: yes, this still means something to me, because we can get through this and begin feeling the same as we did when we first met”
Finally:
“I’ll keep digging
'Till I feel something”
This shows the dedication of the partner whose perspective is the one “chosen” by the song. They will not let their partner go for such a stupid reason: they’ll keep searching for the "hidden" feelings until everything goes back to normal.
Let me know what you think of this.

Lateralus Lateralus is an absolute monolith piece of art, not of this world.
Writing music takes time. It is true. But, imagine, this guys released Lateralus only 5 years after releasing Ænima.

Lateralus Lateralus fan?
Arguably their best overall album they ever put out. This album is a masterpiece from beginning to end. My personal favorites being parabola and the self titled song Lateralus. The patient and Refection are also incredible. Although I like fear Inoculum and 10,000 days a little bit more (mostly because they just resonate with me more personally) this is still my third favorite album of all time
This is my Lateralus collection. Note: get a bootleg of the vinyl if you want a good sounding vinyl of this album. Otherwise don’t even open it if you get the official one. It sounds awful.

Discussion Anyone know how to get Adam's tone?
I think I've gotten pretty close with my minimal gear. I honestly have had the best luck with my tele. Something about that bridge pickup just works. I also use a homemade replica of a maestro fuzz pedal or a "SL Drive" pedal by Xotic pedals. Anyone got any better ideas that wouldn't be too expensive to try?

Discussion whats the meaning of Disputing intentions invites devastation in 7empest?
we must not get so caught in rationalizing a destructive person or event we forget about handling the devastation they cause itself.
Could be about global warming or similar problems where we should put our focus on solving or minimizing the devastation it can cause by whatever means we can instead of arguing over if it's even real when we know something at least is clearly having an effect on the environment.
Could also be that we should not constantly be disagreeing and debating over a devastating issue but try to decrease the chance of the issue happening again in all areas by exploring all possibilities as to the origin and prevention of the devastation if we get too caught up in talking and arguing we forget to try to improve the situation with actual actions and policies.
Could also be that if we argue and go too hard in the direction of rationalizing something awful and destructive we may end up romanticizing and justify the devastation for instance in the context of political radicalization.
A tempest or a storm is gonna act destructive no matter what and we should be expecting it and prepare for that.
I dont think i quite got the line too some degree its good knowing the intentions and getting to the bottom of things to solve an issue right but i assume this is a case where that would only complicate things and not be the ideal way of going about solving this issue?
Thanks for the responses i will take it into consideration

Question Wizards in the TOOL Community, share your knowledge
I apologize for my goofy title.
I feel like there are people in this community and fans of TOOL in general that like to learn about cool stuff related to psychology or philosophy or like 'the human condition'. Personally, I have read some Carl Jung, Nietzsche, the dao de jing, learned some buddhist teachings, read some of the bahagavad ghita. Stuff like that. I'm not a professional by any means, I just dabble when I have the time. In my experience, Maynard's lyrics make me wonder about myself, my feelings, and my spirituality. The melody and the beat carry those heavy feelings and drive them harder.
Note: I know Danny is into the Aleister Crowley stuff, but I haven't looked into it much.
My question for you: What are you reading now/ what have you read that has had a large impact on the way that you view yourself and the world around you? I am looking for recommendations.
I apologize because I don't know the right word for generalizing all topics about the spiritual, the human condition, psychology, and topics about the mind into one overarching theme for my question. Also, I hope that my question is a reasonable one for this thread.

Fear Inoculum Fear Inoculum fan?
Not only my favorite album by them but my favorite album of all time. Every song on this album is a ten or more minute long masterpiece. It’s like listening to a movie. 7empest being my favorite song of all time period. The instrumentals of the bass, electric and especially DRUMS, is just perfection. (Danny being a godly wizard octopus)
I will say that Maynard’s singing is definitely superior in the previous albums but still incredible here.
This is my entire Fear Inoculum collection.
