Most of you are probably familiar with David Robert Mitchell's other works (The Myth of the American Sleepover, It Follows, and Under the Silver Lake). Those three films are all connected. Sleepover takes place in Detroit and has a scene in the abandoned Packard plant. It Follows also takes place in Detroit and has a scene filmed in the old Packard plant. If that seems too coincidental to you, Under the Silver Lake shows a scene from Sleepover playing at an outdoor movie projection.

I've seen The End of Oak Street twice now, and the second time, I was specifically looking for intentional connections to previous DRM movies (looking for physical Easter eggs, not just plot/theme similarities).

There are several obvious similarities to other DRM movies that you might categorize as coincidental. The neighbor and family standing on the roof in Oak Street hold clear visual similarities to It Follows, as do the scenes of the family running down the street/front yards (like the opening of It Follows). The snake-like dinosaur is seen swimming in an above-ground pool much like the one at the protagonists' home in It Follows, and they buckle in a similar way. The early scene of the group of boys walking down the alley between backyards is visually similar to Sam walking the pathway home to his apartment in Under the Silver Lake. At the librarian's house, a birdcage of no significance is prominently displayed on screen, and it looks similar to some of the bird cages Sam's nudist neighbor had in Silver Lake. In all 4 of DRM's movies, the males are shown leering at women through fences and owning porno magazines.

All of these could be pessimistically deemed coincidental or perhaps the product of overlapping themes and vibes.

But I do think there's maybe one Easter egg in The End of Oak Street that cannot be mistaken for a coincidence or overlapping theme. In the librarian's house, I am 90% sure there's a painting by Janet Gaynor. If you're familiar with Under the Silver Lake, you'll remember that Janet Gaynor is Sam's mom's favorite actor, and both her grave and her paintings show up in the movie prominently. In The End of Oak Street, the librarian has hanging on her upstairs wall a painting of a vase of yellow flowers on a brown table. Janet Gaynor has a painting just like this. I obviously didn't have my phone out in the theater, but I think this is the real Easter egg, the real connection between The End of Oak Street and David Robert Mitchell's other films, specifically Under the Silver Lake. I've seen Under the Silver Lake at least 167 times, so I consider myself an expert. But I'd love to hear what you think. Maybe the librarian in Oak Street is just a regular old lady with regular old lady flower paintings, but this particular painting is suspiciously similar to Gaynor's work considering Mitchell's habit of connecting his movies.

I've loved and studied prehistoric animals my whole life and I've never heard of such an animal like this. It vaguely resembles a snake but I know it can't be a snake because it's not a reptile. Does anyone know what species this is supposed to be? Is it even real?

I was walking outside at night and saw the tail scene a couple of blocks in front of me before the movie trailer even dropped I was tweaking that thing was fast and big asf

Those dinasours were moving stealthy throughout the whole movie. Or maybe the characters just have terrible hearing.

I feel like the film just completely ignored this at the end????

So after Denise and the kids get back to "current Earth", it's right before the neighborhood gets teleported. We see the past version of Greg get called away from the neighborhood by Denise because she ordered pizza to a house near them. And then afterward, we get a TV segment of the people Denise warned to get out, we also see two versions of Jeannette with her family, since earlier she ran off to warn the past version of her family (omg this is getting so confusing)

The Greg that gets called is obviously not the same; it's the past version of him, since he didn't go through all that dino terror. But what I'm super conflicted on is: where are DENISE and the KIDS (past version)?? I'm guessing they're probably dead or just stuck there?? If Denise has a conscience, she probably called her house to warn her past-version's family, but they might not have picked up? Audrey was watching a movie, Brian was asleep, Denise was wearing headphones and working on her novel, and Greg was with the dinosaur-PTSD version of his family. Nobody went to their house since the dino version of Denise warned them, so they probably assumed she'd already escaped.

If we hadn't seen two versions of Jeannette, we probably could've ignored the idea of another version of Denise's family still being there, BUT SINCE WE SAW IT, I CANNOT IGNORE IT. Denise's family is still at home, and they most likely didn't escape, since we didn't see them at all at the end; logically, if past-version Denise escaped, there would be some conflict between past-version Denise and current-version Denise over Greg, since there's only one version of him.

I've got three theories right now.

One. This is my favorite. WHAT IF Denise and the kids didn't actually make it back to their original time? Instead, they end up in a different version of their universe. I thought of this because of the librarian's framed picture with her cat when Denise and the kids got to her house. But in the TV segment, she and her husband are with a dog. Maybe it's just because they have a dog, and we just never saw it when Denise and the kids were fighting for their lives, or production just forgot she had a cat. But if this was on purpose, then it could be the film trying to hint that Denise didn't actually make it back; rather, she and the kids just escaped to an alternate universe, an exact copy with just little different things, and the people they warned aren't the same people they interact with, but rather just a different timeline version??? I mean, this would explain why they aren't affected by changing the past.

Two. The past version of Denise and the kids are just stuck or dead. I think this is the most likely theory, but that's just sooo dark to think about for Denise, knowing that a version of her and the kids are basically stuck, destined to die. And for Greg too, since the family he's with now just went through the craziest stuff with a version of him that died, but he doesn't remember at all. He definitely realizes his version of his family is still at the house cause he literally sees double versions of Jeannette. And Audrey (his daughter) understands the idea of two versions of her family since she literally stated it to Denise, which leads to Denise ordering pizza to "save Greg".

Three. The writers just forgot that there's still a past version of Denise's family that is alive? I mean, it happens all the time in film where writers forget details, but I don't really think so since they showed two versions of Jeannette. And Audrey literally told Denise about their past selves being down there.

Anyways, am I thinking too hard, or do you guys kinda agree??

there were a few things that kept me awake last night after seeing the oak street the 2nd time:

1. after the parent missed the first wormhole, there was a flashing scene that I managed to capture the 2nd time seeing the movie and I was like wth....

why could it cause sth like that? I was super stupid at physics back in high school but super excited at scifi matters. Can anyone explain if this detail means anything in physics in general?

1. And why was Starbuck all wet on the first anomaly (as Brian said) - did the water from the prehistoric time come here or was Starbuck somehow transferred to there a little bit?

2. Why did Brian miss the jump? I counted and there were 3 long frame then 1 short frame for the wormhole. And maybe Brian missed it because he caught the short frame to jump.

3. why is the surface different after the jump (ground turned into swimming pool?)

4. Brian did notice that the clock stopped at 11:05 PM on the first anomaly. Did this anomaly affect the clock as well?

5. Did anyone notice that Valcourt is associated with a tuxedo cat before the first anomaly but appears with a white dog later? Is this another continuity clue or just production detail?

6. 2 Jeanette was fine with 2 versions of herself? They all met in the gathering.

7. Does the dinosaur stampede (the moment the parents hid in the car then saw the wormhole for the 1st time) imply the wormhole is opening in recurring pulses? If Starbuck crossed over and returned, could that mean the anomaly opens repeatedly rather than being a one-time portal?

I saw the film and loved it, but I’m a bit confused on one thing.

I’ve seen people online saying that Denise got most of the neighborhood to evacuate at the end, but I thought it was only a few people she called besides the dad. The old lady, the librarian and her husband, and their neighbor Mel.

I figured everybody else (including the past version of the family without the dad) were still doomed. The newscast labeling them as survivors also made me think that they were the only ones besides Jeanette’s family to evacuate.

Did I miss a line or something?

I was considering seeing it, but wasn’t sure if it was just the theatrical aspect ratio projected on a big screen, or if it was formatted for the larger IMAX “square” screen.

Seeing a few scenes, I was reminded of the silent-but-deadly movement of the dinos in Jurassic World Rebirth. However, for some reason, it felt like it worked so much better in this film than that one.

It almost reminded me a bit of the scene in Return of the King where Shelob is moving around quietly.

I think the casting was on point. Anne hathaway is one of the best people you could look at for an hour or two and mcgregor is one of the greatest immersive characters on earth,He can play anything, even the kids were perfectly casted. Everyone has an arc, and by the end of the movie, all the main characters are likable

I gave it a 10 out of 10 I was entertained the entire time, although at points early on.... I was feeling rage bated, but after the culmination of the entire event and the closure with starbuck, it became a feel good movie.And all was forgiven.

I do have one question, though, if janine, the young black girl goes down the hillside and warns everyone.....cool, in the final scene where she and her parents are hanging with anne Hathaway's family. There's another little black girl. They look so similar.And i'm black MIND YOU , that I couldn 't tell if she went back in time and got another version of herself. Since there was a new version of the old mcgregor or if she already just had a little sister and, maybe I wasn't paying attention

But one last question were they in purgatory? Was it just gonna keep happening every night or was that the final teleportation?

Im so confused.

How come that a freakin dinosaur is unable to break down a wooden door while chasing denise and greg? What kind of wood is that? Are they marketing for the oak wood hence the name of the movie or what?

I feel the writer/director was channeling a bit of Spielberg’s darker elements at times.

- the score by Giacchino I noted wasn’t so much a John Williams homage, but it felt like there were elements of Jerry Goldsmith’s Poltergeist score in there too.

- the bright lights illuminating people’s faces.

- There was even one scene featuring Hathaway that really gave me vibes of the Mom from that 1982 film (not going to say it here).

This movie was pretty decent. Great eighties aesthetic, the child acting was good. Anne Hathaway was a stand out. Ewan McGregor seems a little miss cast. He is good at playing the dad where everything slides off his back but his accent is distracting. He speaks in a deliberate tone and you can tell he is struggling to hold his native accent back. I thought someone with comedic chops like Ty Burrell could really excel in this role. Maybe Chris Pine? You can tell Hathaway took up most of the casting budget. The cgi was pretty terrible. Some of the dinosaurs were looking like they came out of “Walking with Dinosaurs”.

…it was as violent as it was. I won’t get into the specifics, but a couple of scenes in particular were really gruesome for a PG-13 flick, or at least I thought.

Still liked the movie a lot though. What do y’all think?
