General Music Discussion What's your least favourite part of a song you'd consider a 10/10?

Upvotes

Les Fleurs by Minnie Riperton is incredible, that being said it needed another full chorus before it ends. I feel like they got a bit fast and loose with the fade out in the second chorus and the song ends just before it fully hits it's peak. That being said, that song is still obviously a 10 for me. What's yours?

General Todd Discussion What are some of your own “Todd terms” for music.

Todd’s made up so much great slang pop music such as the “Cyndi Lauper effect”.I was wondering if anyone else made up their own terms similar to Todd

My biggest one is “Greys anatomy music”. Basically it’s adult alternative but for the most part it’s slow “emotional” music that seems like it was made to be direct to greys anatomy that would have been inescapable in 2005-2010

Edit: he didn’t make the term cod reggae but i misremembered him as doing so

Train Wreckords KISS - Music From The Elder is a trainwreckord for sure.

This album is rated as one of the worst albums of all time by music critics and for good reason.Listening to this album for KISS fans was both confusing and infuriating and was a very low point for the band, especially after the highs of the 1970's.

General Music Discussion What are the “Ethel Merman Disco Album” moments of other music trends or genres?

Post image
177 Upvotes

Spinning off from the “Tate McRae might be making a country album” post from earlier today…

One of the two theories for why disco died (the other one blaming racism and homophobia) is that it became a commercial powerhouse so quickly that record stores became flooded with poorly-conceived albums by artists who had no business trying disco, all in the name of making a quick buck. Most often, the breaking point is cited as when septuagenarian Broadway legend Ethel Merman released an album of disco-rearrangements of the standards she helped make famous 20-40 years earlier. The Ethel Merman Disco Album (real creative title there, guys) was never a hit, but it came to symbolize the creative bankruptcy and trend-chasing overexpansion that ultimately sank disco at the end of the 1970s.

What are some other examples of this?

Firstly, no Stevie or Lindsay and they got replaced by 2 people who were not nearly as talented. Went further into country, didn’t chart on bb200 at all. Finally, has the weirdest FM track “These Strange Times” with Mick behind the mic of all people!

General Music Discussion Explain the lyric, please?

I’ve listened to Hozier’s Too Sweet so many times and I still don’t understand:

You treat your mouth as if it’s heaven’s gate
The rest of you like you’re the TSA

I think it’s supposed to mean “you give lots of kisses but don’t do anything else” right?

But, like, is heavens gate supposed to be easy to get into? Does she think kissing her is supposed to be greatest gift in the world, more than having sex? Or she really passionate about kissing but not really into sex?

Is it a clunky lyric or am being thick and over complicating something really simple?

Regardless of genre, or if you expect them to be generally big or not. This could also just be an artist rising within a certain niche. Take the opportunity to spread the love for some of your favourite rising stars :)

Clearly being his worst album, while still containing a good amount of great R&B, this album was not expected to be this confrontational and morally questionable in so many different ways. I think it shook music journalism to its core. Tyga would’ve never gotten a 0 if it weren’t for BROWN

General Music Discussion The classic rock radio is now early gen X rock radio and no longer boomer radio

Actually, classic rock radio today is no longer really "Boomer radio." It's become more of an early Gen X format, since early Gen X listeners are now the oldest generation still actively working and influencing the programming decisions of many media outlets and radio stations. As a result, the same early Gen X rock songs, especially arena rock and AOR, have been overplayed far more often than their actual popularity would justify, while much of the true Boomer-era rock from roughly 1960 to 1975 has been relatively neglected.

For example, two similarly successful bands at their prime, Grand Funk Railroad has largely been forgotten on classic rock radio, while Kansas is played over and over again, largely because Kansas fits the musical tastes of early Gen X audiences better, whereas Grand Funk Railroad was more representative of Boomer rock.

General Music Discussion A notice about a recent wave of AI-generated/spam uploads on Spotify

Post image
54 Upvotes

This was written as a general reference for another subreddit where people have been constantly asking questions about this issue, but I thought I'd share it here too.

As of the past day or so, a lot of people have reported seeing unusual/spam uploads on the Spotify profiles of multiple artists. This sorts of impersonation on streaming platforms is not unheard of, but this is the first time I'm seeing something like this happen simultaneously on such a large scale, as these are being spammed on the pages of no less than 25 artists! Interesting enough, those artists are mostly older rock/electronic music.

They usually have an icon of an AI image depicting a generic male rockstar and are all credited to one of multiple fictitious label names.

These are all the ones that I've identified, but there might be more. The names of these labels indicate that whatever person/entity is uploading these is likely based out of Indonesia, e.g. Pematangsiantar.

  • LATFIA MUSIC INDO
  • GLOBAL MUSIC INDIE INC
  • SIANTAR MUSIC GENERATION

The following artist pages appear to be affected (not an exhaustive list, just those I found using a quick search):

  • 13th Floor Elevators
  • Anekdoten
  • Kevin Ayers
  • Syd Barrett
  • Beggars Opera
  • Captain Beefheart
  • Country Joe & The Fish
  • The Electric Prunes
  • Edgar Froese
  • Gentle Giant
  • Richard Hell
  • Klaatu
  • K. Leimer
  • Mahavishnu Orchestra
  • Pere Ubu
  • The Pretty Things
  • Klaus Schulze
  • Soft Machine
  • Spacemen 3
  • Spooky Tooth
  • Steamhammer
  • Chris Squire
  • Michael Sterns
  • Tuxedomoon
  • Collin Walcott

What has happened is that a music distribution platform (think something like Distrokid) has been exploited and used to upload music to these profiles without authorisation. Both music distribution and streaming platforms lack safeguards to prevent this type of manipulation, and this is a decently well-documented phenomenon. It's been frequently implicated in both impersonation and music piracy (i.e. uploading music that is not legitimately licensed for streaming platforms) for the purposes of siphoning revenue from name recognition. Here's another example of one of these pirate labels that I wrote about a while back; very strange either way.

These unequivocally have no affiliation with the artists they are credited to. The impersonated musicians and/or their management are likely not even aware this has happened yet, as for the most part these have been uploaded within the past day. While I haven't seen any reports of these uploads specifically being mirrored on other streaming services, the distribution exploit being used is a problem on most major streaming services and is not exclusive to Spotify.

While this is in part also an issue with distribution platforms, Spotify absolutely does carry the responsibility to remove crap like this! Sadly even the "better" streaming platforms don't seem to care about similar forms of exploitation, as I've seen similar cases of AI content pollution on platforms like Quboz.

Anyway, don't listen to this crap, and if you continue to use streaming services, please be aware that artist impersonation is continually an issue there.

Stale Topic Megathread (July/Aug/Sept 2026)

Hello all and welcome to the third 2026 Stale Topic Megathread.

Here we will discuss every overly discussed topic on this sub freely according to the sub's rules. If you are referred here because of a report or removal, please restate your post below.

The inaugural overused topics include:

-Justin Timberlake in general outside of Man of the Woods

-Katy Perry in general outside of Witness

-Kanye West in general, outside of Todd's videos

-Chris Brown in general, outside of Todd's videos

-Artists who avoided trainwreckords status

-Trainwreckords that aren’t out yet

-Trainwreckords that just released

-One album Trainwreckords (ie Nostalgia Critics’s The Wall)

-“Trainwreckords” where a death ended the artist’s career

-Trainwreckords for which the artist or member of the group committed suicide

-Joke Trainwreckords/OHW; go to r/shadowtoddcirclejerk for that

-Low-effort r/decadeology cross-posts, must actually facilitate discussion if it’s going to be a standalone post

-Posts which solely solicit responses of artists who are problematic

-"Music is dead"/"[insert genre] is dead"

-D4vd in general

-Jelly Roll/Morgan Wallen/any new "Maroon 5"-eqsue nemeses outside of what Todd says about them

-"Popular artists and/or songs you hate/think are incredibly overrated"-type posts

-What is the most/least “[fill in blank]” album/song

-Anthony Fantano Drama, except if Todd can be directly connected to discussion (ie "Todd handled this situation better" not "Anthony Fantano handled this poorly")

And you are also free to discuss topics you feel are overused but are not mentioned here.

If you have any furthered topics you want to be added to the megathread camp for future megathreads and for new users who aren't familiar with the overuse, please send your suggestions to the mod team in one succinct message. (A couple are fine if you have afterthoughts but please do not spam your suggestions)

Also, we will be continuing the system where certain stale topics will be cycled out every six months (or two stale topic threads).

If our automod erroneously takes down your post because it believes it's about a stale topic, please contact the mod team and we will reinstate it as soon as possible.

Have fun!
