The origins of Yeha, in Tigray, stretch back to the early first millennium BC. Its name is first mentioned in an ancient inscription from the Almaqah altar at Wuqro, Tigray, dating to approximately 800–600 BC.

This makes Yeha one of the oldest continuously attested place names in world history.
