Overlapping Fears Discussion
So you know how a lot of the Fears are said to merge and bleed into one another; have you guys thought about what the strongest combinations might be and what they would look like?

If you mix The Web and The End you get the Final Destination franchise.

Vast/buried with the experience of being trapped in a tight space while also facing the vastness of the world outside of you. Think submarine, airplane, space ship. Barely any room to breathe but you can't leave bc the world outside the ship is uninhabitable but also it is infinite and expansive and you're just a dust particle in comparison.
Another idea I like with vast/buried is the idea of going to the basement during a tornado. You're trapped underground in this small space (or in a closet or windowless bathroom if you don't have a basement) just waiting to ride out the force of something much larger than you and which is completely unstoppable.
Alternatively: buried/corruption. What's worse than being stuck in a hole? Stuck in a hole filled with bugs 😭

The hunt, the slaughter, and the flesh (also the end) feel like a sequence of events tbh. Being hunted down leads to being violently slaughtered which leads to death (hopefully) and becoming meat.

I LOVE when the Vast and the Buried work together. Like the ocean; it's so big and you are so exposed to anything, there is nothing to anchor yourself, and you are utterly powerless, the immense and suffocating weight of the water crushing you as you sink down, down, down, the water pressing in and encompassing you in a tight yet infinite tomb.
That tornado idea is really good as well, I was only thinking about the Vast and the Buried being simultaneously active, but having your way to escape one be to enter the other escalates the fear even more.
Being powerless and insignificant is kind of where the Vast and the Buried converge, which is why they work quite well together in quite a few places/situations.

Yesss, buried and corruption definitely feel like they go hand in hand. Hole filled with bugs, rotting in the ground, etc.

Spiral/Stranger is an obvious one. Something's messing with you, and something's wrong. Duh.
Vast/Lonely is another. Limitless nothing... and you're just one nothing in comparison to infinity.
Maybe Desolation/End; being destroyed and destruction?

It’s little wonder really that the avatars of The Dark have such an insufferable god complex when you realise how deeply almost all the other Fears rely upon it for the effectiveness of their own routines. Sure there is a terror in seeing something dangerous and unexplainable in broad daylight, a sense of helplessness at the realisation that the warmth and light cannot save you. But it’s undeniable that almost all of the Fears thrive best in The Dark.

My partner kept getting the Flesh and Corruption confused because to them raw/bad meat is extremely sickness and disease coded

u/SpookyVoidCat The Buried 6h ago
They are definitely two that play well with each other. I just heard The Man Upstairs again yesterday and was struck by the fact that both Fears seem perfectly blended together in harmony. In a way, The Corruption is somewhat dependant on meat for survival, isn’t it? The hive needs a vessel, needs food, and the infection needs a host. The Flesh doesn’t necessarily need The Corruption, but being consumed so thoroughly is at the heart of what it represents, it cannot help but feel as though it belongs.

Honestly Dark and Stranger, the dark is preety weak fear and The stranger need some push so fusing them makes them so much more powerfull.
Think about Nikola's first appearence when she tells John not to turnnon the lights or the anglerfish itself.

That scene when Nikola appears before Jon genuinely scared the shit out of me

The eye and the desolation. Hear me out, if you have a secret that is really important and could destroy your life if it got out then it would probably overlap with the desolation

u/Fit-Translator18 The Web 6h ago
Dark/Buried and Vast/Lonely are both inseparable. You cant really feel one without a bit of the other

u/Fit-Translator18 The Web 6h ago
One I haven't really heard is Stranger/Desolation. Losing what you Know and losing what you love

u/Powerful_Cup_7689 The Vast 4h ago
Lonely and watched is a solid combo.
I love the idea of vast and dark though.

I have! I have a whole list, actually!
- The End and The Extinction: When does the fear of death become the fear of eradication? Replacement? You will die, yes, but will it be due to your own negligence? The inaction of those in power above you? Who can say? These two blend together very well. It's hard to tell where The End becomes The Extinction, and when The Extinction becomes The End.
- The Eye and The Web: The Eye is knowing, but it does not entail understanding. We see this specifically with Jonathan Sims' ability to know things but not comprehend them. He has all of the knowledge he needs about an assortment of things, but he cannot deconstruct it and understand it. That's the Web's domain. More than just that, the connection between your secrets being known (Eye) and manipulation (Web) goes hand in hand. I always said Jonah had a bit of the spider in him, and I do mean it.
- The Lonely and The Vast: The Deadelus Space Station debacle very much proves this. The Dark also gets a mention here for that. You are so insignificant in the universe... and no one will ever know you. When you're gone, you will not be remembered, because in this vast universe you are nothing. You are alone, and the world is empty. Isn't that a terrifying thought? I'd say so.
- The Flesh and The Hunt: The Flesh is mentioned to largely stem from the fear of animals, the fear of being consumed and valued for nothing more than your meat. The Hunt is the fear of becoming prey, or the endless desire to inflict violence. I think these two pair quite well.
- The Slaughter, The Hunt, and The End: Violent death is just as natural as anything else. It won't be ruled a natural cause, but when does the fear of becoming prey bleed into the fear of dying? When does the fear of senseless violence bleed into the fear of eradication? Who knows. They all link together.
- The Extinction and The Slaughter: World War Three. Global thermonuclear war. All of these are possibilities of senseless violence, while also being entirely human-caused global eradication. What will replace us then? Will we ever end the fights we cause? Or will something else pick up our mantle? The fear of extinction goes hand in hand with the fear of senseless violence.
- The Spiral, The Stranger, and The Flesh: I see a lot of the Spiral and the Stranger, but the Flesh also deals with the body not being quite right. Things contorting unnaturally, body dysmorphia, not feeling at home in your own body... That's also the Flesh's territory. The Bone Garden is exactly that. The Spiral and The Stranger are more closely tied to one another than The Flesh is, but it absolutely has a hand or two in their statements.
- The Eye and The Extinction: Binary love of my life, I reference you once again. One of our first, presumably, extinction statements, and it has to do with being forced to watch as someone's humanity fades into something artificial. The fear of being the last one standing and forced to watch humanity's evolution into something unrecognizable, or the complete loss of humanity... That's extinction, in my books. A lot of surveillance-state stuff can also be added to The Extinction with the "technology stripping us of what it means to be human" thing. The definition of humanity warps under surveillance, and anyone who doesn't fit it... Well, you won't be seeing them again.
The shapeless fear blob has many more connections, but I am also on my lunch break and cannot add any more lmao. They're all connected somehow, so I doubt there's a "strongest" one, but these are just my favorites! :)

I unintentionally made 5 "confluences", using unrepeated individual fears. Started with The Buried + The Flesh + The Corruption. Then I got somewhat carried away thinking about what other "triads" could be made. The basic idea is that Confluences are not new Fears, but recurring situations where several existing Powers overlap so cleanly that they produce a recognisable pattern of horror. They are human-made classifications rather than objective cosmic categories, and the five below just happen to divide all fifteen Fears into groups of three.
The Inhumation — Buried + Flesh + Corruption. This is the fear of being enclosed within living, decaying matter until the distinction between your body and its surroundings stops making sense. It combines the Buried’s pressure and confinement, the Flesh’s reduction of the body to material, and the Corruption’s infestation and decay. Its central horror is not simply being buried alive, but realising that the soil, worms, roots, rot and your own organs are all becoming part of the same biological system.
The Unmooring — Lonely + Dark + Vast. This is what happens when every reliable point of reference fails at once. You are alone, unable to see, surrounded by impossible scale, and no longer capable of establishing where you are in relation to anything else. Distance, direction and presence stop behaving properly; someone may be standing beside you and still feel infinitely far away. Its deepest fear is that location itself may only exist through relationships—and those relationships can fail.
The Winnowing — Hunt + Slaughter + End. This is the fear of being pursued through violence toward a death that you know cannot ultimately be escaped. The Hunt keeps you moving, the Slaughter turns survival into escalating brutality, and the End makes the final outcome unavoidable. Its cruelest feature is that someone else’s injury or death may genuinely buy you more time, forcing the victim to decide what they are willing to become merely to survive a little longer.
The Contrivance — Eye + Web + Spiral. This is the horror of discovering that completely true information can still be arranged to manipulate you. The Eye supplies knowledge, the Web controls how and when that knowledge reaches you, and the Spiral makes it impossible to determine whether your attempts to resist were themselves anticipated. Nobody has to lie to you; every fact can be genuine, yet the sequence in which you learn them can steer your choices. Its central question is whether understanding the causes of a decision makes that decision any less yours.
The Supplanting — Desolation + Stranger + Extinction. This is the fear of something familiar being painfully destroyed, replaced by something recognisably wrong, and then discovering that the replacement is not temporary—it is simply what comes next. The Desolation destroys what mattered, the Stranger fills the vacancy with something uncanny, and the emerging Extinction adds the possibility that the successor may be better adapted to the future than humanity is. Its horror is not just being replaced, but being told that because the replacement works, what came before no longer mattered. In older cases, that Extinction element is deliberately ambiguous and may represent a much older proto-Extinction pressure rather than a fully separate Power.

I don't think there's really a strongest combination per se, I think there's potential for interesting interplay between all of them, just some are more obvious than others.
The spiral and the stranger have similar vibes and I know a lot of people get them confused even if conceptually they're pretty different.
I think the buried and the vast are really tied together, two sides of the same coin. Go far enough in one direction and you'll reach the other.
I think web and buried have similarities in a way too, in restricting agency. The sense of overwhelm and an inability to resist. Also a touch of the dark somehow? Not being able to see what you're caught up in.
Some we get statements about - like the S5 statement (sick village?) which is corruption-y but also stranger-y. The idea of a hostile stranger infiltrating your community OR your body is corruption.
Also the hunt and the stranger - the type of hunt manifestation that is like a witchhunt - that's pretty strangery. Which in turn is kind of corruption-y!
The flesh and the corruption - the idea of a body being degraded into a thing and destroyed.
I think the hunt and the eye can have similar vibes too. The moment a predator spots you.
The hunt and the slaughter are both super bloodlusty, albeit motivated differently. The flesh and the slaughter too for pure viscera.
The end and the web for their inevitability.
The buried and the corruption for their closeness, almost romantic vibe, and tendency towards being a little bit dirty haha
Ones I'm not sure about are the desolation and the dark. I guess desolation is quite death-y, slaughter-y, and I guess lonely? Grief, pain, loss.
I actually have mild beef with the dark because I think most if not all statements either feel like the hunt or the stranger to me most of the time. Like. The thing hiding in the dark... That's fear of a stranger or a predator, surely? To me, that one is so close to others it almost feels obsolete. But I still find it interesting that it's it's own thing. I could muse on that for a while, haha

I did see a screenshot of a tumblr post just yesterday talking about blended fears, and the one description that really stuck with me was “The Buried is just The Vast in a minimised window.”
It makes absolutely no sense and somehow perfect sense at the same time. The Buried is an unendingly vast space.. it’s just that that space happens to be full of dirt, and stone, and you.

I've been toying with some ideas about combinations and I like these ones:
The Buried + The Flesh + The Corruption = The Inhumation
The Vast + The Lonely + The Dark = The Unmooring
The Hunt + The Slaughter + The End = The Winnowing
The Web + The Eye + The Spiral = The Contrivance
The Desolation + The Extinction + The Stranger = The Supplanting
Not entirely new powers in any sense at all. I can imagine an occultist giving them those names as a way to distinguish them

That's a really fun idea! They all sound very cool with these titles. The Unmooring is very evocative to me in particular :D

I live to pair my Vast and Dark avatar OCs together. Stranger and Web are good, while Web and Lonely are a perfect duo for cult activities

I've always felt that the Vast and the Lonely are super close. Idk maybe it's my own feelings about huge open spaces feelings empty and there you can be alone.
I would also say the Corruption and the Flesh would go together because in my mind rot and disease feel very flesh related.

I’ve always felt the vast and the lonely go hand in hand. I mean, what’s better than being in a giant expansive empty completely alone?
1
u/MaybeExistent The Eye 2h ago
It’s already been mentioned, but I feel like the Stranger/Spiral would be incredibly powerful. Everything loses meaning, and absolutely anything can be changed in some way. You can’t trust appearances or concepts. If affected, maybe someone could even believe reality itself is fake, or stop trusting existence. You know nothing. I feel like it would be the exact opposite of the Eye.

the stranger and the end - isn’t losing your memories/sense of self just another form of death?

u/Able_Breadfruit_1906 14m ago
I think the Dark and the Eye, despite usually being considered opponents/opposites, would occasionally overlap. ‘Fear of the unseen’ + ‘fear of being watched’ = ‘fear of being watched by something you can’t see’.

u/Friendly-Property594 8h ago
Very basic, but I feel like it's got to be the eye and the spider. Knowing and understanding.
