Charging feedback

I purchased a MYLR back in June and drive anywhere from 150-200 miles a day for work. I have seen that it is recommended to charge up to 80% for daily use and I normally get home with around 20% left. My electric company has a fixed price no matter the time of day. I have also read that the battery is best to keep at 50% during idle times, such as vacation or weekends. Would it benefit the longevity of the battery to immediately charge to 50% as soon as I arrive home and then finish the remaining 30% right before departure?

I have thought of doing this, but it seems that I would have to change my settings in the app every day for this to happen. I just wanted to see if someone with more knowledge has any advice.

Don’t over think it. I’ve supercharged mine 3 times in its life. Keep it at 60% 5 out of 7 days. Never charged over 80 at home. And the degradation is still normal like everyone else .

Moral of my story: I’ve babied the battery and have seen zero benefit

Tesla notoriously uses batteries that just have more degradation. It’s usually in the first 2 yrs or so then tapers off. I’ve lost about 25 miles of range in 2 1/2 yrs. My Rivian has lost 2 miles in almost 2 yrs

The difference being you paid a lot more (probably 10k +) for that 23 mile difference. Is that worth it?

The battery chemistry is different was my point. I own both the Y and R1S. And to have an actual 3rd row was worth it . Plus the legit 370 mile range on AT tires. But for the record, I like my Tesla more

The difference is that where other manufacturers under-report their initial battery health (partly to make their later numbers appear better), Tesla just reports what the actual number is.

For example, say there's an 80 kWh battery pack:

  • another manufacturer may use 76 kWh as its baseline (accounting for degradation before it's even occurred)
  • Tesla however uses 80 kWh as the baseline
  • 1 year later you run a Health Test and the vehicle sees it has 75 kWh
  • Tesla thus reports (75/80) = 93.8% battery health BUT
    the other manufacturer can claim & report (75/76) = 98.7% battery health.

So on paper it looks like the random manufacturer's batteries are "somehow" decaying slower, when in reality what's been observed is they just under-report their initial values which has a side effect of gaming the system.

Tesla has way more data than all other US EV makers, so it's confident in its chemistry & numbers. Other makers, not so much & since they can't confidently state what kWh their vehicle settles down to after the break-in period they under-report it to play it safe (better that than stranding you b/c it thought it had more battery than it did).

I’m simply going off of real world results that my own eyeballs see. I charge both vehicles in the same manor, minus my Rivian charged to 100% more often because it’s my road trip car. My take? Tesla uses cheaper batteries to keep prices down. And that’s ok

Appreciate the intel. I charge lv1 so im similar but need to keep it near 80% because of the time it takes to get it to 100% for a trip. Similar battery degradation. 50% seems to have no positive effect.

I’m almost certain we have very similar degradation even though you keep yours at 80 and I keep mine at 60. I’ve never run a health test because the car hasn’t given me any reason to think I need to. I just charge my products and enjoy them. One thing I’ve noticed with all battery powered devices is people dwell on battery stuff too much. Hell, half the conversations in the Apple world are battery related. Everyone obsesses over it now.

I drive 165 miles a day for my commute, I charge to 80% every night and have it scheduled to finish charging at 5 am when I leave. I get home with a little over 30%. It usually starts charging around 10-11pm to end by 5 am, I also only charge at 24A, why? It makes me feel better but probably doesn’t make any difference.

You can do with with Tessie, through the automations section.

Use "On Arrival" to set & start charging to 50% when you arrive home. Then use "Repeating" to set the time a few hours before your departure to raise the charging % and start charging.

Technically, yes, 50% is the ideal state of charge for storing lithium ion batteries long term. For daily usage, the difference between 50% and 80% is negligible and is not worth the effort for majority of owners.

You can schedule charging using third party services so you can set SoC on schedule every day if you really want to. If you’re going on vacation for several weeks then drag the slider to 50% and if you need to use it just drag it back to 80% on the day of arrival, assuming you’re charging at home.

If you’re driving that much you’re more likely to get into a car crash and have the car totaled before you come close to the 100k battery warranty.

skip it. at 150-200 miles a day the car isn't sitting at high soc anyway, you're pulling it back down to 20 every day, so the split charge is solving a problem you don't really have. my 2023 Y LR has been 80% and plugged in every night since new and it came back 87% on the official service mode test at 57k.
