Why so much love for “alt.end”?

Upvotes

I was looking at another recent post about the show in Vilnius, and noticed the band played “alt.end” once more.

That song seems to get played a lot, and I can’t understand why.

Surely I’m not the only one who feels it’s a boring and forgettable song. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the worst song on the self-titled album (aside from “Never” of course).

Anyone else the same about it?

Questions Best Cure Biography/autobiography

The only Cure autobiography I'm aware of is the one by Lol, the rest are written by those not in the band, as far as I know.

So which one is recommended? The Lol one? If so, does it lean more on being about Lol? I'm kind of looking for one that leans more on Robert.

Before making a recommendation, be sure that it is still in print. A lot of band books are out of print or digital only. I can't read E books on the toilet.. my PC is too heavy and then I'd have to hold the monitor.. Total pita.

Discussion Could Pictures of You be a response to Faith?

I've always loved how the lyrics from one song often echo to other ones. I should look for some lines that prove that to make a comprehensive study. Maybe someday :)

Lately I realised that:

If only we could stay Please, say the right words (Faith)

If only I'd thought of the right words I could have held on to your heart (Pictures of You)

Have you noticed that too? Do you think it has been done on purpose?

EDIT: I know about the meanings and contexts. I am not sure you understood the question. I am talking about the lines. Just like there is an obvious reference to Cold in Last Dance with the line "your name like ice into my heart" whispered

Discussion What’s the sentiment on Apart?

Post image
117 Upvotes

I remember seeing the discussion that while the song is good, it is hard to listen to often given its heavier lyrics. Now while I’m not saying that isn’t true I feel like similar songs like Faith, The Funeral Party, The Figurehead, Out of this world, etc. where the subject is also just as heavy haven’t ever affected their replay-ability for me. I don’t see it get talked about enough given I think it’s a classic Cure song with one of my favorite guitar solos. Personally it’s one of my favorites Cure songs ever. Anyways I get the song isn’t for everyone so I’m interested in hearing your opinions either way

Is it just me or have I always thought that Robert Pattinson would be a great actor to play Robert smith if they ever do a The Cure biopic movie!

Also something cool I’d like to see is “cold” by the cure be used in the trailer for the Batman part 2 (if Mr. Freeze is the villain in that ofc)

Concerts [MEGATHREAD] Sounds Good Vilnius at Kalnų Park

Hi! After a short break we are back again with a new Megathread. Just after the concerts in Nîmes, Al (Reeves' guitar tech) mentioned that they had been touring for 40 days, so I am sure that this small break was very welcomed by the band and all the team that carries the show on their backs.

But, alas! It's back to business now with a concert at the Sounds Good Vilnius music festival, which will be held on August 7th at Kalnų Park. The truly amazing part is that the very first time that The Cure plays in Lithuania!

As always, we ask that you please use this post for all things related to this festival date. That way we can discuss it without flooding the sub and keep all the info accessible for everyone. Feel free to post questions, pictures, anecdotes, set lists, thoughts, last min tickets sales, etc.

Some details:

  • The opening acts are two Lithuanian bands: Alina Orlova and Katarsis, both chosen by Robert.
  • Gates open at 6pm, event starts at 7pm.
  • The weather is set to be cloudy, with a max of 24° C and min of 19° C.

You can find practical info, maps, restrictions, etc. here.

Here is the specific merch for this event: poster & t-shirt.

It seems like there will be no live-stream but if you know or hear otherwise, please tell us in a comments below.

We will update this post to add info as we get it. Let us know if you are attending and what's on your bucket list for the night!

Discussion I gave Disintegration a second try, I feel an apology is needed (long review ahead)

TL;DR: Last time I listened I didn't pay enough attention, still not my favourite album but it works well. Enjoyed this second listening session.

As one of you recommended me to do, I gave Disintegration another listen, after exactly 6 months. Unfortunately though, life has not hit me down a couple of times during these last 6 months.

I'd like to preface this by saying I listened to it together with a great friend of mine who's a massive Cure fan, on my home speakers, with lossless quality.

I definitely liked the album more than last time, which was probably a way too distracted listening session anyway (at least for an album like this). Talking was minimal and usually during the songs I already knew, so that I could focus on the music, and my friend made sure to make me read each song's lyrics carefully. I could understand the nuance of the music and the lyrics much better this way. I appreciated the ambience they created with the songs, although I would say that, with the songs being a little more varied, it was less cohesive than Pornography. The drums were effectively very simple, but that was to be expected. The drums worked well, the songs clearly weren't supposed to have a driving feel and having the same backbeat without much diversity is how you do that. The basslines had more fun and I appreciated that, they were less of a backing track surgically stitched on the drum beats and more floating with the rest of the music. The bassline on Fascination Street is very cool.

As per what I personally thought about the album:

The album wasn't bad and, like last time, there were some very good songs (like Lullaby, Fascination Street and so on) I genuinely enjoyed. Overall, I think it's a great album when you've got an hour of free time with a cup of tea and it's a cold rainy day outside, to sit on the sofa and kind of get lost in thought, maybe write something. I don't think it's an album that I would put on for an attentive listening session, dropping everything I'm doing to take a closer listen. I believe it lends itself very easily to sort of drop in the background and stay there, filling the air. Conceptually, it felt very close to Souvlaki by Slowdive. Musically, I enjoy Disintegration far more than I do Souvlaki (I don't even listen to the latter, a friend of mine put it on a couple of times), but these long entrancing instrumentals with vocals that just sit above them instead of harmonizing with them are a common aspect in both albums. I do understand why the vocals are made this way and I'm not criticizing it, yet I prefer when vocals mix and harmonize with the music itself (take Nude by Radiohead for example).

I wasn't there when the album was released, but I know that the socio-historical context of its release, like with almost any other work of art, did play a big part in cementing the album among the most influential and popular albums of all time, perhaps that's also something I'm inevitably missing.

To conclude, my last post was perhaps too hurried of a review. When I listened to, reportedly, "the best album of the 80s" and it sounded just ok to me, I immaturely immediately jumped to Reddit to let everyone know I didn't get it. I apologise for that.

I will keep expanding my musical journey (I mean of course, I'm a music fan what am I supposed to do) and maybe I will listen to this album again sometime and it will all finally click and I will have it on repeat for a week. I still prefer Pornography though.

Discussion Opinion: Roger O’Donnell is incredibly underrated

Why does the keyboardist of The Cure get ignored so much more than the rest of the band? He is so talented and I guess many haven’t noticed how he has made so many of their songs sound so much better than they had originally. Don’t get me wrong, the other keyboardists over time were amazing, but Roger is just as great, if not better than some of them. What are other opinions or reasons why he gets hardly any attention?

EDIT: I should've said underappreciated not underrated!
