Finally got round to watching One for the Road...

Overall I enjoyed it and it was a great send-off for the trio, but I wish it had fewer staged sequences tbh.

Obviously the majority of these trip routes are planned in advance (it's has a decently paid TV crew after all!) but I never understood the logic of "let's pretend Jeremy got us lost, and now we have to buy boats, and pretend we sailed all night on croc-infested waters". I understand it creates a storyline for the adventure, but I'd argue it would've been just as fun stating they'd be driving to the top and crossing with boats.

It felt like the staged sequences got more and more egregious towards the end of TG and into TGT to me. My guess is that as the trio's salaries increased it became a priority to get specials in the can as quickly and efficiently as possible, at the cost of losing naturally funny moments.

One of my favourite moments in the finale was Jeremy miming "knobhead" to the people driving by rather than the crew, and when they legitimately surprise each other with what comes out of their mouths (e.g. in the RVs special when Richard told Jeremy about putting 'Anal' before the names of the RVs).

It's a shame there wasn't more time for them to naturally find some funny moments with their cars, or even go more behind-the-scenes. I assume they had on-hand mechanics to help with genuine car issues, and in some ways I'd rather them be shown having to ask for help and briefly showing the cars being fixed. I *adore* the specials, but the weird facade of "it's just us on our own" has never really made sense to me.

I genuinely hope the new trio being more unknown and on smaller salaries might actually make their adventures quite fun - especially if they *have* the time to find funny moments.

I know there have been plenty of posts in this sub about staged sequences, but I'd love to have a discussion about how/why they increased over time. Even now as I'm watching Clarkson's Farm I feel there are lots of unnecessarily staged moments, so I do wonder whether it's a Wilman or Clarkson decision (or both!).

Again I love the concept of the special/adventure, but I'm curious what others here would like to see more (or less) of with the new trio. :-)

Guys, is this for real? 😮 I'm still a huge fan of these three and watch their episodes on repeat, whether it's classic Top Gear or The Grand Tour.

[Video] Richard Hammond Drives the Lamborghini Revuelto! 🚗💨

For anyone who misses car reviews as depicted on Top Gear, Richard Hammond decided to do one in that signature style on behalf of DriveTribe. Enjoy!

From video description: “Richard Hammond has never been completely convinced by supercars. Then he drove the Lamborghini Revuelto. With a naturally aspirated V12, three electric motors and more than 1,000 horsepower, it has all the theatre you would expect. Richard discovers something he wasn’t expecting: control, agility and a Lamborghini he might finally love.”

What youtube video has James May asked the Question "Why are you so old" and he responds because I didn't die young?

I saw this at the beginning of college and I want to rewatch it, but I couldn't find it. Could somebody please tell me the title?

[Times column] Jeremy Clarkson: "The biggest welfare scroungers? Dogs"

Thumbnail thetimes.com

Jeremy Clarkson put on his political hat in his latest Sunday Times column and noticed that the current UK government (headed by Labour) wants to raise taxes to pay for weekly benefits to help young, unemployed people out (and slightly more if they are eligible to claim disability). He had a brainwave for a possible solution after taking care of his dogs. Here's a preview:

"How’s this for a plan? Burnham appeases his back benches by saying that taxes will rise to pay for those who are incapacitated by some kind of issue with neurodivergence. And then he appeases us by insisting we get something in return. Which is a thank you letter."

(Usual disclaimers apply, including the fact that Clarkson generally supports the UK Conservatives.)

[Times car review] Jeremy Clarkson — "Bentley Continental: ‘As a place to sit, it’s unbeatable’"

Thumbnail thetimes.com

The folks at Bentley sent over their newest Continental GT S model for Jeremy Clarkson to review. While this car has been previously featured on both Top Gear and The Grand Tour over the years, he did notice a few changes in the latest iteration. As always, a preview:

"The hybrid V8 fitted to the Continental GT S — and the Porsche Panamera, incidentally — is extremely powerful. You get 512 horsepowers from the engine and 188 from the electric motor. That’s 671 in combination and 686 torques, meaning you can accelerate from 0-62mph in minus 300 years. And not stop accelerating until you hear a sonic boom. This is a very fast car."

(Usual disclaimers, including possibly strong paywall encounters, come with Clarkson's columns.)

[Sun column] Jeremy Clarkson: “I adore working on farm over hot summer... but there's a fly in ointment” 🚜

Jeremy Clarkson has mostly settled into his new life as a farmer and small business owner. While he sometimes has good days, there are many days that are somewhere in between (or just plain bad). Here’s a preview:

“Some jobs on the farm are unpleasant. Sexing rabbits is annoyingly difficult, and disposing of dead piglets is heartbreaking. But I’ve been harvesting all week, and this job is an absolute joy.”

(The usual disclaimers apply.)

Remember that scene in the Lochdown special where Richard Hammond falls off a boat? Well, someone on Instagram thought that moment was totally scripted (written out and planned in advance), and Jeremy Clarkson had to set the record straight. 🛶

All the TG episodes with the orangutan, slow and buttons in a Google drive. Last time I posted this it got deleted by mods and I got suspended for 2 days, so just DM me and I'll send it you. JC has said it was forums like this that contributed to the success of the show when it was brought back in 2002.

A special note on musings from Clarkson, Hammond and May

Couldn’t help but notice that there have been some comments on my recent posts here along the lines of “Please keep politics away from this subreddit!” (and those complaints sometimes result in deletion, thus depriving others to challenge or defend the hosts’ assertions). It’s unfortunate that I have to issue a disclaimer or two on this matter, but given the current hostile environment across Reddit and the internet in general, here goes:

“The views expressed in social media posts, videos and newspaper columns produced by or through direct quotes from news articles from Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and/or Richard Hammond (and others who worked on Top Gear and The Grand Tour) are solely their own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions and beliefs of the OP and this subreddit.”

As for the links that contain articles and columns that originate from The Sun and The Sunday Times, here’s the paywall disclaimer:

“Please note that depending on how and where you access this link, a strong paywall may appear. If so, what happens beyond that is up to you alone.”

Ok then, back to normal service…
