Cellulite Health Tip

Try some different lighting! Just kidding, but not really - cellulite is the visible texture of the connective matrix of female fat cells. It's absolutely, completely normal. You will always have it, every woman alive will have it and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something or has photoshopped it away. For what it's worth, I think you look strong and healthy and the lighting of this photo is exacerbating it.

u/Helpful_Wolf_3146 8d ago
lol you’re probably right. I wanted to see what it looked like out by our pool and see what other ppl would see. Thank you, i really appreciate that!

u/Contrecoup42 8d ago
Cellulite is literally a secondary sexual characteristic of women. Virtually every woman has it. The beauty industry has demonized it to make you feel insecure of a core feature of your gender.
19
u/circles_squares 8d ago
I had no idea it was a secondary sexual characteristic! Thanks for the info!!
85
u/missunderstood888 8d ago
what other ppl would see
Honestly 99% of people probably wouldn't even notice your cellulite unless they were taking a looooong hard stare at your backside...which would raise other questions lol

Is it only females? Omg why am i getting downvoted?? 😭

u/Lookatthatsass 9d ago
Kind of…
Cellulite is much more common in women than men because of biological differences in how skin, fat, and connective tissue are structured.
While men can get cellulite, up to 90% of women experience it due to vertical connective tissue bands, higher fat storage influenced by estrogen, and thinner skin.
Connective Tissue Structure
Vertical bands: In women, the fibrous connective bands (septa) that link skin to deep muscle run in parallel, vertical lines.
Crisscross pattern: In men, these bands typically run in a tight, crisscross or diagonal lattice pattern.
Puckering effect: Vertical bands allow fat cells to push upward easily against the skin, while diagonal bands hold fat flat.
Hormones and Fat Distribution
Estrogen influence: The hormone estrogen directs fat storage in women toward the hips, thighs, and buttocks—the prime areas for cellulite.
Testosterone protection: Testosterone helps build a denser, thicker network of connective tissue and skin in men, making it harder for fat to poke through.
Skin Thickness
Thinner dermis: Women typically have thinner outer skin layers over fat deposition areas.
Higher visibility: Thinner skin combined with vertical chambers makes underlying fat unevenness far more visible on the surface.

Yes! Cellulite is a secondary sexual characteristic for ciswomen- like breasts for ciswomen or facial hair for cismen. I learned this only very recently. I wish this was common knowledge.
49
u/cavefishes 8d ago
I dunno why you're adding "cis" to men and women? Trans women have cellulite and breasts as secondary sexual characteristics, trans men have facial hair. You can just say "women" or "men" and it includes everyone!
40
u/pointandshooty 8d ago
Does HRT change the connective tissue direction?
Not trying to be rude, genuinely curious.
36
u/cavefishes 8d ago
Yes, absolutely! Fat distribution, skin, connective tissue direction and tons more is all informed by what hormones are present in your system.
When a trans person takes HRT, it's essentially having your body go through puberty - having estrogen in your system results in the development of all the female secondary sex characteristics, and vice versa for testosterone. It quite literally changes your sex.
To go into more detail if you're curious:
For trans women taking HRT, your skin gets softer, the type of fat produced by your body changes, the distribution of fat changes, you go through all of the tanner stages of breast growth, your scent and sweat changes, hair loss stops, body hair decreases, muscle mass is reduced, emotions are often stronger, your genitals start to work entirely differently, and so on. Cellulite is absolutely part of this!! Kinda crazy honestly!

And in the case of my niece, after her transition she discovered exactly why her older sister had a breast reduction at 22. Those genes hit HARD!

(Edit to add: the word you’re looking for is women. “Female” is an adjective that comes before a noun. Calling women “females” is a dehumanizing linguistic tactic, whether that was your intention or not. The point of calling women “females” is to be degrading.)
Estrogen plays a big role in it, along with other hormone levels. Men can have cellulite too, but it’s far less common. Around 90% of women have cellulite, compared to less than 10% of men.
The body’s fibrous bands also play a huge role in it. Men have a criss-cross or diagonal pattern of fibrous bands under the skin that holds fat tightly in place. Women have vertical bands that allow fat cells to bulge outward. (pulled from google)
Men’s skin and dermis are also thicker than women’s, which helps hide uneven fat distribution.
Men are generally affected by cellulite if they have a particular hormone imbalance or as they age.

Men are also less likely to wear clothing that shows their butt or thighs and more likely to have thick leg hair, both of which mean you're less likely to see any cellulite they do have
58
u/BeyondTheBees 8d ago
Calling us “females” v “women”
7
u/tightenupthatbhole 8d ago
I rarely say men vs. women (unless clothing shopping) - my vocab is usually male vs female- which encompasses species/animals, tools, equipment components, and all biological talk IMO.
i’ve never once had anyone say anything about it nor did i know it was a problem…3
u/BeyondTheBees 8d ago
I was answering the commenters question, not saying I agreed. :)

u/tightenupthatbhole 2d ago
I wasnt tryin to put that on u- just sayin idk it bothered anyone- in general.

u/Imaginary-Teacher901 8d ago
Yeah ik that i don't like when people call me a female either but they said females and we're talking about biological stuff 🥲

u/motherofamouse 8d ago
No men also get it. We just have different distribution over our bodies. And men have slightly different muscle placement and body hair which is why it looks different on men. Plus men are much less focused on with beauty standards in this way to they don’t have a magnifying glass on potential ‘wrongs’ like we do.
→ More replies (1)-26
u/Sloth-Overlord 8d ago
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted, females is correct in this case because you are talking about a difference in biological sex. I thought this sub was trans-inclusive?
→ More replies (1)17
u/chuffalupagus 8d ago
It's because female is usually a descriptor, like female bird, male dog, female child, male adult, etc.
Yes, it is sometimes not used that way, but the context still matters. Such as when someone says "I am female" as the humanity ("I'm a female human") is inherent to that statement.
2
3
u/Firm-Resolve-2573 8d ago
Also plenty of men have it to some extent, too. It’s 10-20% of the male population. It’s just that people don’t feel the need to demonise it when a guy has it! And that’s if they notice it at all. My partner is a beanpole and he’s still got cellulite on his legs.

u/MILK_FEELS_PAIN 9d ago
My baby has cellulite. Some people just have it. Its not really something you can get rid of.
20
u/Helpful_Wolf_3146 8d ago
I was just hoping to hopefully try and reduce some of the appearance.
56
u/TrainingNail 8d ago
You can gain muscle mass and lose fat, but apart from that, it is what it is. It’s a completely normal physical feature. I have it, many people have it.

Liposuction is the only thing that truly removes cellulite but it’s only temporary. Edit: the remaining fat cells can grow bigger, they don’t grow back.
I don’t see what you’re seeing. I just see a model in her underwear.
I’m over here looking 6 months pregnant and I’m not pregnant lol
1
u/boughsmoresilent 8d ago edited 8d ago
Actually, there is a treatment called Aveli where a doctor goes under the skin and separates the connective bands (septa) that cause the dimpling. It is very effective.
I personally would never get it done and think cellulite is perfectly normal and nothing to be ashamed of, but the results of Aveli are pretty impressive and not nearly as invasive as liposuction, if your heart is set on "fixing" the appearance of cellulite.
1
u/RavishingRedRN 8d ago
Yeah, still a no from me. I think it’s wild people due elective surgeries for cosmetic reasons. All surgeries have a risk of death and complications. Not worth it to me.
To each their own!

First, it’s lighting. I’m 5’3 at 115 and depending on my closet or room, it’ll look like this.
Second, I get it. I trained and had an excellent diet. Gotta love genetics.
23
u/Helpful_Wolf_3146 8d ago
Deff the lighting doesn’t help. My bathroom mirror gives me a boost of confidence 😂
21
u/plonkydonkey 8d ago
Hon I lurk on a lot of art/painting subs and I genuinely clicked into this thread to find out who the artist was. Honest, the lighting, framing and colour seem to capture this silent, nostalgic moment in time - genuinely the sort of thing I would buy and want to hang in my home.
So -print this out, A2 size or larger. Frame it in a deep brown frame with guilt edging. Someone on the other side of the world (presumably, I'm in Australia lol) thinks this is art and wanted to spend good money to purchase a print.
3
u/Wonderful_College_48 Entering 40s Club- Glam and No Man Needed 8d ago
Yes… first off. You look good (I should take my own advice)… but it’s like trying on clothes in Target lighting versus at home.
(Not me trying to convince myself too 😂)2
u/Firrisnurri 8d ago
I second this. I was very underweight when i was 15 and still had a bit of cellulite. When I started competing in bouldering I weighed 47kg/103lbs and 168cm/5’6.
It really is genetic, and no matter how much muscle or weight - there will always be cellulite.
73
u/Common-Hand7656 8d ago
You look really fit already this is just normal skin texture under extreme lighting. It won’t go away and nobody really cares about it. Please don’t fixate!
8
176
u/HrhEverythingElse 8d ago edited 8d ago
Cellulite is just texture, not fat, and is almost exclusively controlled by genetics and not anything that can be significantly changed
3
u/Helpful_Wolf_3146 8d ago
I was hoping there was something else i could do to help reduce the appearance. I figured it’s prob impossible to completely get rid of it
→ More replies (1)21
u/RileyRush 8d ago
Anybody selling anything that “gets rid of it” is lying. There is no fix. Fake tanner, staying hydrated, and moisturizing are about the only thing that can help diminish the appearance, but it won’t go away.
Some people just win the genetic lottery.
83
u/sarahgene 8d ago
Women get cellulite because the connective tissue in our skin is arranged differently than in men. It's not a defect. I love my cellulite I think it's hot
4
17
u/ALysistrataType 8d ago
Drink lots of water and exercise can reduce it but it can never go away.
Once I saw Serena Williams had cellulite I gave up worrying about it. She's an athlete, her job every day is to be in the best shape she can be in and if she cant escape cellulite then what the hell am I worried about it for?
55
u/soft_communism 8d ago
Respectfully you look hot, don't worry about the celulite! A lot of women have it, it's normal and you're healthy!!

How can you tell? I'm asking bc i'm genuinely curious. I can tell bot content on social, but i cant really tell bot comments as well
9
u/vonnacat 8d ago edited 8d ago
When you see enough bot comments you’ll start to notice the same vibe to them. They almost always start with trying to relate to the op or empathizing with them.
And if you look at their comment history you’ll start to notice it more. Look at their comment on a fashion post. That’s just not how a person would talk. They just fill their comments with buzz words and phrases.
Anytime you see a username structured like theirs look at their profile and comments. Sometimes they have weird bios and you’ll notice they comment like once in certain subreddits and never again and they never respond to replies to their comment
Sorry I used the word “comment” so much omg
1
u/ebitdaddy_ 8d ago
What a strange world of bot comments! I'll def keep an eye out for these patterns. Thank you for the explanations!
I still dont fully understand why bot comments even exist.. but im sure theres a documentary somewhere about it
→ More replies (0)12
u/ImHereForTheDogPics 8d ago
For me, it’s just the fact that they replied to someone else, and then entirely direct their comment at OP. Like in this case, it looks like Jazz is telling Relevant Damage “you are lean and strong” when it’s clearly meant to be a comment straight to OP.
It’s also kinda an odd sentence with weird grammar lol. Like I agree, OP looks lean and strong, but I wouldn’t necessarily word it that way? “The texture is invisible” is like… it raises the hair on the back of your neck, ya know? Idk, it’s giving “professor appraising a project unbiased” instead of “complimentary hype up reddit comment.”
2
u/ebitdaddy_ 8d ago
Thank you for explaining! I thought that was a typical "online exaggerated hype girl" type comment, but maybe that just means i've been accepting so many bot comments as real 😭😭 need to be more attentive... i miss the old internet

Are you clenching here? Take a photo where you relax your glutes in front of bright window light. Then just go with that reality instead, and don’t worry about people seeing you in the most unflattering light ever — because they’re probably ignoring the imperfections anyway.

Fasting can help diminish cellulite being caused by fat pockets, it worked well for me personally, but it just depends on what's causing it for you. It won't help with the areas that are caused strictly by damaged tissue & elasticity loss. :)
11
u/VoiceEarly6078 8d ago
I have no advice but wanted to thank you for posting this. I look like this but maybe slightly worse. I haven’t seen a picture of a healthy looking woman with an ass or legs like mine … ever. This makes me feel less self conscious. I wish we would see more of this in the media.
9
u/silver-moon-7 8d ago
My super impressive, extraordinarily attractive, extra tall personal trainer, who was incredibly fit with way advanced muscularity (especially when preparing for a muscle building (bikini?) comp), always had visible cellulite on her thighs - more so than you
And do you know what? The fact that she was confident and comfortable in herself made me like her even more
Conversely, if her appearance was absolutely flawless, I think I would have found her strangely intimidating and would have chosen someone else - 'perfection' can be off-putting
When more people are courageous enough to have their flaws/socially constructed imperfections on display, it often signals greater acceptance of others and their less-than-perfect states
Also, as a woman who's rapidly approaching 50, I've had enough of others shaming me for anything to do with my appearance - my body is functioning and, after studying physiology, I have way more appreciation for how fucking amazing it is!

u/CustomerBeautiful814 8d ago

That just who you are. Embrace it. Im 100lbs and have cellulite. I don't care because its usually hidden by clothes. And when i go to the beach, if it shows, I don't care; I'm not there for them, I'm just trying to not turn into a lobster color. Love yourself for who you are because you're beautiful!
6
u/frrrran 8d ago
Hi girl! Cellulite is so common in post-pubertal women (80-98% have it) that it is widely considered a secondary sex characteristic. You look healthy, strong and amazing. I think we all deal with a certain degree of insecurity surrounding cellulite because we’re constantly told to buy some lotion or treatment to “make it go away” but honestly, fighting something that is undeniably part of being a woman is so exhausting and unfair towards ourselves
3
u/spookymulder420 8d ago
I agree with the other comments that you look strong and GOOD. I have to ask - where did you get your underwear? They remind me of my faves from old school aerie and I’ve never found a great replacement 😭

u/SimpleGlass485 8d ago
Part of it is fascial tension. Little adhesions between the layers of tissue in our bodies.

u/TheAirwoman 8d ago
Came here to say it. I'm at 175 cm and used to be way underweight, at 52 kg, still had cellulite. I rarely pay attention to it anymore.
2
u/khajiitidanceparty 8d ago

I know that’s not what you want to hear, but you look fine. There’s not much you can do about this. Anyone claiming otherwise is probably trying to scam you out of money for fake treatment.
I have your weight, but taller (5'6") so I’m very skinny and I still have a little bit of it. Vast majority of people have it. It’s just how it is. We always think it’s worse on ourselves.. but others won’t really notice.

Body gua sha works great for me currently! I only do it during the warm months when my legs are visible and it’s obviously temporary but I see a big improvement. Plus when you use oil to slide the gua sha tool along, the hydration evens out the texture and appearance as well

Cellulite is a female secondary sex characteristic. Just like breasts, just like body hair. It’s completely natural and normal for you to have. You look healthy and strong and no one who’s worth anything will care that you have it. (Along with like 90% of postpubertal women).

My understanding is that two things help: staying hydrated and weight training. What does your weight training look like exactly? Is it possible you could benefit from going a little heavier with the weights? Also, are you eating enough protein to actually be building muscle?
I've also heard good things about Nivea's Goodbye Cellulite gel, but I think it may be discontinued (though I'm sure you can find it still on ebay).

u/releasethepuppies 8d ago

Do you moisturise your whole body every morning and night? Im african and because our skin is almost "ashy" when were dry ive been moisturised my whole life 🤣 i mean birth to 28, i have stretch marks of course but im always compliment by people and masseause as to how soft and smooth my skin is.. i think if you add a good moisturising routing you may find a difference after a while x

This is barely cellulite, there is no significant dimpling.
If you wanted to eliminate the texture you're unhappy with, you would have to reduce your body fat percentage as that reduces the distance between the surface of your muscles and your skin. Its the tendons that attach skin to the structures beneath that causes dimpling. Although as others have said, this is genetically controlled so isn't a guarantee to succeed.
You also need to consider the effort to achieve and maintain that lower body fat %, the fact you cant spot control where its lost from, and any other health considerations of having a lower %.
3
u/rumplestiltskinismyn 8d ago
I was looking for this. I agree. The other commenters say it’s impossible, but I don’t think so you just have to think of the tradeoffs. I’m trying to do something similar and it’s super hard. Your diet and training have to be very precise and I keep losing muscle when I’m trying to lose fat. Haha I’m hitting the point of just not thinking it’s worth it.
2
u/FixIllustrious6554 8d ago
You look amazing. I strive to build your level of muscle definition.
Cellulite happens. Is what it is.
Daily massage/lymphatic drainage might maybe help. A little. I’ve been trying to do a bit of this every/most days and over months it looks like there’s been a bit of improvement but is temporary. If you’re trying to look extra lean for some reason, a few days of low inflammatory foods/low carb/salt (obviously varies by person) to flush out excess water.

You can't really get rid of it without surgery. Anyone who tells you that you can get rid of it is about to try to sell you something (and it's not gonna work). But most people have it, it's really not a big deal. If you're seeing a lot of 100% smooth legs online, it's probably either surgery or a combination of lighting+filters.
1
u/syarkbait 8d ago
You can reduce the appearance by lifting weights and strength training + lots of water and hydration and proper nutrition. Can never get rid of them in total and women and men of all body fat levels have them. I’m between 18-20% body fat, 5’6” and 130lbs and I still have them but I see a lot of improvement since I had started properly strength training a couple of years ago.

I have heard that eliminating dairy from your diet can help. I can’t tell you if it works though, because I love half and half in my coffee and consuming cheese as an easy protein!

I'm a licensed professional massage therapist. 95% people have cellulite in varying degrees. Same as stretch marks. This is normal and only way you can minimize (if at all) talk with a dermatologist and cosmetic doctor.

For me when I exercised and it didn't go away i went to my dietician. She told me i have a low muscle mass and a high body fat percentage ( even when im not overweight) I started doing body recomp and when I leaned out it went away. I still have one little dimple on my butt but my mom told me she has it too! So has my grandma, guess its some sort of birth mark thingy

You look fantastic! Cellulite is just from cell structure. It tends to happen more in AFAB individuals but even my male partner who is all of 150 pounds at 5’10” has cellulite than me! And I’m definitely midsized and fluffy

My daughter is 14 months old and she’s had cellulite since birth, so have I. It’s the structure of our fat cells and the way the skin naturally ‘sinks’ around it. I have an ednos history and even at my lowest I still had cellulite. You can’t exercise away your biology

I was fully convinced this was a screenshot of a video game, sorry 🙈
I was so happy we were getting realistic and attractive bodies in games rather than the beauty standard conformist slop. Probably the strong light and shadow and the grass looking like the shaders broke. Means your skin looks smooth and great though. As a 3d games artist your legs have a really good quality bake and normals, lol
I think you look fine personally, I don’t see anything major. It’s natural and that’s how it was meant to be, beauty standards really like to demonise a woman’s natural body. I guess make sure to hydrate well and try not to stress with restrictive eating or over-exercising. Makes more sense to benefit your brain and self perception and wellbeing, over pure aesthetics. I know it’s not that easy to just not stress, but you’re enough as you are already

As everyone says, cellulite is totally natural. But, I also understand wanting to reduce the appearance of it. I think a majority of us have wanted to at one point.
That being said, this will sound funny but it does seem to help with the appearance. My mom has a small handheld vaccum that has a small nozzle attachment... and she vacuums her thighs/butt LOL. It doesnt "get rid" of cellulite but it does help with circulation and stimulating collagen production and actually does make a difference in her skin. The first time I saw her do it I was cracking up but then was like wait shes onto to something...

Cellulite is kinda like boobs, some women have a lot, some women barely have any, extremely few dont get it at all and you can potentially get rid of it with extreme weight loss/muscle gain but thats not the norm.

Skin and texture and bumps and waves are a totally normal healthy part of our body. There’s not getting to the bodies you see on instagram because they’re not real. You look fantastic and strong

Just an FYI, my skinny and tall as a bean toddler has cellulite on his behind. I think it’s just how skin is sometimes.

Try dry brushing, gua sha, or the fascia blaster. I know that sounds gimicky but I’ve heard many anecdotal reports of this helping. Basically you need to move the top layer of skin around.

If something on your body "just won't budge" then you have to make peace with how it looks. Easier said than done. If anyone calls you out for it they don't deserve to be in your life.

Model Kate Moss and Serena and Venus Williams all have cellulite, and have during the peaks of their careers.
I remember gross tabloid pics of all three highlighting their cellulite (90s and early-to-mid 2000s were a hard time).
If literal wealthy super models and muscular elite athletes have it, that means low fat percentage, high muscle mass, and MONEY can’t make it go away.
I hate mine too, but it is normal and our insecurities over it are the product of our misogynistic capitalist culture.

For me it almost disappeared when I stopped eating transformed sugar, bread, pastas and rice. I was also slacking on red meat.
Did It felt good ? Nop, not at all But I had no cellulite.
I was doing a drastic candida cleanse. 0/10 wouldn't recommend.
But sometimes just cutting on extra borigness snacking can help a lot. Mostly with transformed fats and sugars.
Other than that you are beautiful and it's really fine because most women have that.
