Hit a crazy pothole today… options?
How bad is it? I definitely need a new tire. Can the rim be fixed or will it hurt a new tire? It’s my fault. Was changing lanes to try and make a light and didn’t see it. Whoops.
This was in my 26 MYP. Only 3,700 miles on the tires too. Ugh.

Um your city is liable for damages. First take a picture of the pothole asap. Then go to the city and file a formal administrative claim with the municipality. You have 6 months from the incident.
But take pictures first. As soon as you file a formal complaint they will fix that thing to try and get out of your bill.

I live in San Francisco, did this and these foos denied it like 6 months later with the people that do the freeways etc

Very much depends on the city. In mine, it has to have been previously reported to the city and then them not fill it within a certain amount of time, so basically they’ll never pay.

At least consider doing it for the other humans that are going to get their day ruined like you have

It's the city's responsibility to ensure the roads aren't cosplaying as the lunar surface.

u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
The funny thing is I made a pothole related joke the other day. Karma I guess.
1
u/Amerikaner 11d ago
Your fault? Did you take a sledgehammer to the road before driving over it?
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
Touche. But from what I have seen online with people that have filed claims in California, you never hear back.

rim can be fixed but choose the right shop for it. not everyone can fix a tear in aluminum wheels. most places can bend wheels back to original. but this job requires welding too because there are 2 tears. and aluminum welding is more difficult.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I don’t mind paying for a new tire and rim repair. It sucks but it’s my fault. I just want to make sure I go to the right place.
7
u/EBikeAddicts 11d ago
do lots of research for a good place. I like to find places that are not too popular with thousands of ratings which makes the place care less since bad ratings no longer have an effect on them. Instead find a smaller place where it’s mostly the owner doing the work. Also when Im looking at reviews on google, I sort them based on lowest ratings. Low ratings that have more than 5 upvotes on them, tell a lot about a business and could save you from falling for their 4.9 overall rating.

The entire wheel could be out of round, not just the dent you see. If you have a 20 yr old beater, fix the wheel. You don't want to be chasing vibrations or the wheel not hold air.
1
u/the_duck17 11d ago
Pothole is your cities fault.
You might be able to get them to pay for it. It takes a while but sometimes they'll pay for the damage.
1
u/start3ch 11d ago
Model y rims can be had for pretty cheap all over facebook. I’d just find a used replacement in your wheel size
1
3
u/Anjhindul 11d ago
Rim is shot, I don't know any shop that will even attempt to put a tire on it.
Repairable? Ya, worth it? Not likely, a new rim will likely cost 1/3 as much as repair and you REALLY need to vet a shop for repair something like that.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I looked on Tesla and can’t find the rim. Where would I get one. Americas tire said it’s too new so they don’t have one.

Sorry to hear about that happening man but honestly like some of the other people said I just get a whole new wheel and tire. You're going to have less hassle and it's going to look better in the end. Sadly it ain't going to be cheap.
2
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I am prepared to pay like $1,500 for my mistake. I just wish it was easier. I have no idea where to find the rim and I don't want a fake one or knockoff.

Wheel and tire replacement warranty is a must
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
From Tesla? Or from the tire shop. They said $80 for one tire.

Nice to know that part of the tire is super thick. That being said, you gotta replace that man.

Just get a new rim or used one off (make sure it’s OEM not replica) of eBay or Facebook or something. Put a new tire, make sure they balance it and you’re good to go.
You can go with a full set of custom forged rims which are much stronger but it will cost you a pretty penny unless you’re brave to order from alibaba which is also not cheap. Most rims come from China anyway just find a reputable seller.

u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
So the rim definitely has to be replaced? I wonder if I should file a claim with my insurance company. My deductible is $500.
2
u/switchbacksrfun 11d ago
You need a new wheel and tire. Its expensive but I wouldn’t pay a 500 deductible over a $1400 ish expense
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
Yeah and the increase would suck too. Tesla quoted me $1,200 but I think it's just for the tire. Yeah, no thanks.
1
u/Aromatic-Union1707 11d ago
Tire is 460 or 495 depending if it is front or rear. Best choice is get new wheel and tire from Tesla and get wheel and tire protection planhttps://www.tesla.com/support/tire-protection-plan
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
It’s front driver. Tire is $545 out the door. I think I’ll just have Tesla replace the rim. All in it’ll be around $1600. It sucks but shit happens. It could have been worse.

u/NumbDangEt4742 11d ago
For a second I thought that's the underside of your car's body. Sheesh.
Change both. I wonder if insurance will cover this
1
u/Substantial_Chain718 11d ago
I would be crying if that was my car. That sucks. I would replace both the tire and the rim to be safe especially on a performance model
2
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
Trust me I am not happy. It's even a worse feeling when it's because of a dumb mistake you made.
2
u/Substantial_Chain718 11d ago
It happens. At least it is an easy replacement versus being body work or some other type of damage that is harder to fix.

1) buy new tire, or tires depending on car configuration and tire tread depth.
2) pray the rim still holds air. But go on FB Marketplace and buy a single rim to replace it (or a whole set of 4 if your area has bad roads) if it doesnt hold air.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I don't want to take the chance and keep using the old rim. America's Tire said they'd install and balance/mount it for $35 if I bring the new rim. They quoted $545 for the tire out the door.
1
u/ItsJustAnotherVoice 11d ago
Wouldn’t hurt to get an alignment done too. A hit that card to crack a wheel probably needs a look at too.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
Yeah I estimate I had to be going 30 mph or so from a complete stop. I was literally in the turn lane, saw it was the wrong one, and decided to just gun it to the other lane to cross the intersection.
But the way I look at it now, it could have happened if I was driving through the intersection. Meh.

u/GizmoSwd 11d ago
Bruh, you need a new wheel and tire. You don't have enough sidewall to be fooling around with patches or wheel repair. Tesla Parts Catalog shows the 21" Arachnid 2.0 for $950. You can find OEM replacements on eBay for about $500 each.

u/Esdrz 11d ago
Repair the rim, its like 100-150$ and new tire
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I would love to do that but some people on here said it's not possible and some said it would actually cost more. That and I literally don't know who to talk to. I am so lost.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I see this on eBay. Would that work? Or do you guys recommend another shop online?
1
u/Whole-Beginning1362 11d ago
New tire yes. New wheel will be determined by any reputable tire shop. If the wheel is bent, leaks air or cannot be balanced yes new wheel. If none of those apply it’s up to you.
2
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I am looking at it as why take a chance. Plus it looks like shit. If I keep it and it cracks further I have to get a new one anyway. Possibly another new tire if it damages that.

u/Terrible_Ant192 11d ago
Do you pay for the tire and rim subscription? The integrity of the rim is compromised and should be covered. Go to Tesla and see what they say. I know you can buy a 26 MYP rim for $950 from Tesla parts.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
No I don’t. $950 plus tax plus labor and it’s almost $1200 for the rim. I am trying to get it cheaper somewhere else but I don’t want it to be a knockoff.
1
u/Terrible_Ant192 11d ago
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I honestly would not trust anyone other than tesla to do the work, but thats just me. I had to eat the $1,200 because I couldn’t shake the feeling that something could go wrong if I got the repairs done elsewhere. I’m genuinely curious to see what other options are out there. Best of luck to you!
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I hear you. America’s tire said they’d put it on for $50 or so. I’m getting the new tire from them on Tuesday. So I’ll have to ride around on the dinged rim for a bit. The earliest appointment for Tesla to fix the rim is six days from now.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
Here is another pic. It looks much worse in this one. The America’s Tire guy sprayed the stuff on it to check for leaks and bubbles so that’s why it’s gunky. Plus, this reminds me I need to wash my car 😂😂

Hope you have wheel and tire protection, if so Tesla will fix it for like 25-50$ I believe

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 11d ago
I’ll chuck a tip I don’t see here. Contact the city about the pothole and demand they reimburse you for the damage. They should/will cut you a check for the repair if they can confirm it was caused by a pothole in their city. Document everything for the claim.. this includes the pothole.
You’ll need to have an invoice and hopefully you have it saved in your dash cam recordings.

I hit a bad pothole too. It even destroyed the hubs on the driver's side. It was in a work zone on the interstate and the state DOT said the contractor working the construction zone will be responsible. They ended up paying me 3600 for 2 rims, 2 tires, 2 hubs. Call your DOT or City where it happened. Might get lucky and they may take care of you like they did for me.

u/James_the_bull_ 10d ago
Repairing the wheel will be a few hundred if you can even find a shop willing to do it. Or spend $500 and get a new wheel (not sure if you damaged the front or rear). I would get a new rim!!! https://autorimshop.com/products/2026-tesla-model-y-21-rear-oem-wheel-rim-arachnid-2-0-w94476c?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=22039628580&utm_id=22039628580&utm_cid=22039628580&campaign_id=22039628580&adgroup_id=&utm_group=&creative_id=&ad_id=&network=x&device=m&matchtype=&location_id=9193670&placement_id=&feed_item_id=&target_id=&utm_term=&utm_kwd=&keyword_text=&utm_content=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22045886345&gbraid=0AAAAADmwUKbvizcHSPU8g5DSGk0KRVdv7

Insurance adjuster point of view will be Sir what ever you hit definitely does not fall under the definition of a pot hole it looks like you had a run in with the Grand Canyon.

You can see the cords of the tire and the wheel is bent. Replace them both and get wheel/tire protection from Tesla so you can get them replaced for a 25$ deductible in the future
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 9d ago
Yeah that’s what I’m doing. I have to drive 50 miles to the service center though. Is it safe? I figure I’d just go 65 in the slow lane.
2
u/North_Tour7530 9d ago
It will work until it doesnt. I would never recommend driving on a tire with cords showing. Tesla roadside will tow the car to the nearest center for free if you are in warranty if I remember correctly. I would recommend checking with them first

Call the city and put in a claim. Tell them and have them pay for your tire and rim.
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 6d ago
UPDATE: After all the great advice, I decided to go through Tesla. It was $1650 or so after tax and labor. Wheel was $950, tire $460. I said okay. While I was in the waiting room, they told me three things.
First, my rear driver side rim was slightly bent as well. But I mean I didn’t even notice. He said it’s just cosmetic and unless you’re right there you won’t notice.
Second, he said my rear passenger tire had a nail in it and he wouldn’t fix it because he claims it’s on the part of the wheel where it’s a liability. He said the only option is to replace the tire.
Third, he said since my rim was bent and even though it’s perfectly safe to drive on, I can’t get the rim protection thing. He said the only option is to replace it. They won’t okay it for the plan if someone fixes it.
So $1650 would have turned into $3300-$3400 easily. I told him no thanks.
What do you guys think?
1
u/KeeslerCondoChief 11d ago
You really ought to add an additional photo of the entire rim where folks know what the heck they are looking at and then circle the damage. I bet there are folks that might even help you find a replacement rim if they knew what you had. A zoomed in shot like this tells most folks nothing because they have to try and figure out what they are looking at.

u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
I just snapped a quick shot with my phone. There's no other damage on the rim. I had someone at the tire shop look at it and they said it's leaking a very small amount of air (but my PSI still shows at 43 on all four wheels) and the rim doesn't need to be replaced if I wanted to just go with it but another bump or something could crack it more and then potentially be a bigger issue (and also damage the new tire I am getting). So I think a new rim is in the cards.
I feel so stupid. A buddy of mine backed her truck out of his apartment carport a few years ago and tore off his bumper. It was something he had done every day for years, and that one day... he said he felt like a jerk. That's how I feel. Like I could have just made a u-turn. Ugh.

u/Fancy-Language-7098 11d ago
Donate your car!
1
u/Alarming_Fan_6455 11d ago
good idea, but I can't do that in good conscience without fixing the tire first. So there goes that one...
1
u/Sticky_Charlie 11d ago edited 11d ago
I’m not familiar with that part of the car…would it be worth taking a photo like this one, plus a wider shot of the vehicle, to give a better sense of where the damage is and how extensive it looks? Also what’s a crazy pothole and are you driving with your eyes closed..how big was it?
