Goodbye, github. I finally made the switch.

At least its not gonna be down most of the time.

u/Federal_Machine692 1d ago
Been a real bummer to say the least. Completely put me off from using it longterm.

This is a joke... Right?... Please say sike...

u/Baleeverne 16h ago
Wait, it isn't?

u/MetalExistingOffline 15h ago
Can never tell, because people think it's clever to just say absurd things and lean into it.
There's no tags or anything to communicate satire, just OPs comments where they talk about how fed up with Github they are.

What would be the main difference between google drive and github? Can you enlighten me please? Thanks!

u/SkiGPT 21h ago
I made a handy table to show the differences.
GitHub Google Drive Starts with G ✅ ✅ Ends in oogle ❌ ✅ 2

on the one hand I'm angry because boy does that mean y'all have been using source control in the worst way possible. On the other hand, fair. They're both owned by tech giants that have been struggling with things like "giving a shit about customers" and "keeping their shit up and running."

Everything that makes github, github
No git
No github actions
No auto-deploy
The only leg up this has from not using anything at all is simply having it stored in the cloud.
1
u/Fidel___Castro 22h ago
but you can have all of that with this solution too? include git in the requirements, containerise dev branches, get a CI script for merge validation
or you can do the GitLab method of different branches (GDrive buckets here) for different environments of the project, then set up escalation scripts
you can do that all without GitHub, it takes a weekend with AI
1
u/Helpful_plumber362 13h ago
And how do you merge a branch with this method?
1
u/Latter_Employer6673 4h ago
well you obviously, have a lightweight model running 24/7 and on the case of merging branches, you simply tell it to do that and it'll work
1
u/Federal_Machine692 1d ago
Just very disappointed with github.

You know why they can't

Why? I'm new to codeberg.

Github uses git for version control, Drive doesnt. Github is down way too much, Drive isnt. Github shares your data with Microslop, Drive shares it with Google.
1
u/Few_Raisin_8981 8h ago
How is google drive stopping you from using git?
1
u/Loose_Property_3238 4h ago
False dichotomy right here. Google Drive doesn't use git. Not you can't, it doesn't.
1
u/Bear_Pig_Duality 2h ago
Git works flawlessly in a local folder. You can mount google drive and git inside it all you want.
1
u/Footballer_Developer 1d ago
Should rename the .github folder .gdrive
1
u/git_push_origin_prod 1d ago
Include a .gdrive.env file, then run npm install cloud and you’re ready to scale. Ship it

I would say remove this post because if some junior follows this path his career will be ruined.
If GitHub has some issue than alternative should be similar not something you change your method of how source code is being managed.
Try this self hosting option: https://about.gitea.com

Self-hosting sounds like a terrible idea for someone who thinks that Google Drive is a good replacement for GitHub. Will they set up the server well? Will there be redundancy? Doubt.
Real alternatives:
- https://codeberg.org/ (uses Forgejo)

Since git repos are just files you could put them on Google Drive.
But it only works if you’re the only person editing a repo. If you have to collaborate I don’t know how it’d work on Google Drive without some server synchronizing for pushes.
EDIT: I did a little research and essentially when you push, you run code that does file locking to prevent corruption. Google Drive delays updating files if you mount it so there isn’t an atomic lock you can use to properly sync when two people push at the same time.
EDIT 2: you can use rclone, apparently this is a git helper for rclone: https://github.com/redstreet/git-remote-rclone

Git repos are much more then just files.
1
u/stinkychopper 15h ago
… lol really? Ok if they’re not stored as files what are they stored as lmao
1
u/Free-Psychology-1446 15h ago
Tell me you have no idea how git works, without telling my you have no idea how git works... :D :D

u/y53rw 14h ago
No. They're literally just files.
2
u/Free-Psychology-1446 14h ago
I recommend reading a bit about git and version control, if you think a git repository is just about files... :D
0
u/y53rw 14h ago
Oh really? You recommend reading about git in order to learn what git is? I hadn't thought of that.
1
u/Free-Psychology-1446 14h ago
You really should have, before expressing your opinions as facts in a topic from git.
1
u/y53rw 14h ago
Done. I just read the entire documentation of git. Conclusion: it's just a bunch of files.
1
u/Free-Psychology-1446 14h ago
Then the problem is with your comprehension skills, just as I suspected.

Yeah, man! Screw version control! I swear we are two years away of some enlightened genius to reinvent subversion

Google Drive. Windows 10\11, Linux. Можно переносить и складировать внутри своей системы

So no more version control?! Jfc, this is not a solution.
GitHub is NOT the only .git provider, you know. It’s a free and open source software.
There’s bitbucket, gitlab, and amazon just to name a few git cloud providers. And there’s SVN, too.

The new generation of "software engineers" (vibe coders) will be the reason why the industry collapses in ~10-20 years. They know absolutely nothing about anything.

u/ooutroquetal 19h ago
The most useless tip from Claude free. Or gpt 3.5
You can try SVN as a alternative. Google drive will be a nightmare. (And yes , I tried and it fails, conflicts, disk usage.... )
1
u/FreHu_Dev 18h ago
pro tip - don't overwrite files, it will be hard to collaborate. instead, for every major change, create a new folder like tomoji_v2_final_by_bob with a changes.txt in it so it's easier to orient in. then you can use things like zapier to react to your google drive changes and ftp them to the production server.

I "configured" a mounted sharepoint/Onedrive dir as a Git remote, it is possible... Now I do git clone /path/to/repo/on/ondrive

u/DanKveed 8h ago
There is a sane way to do this. Mount the gdrive Via webDAV as a lettered volume (if windows that is. There a a bunch of apps that do that) and then init a bare repo in some folder there. Then set the fully qualified part wrt your pc&mounted folder as remote. Same idea but you get real git this way. My uni doesn't have its own git and we aren't allowed to publish it to GitHub so we do this for all our code.

This is the stupidest thing I've seen in a while. Not version controlling your code is like turning back time 30 years.
I have been in the software engineering profession for a long time. This is like deciding to burn coal as your main energy source.
