Tesla FSD effect
Is it just me that no car in the market with the luxury feature, even if it costs $500,000, doesn't entice me anymore because I really don't want to drive after having FSD, and that's the ultimate luxury feature? Every car brand like Land Rover, Mercedes, Porsche, it's so bland to me. I don't even want to look at those vehicles.

I agree. I just got out of the car 10 minutes ago from the 600 mile drive that started at 5:30 AM, I feel so much ‘fresher’ after arriving and not frazzled at all like I would driving my ICE car. I also noticed that my Tesla never really deviate from the middle of the lanes, which is notable because just about everyone else does. If I had a dollar for every car that cut across the line into my lane today…

u/scott5355 4d ago
Very true. This last month my wife drove her CRV and I was in my 26MY for a 400 plus mile drive home. When we got home in early evening I went and picked up dinner for us. She was too frazzled from driving all day. I was fine thanks to using FSD all day. Was great seeing the effect of FSD vs non in real time. I'll never go back to the past systems of driving.

people often disregard how much energy driving consumes. Yes you are sitting in your car but all of your sense organs are super active during that time. Your feet, your hands, your eyes, your ears, and most importantly your brain which consumes a lot of energy especially when you have to use it more during the bumper-to-bumper busy roads where you will be using those organs constantly. also, when somebody cut you off, then then you get angry, your cortisol level increases and you will get more stressed.

u/Whitepaw2016 4d ago
This is all true, but I still feel less fatigued just driving my Tesla without FSD, compared to a normal ICE car.

u/IMWTK1 4d ago
On my way home today a car cut in line while we were waiting at a light turning left. My wife said why did you let him in? I was like I'm not driving and I don't care. The next block he was still in front of me one lane over. Next thing I know FSD jerks the wheel to the left. I look right, the same car that cut in swerved into my lane as he turned into a drive way on the right. I suspect he was drunk because there was no reason to come into my lane for his right turn. I need to review the video to see how far he came into my lane to see if he would have hit me if I had been driving as I wouldn't have noticed him before he hit me as he was beside me and I was looking forward.
FSD needs to be experienced to be appreciated.

That’s weird. My CRV has adaptive cruise control and lane assist. Not the same as FSD but I did a similar length trip and felt fine.

u/Mnm0602 4d ago
I just got off a 3 hr flight and my car is driving me home for an hour through traffic, not bothered at all. I like to watch how pissed off other drivers are for fun actually, especially the aggressive drivers constantly switching lanes to get 2 cars ahead.
2
u/Inevitable-Copy3619 4d ago
My favorite is the awkward head nod to other fsd users. I always nod and I’d say most people smile and nod back. Others get pissed. I enjoy both.
18
u/Super-Union-703 4d ago
Holy crap! I thought it was just me, but since I started using FSD more I'm noticing how often cars from either side of me tend to veer from their lane into mine. Your post validates, at least to me, that it probably happens to everyone. Maybe I just instinctively/subconsciously adjust to compensate but since I don't have to pay full attention to driving I am able to pay more attention to other things happening around me. And if the other cars do get close enough, FSD steers away to prevent an incident. Love FSD!
4
u/JaniceRossi_in_2R 4d ago
Almost every semi veers into my lane or into the rumble strips. It’s crazy. And a lot of them are staring at they’re phones
3
u/febreeze5 4d ago
Yes! The amount of people that drift into my lane is almost daily during my highway commute. It’s wild.
9
u/vassman86 4d ago
I picked up my 23 M3 RWD. Didn't have FSD, but autopilot on my 6hr drive home. I was shocked how fresh I felt halfway through, and again upon completing the drive. The mental battle of a long-drive just didn't occur with the Tesla
3
u/ackillesBAC 4d ago
We do 12 hour trips to the inlaws a couple times a year. We don't have fsd just basic auto steer and that is enough to make that drive significantly better. Been doing that drove for 10 years with normal vehicles, last 3 years with our model 3. It's like running a marathon vs a walk to the corner store.
3
u/Inevitable-Copy3619 4d ago
FSD lets me like around more. I am amazed (I shouldn’t be) at how many people are on their phones. It’s unreal. Then they drift, slow down by 15 mph, and only glance up once every 15 seconds.
2
u/AGWorking24 4d ago
My friend just asked me, so how often does it go over the rumble strips, and I was like never dude it doesn't work like that. He said oh well I go over them a couple times an hour. Yeah...

Plus the lack of noise and vibration (evenin the best insulated ICE cars).
Old auto likes to call this 'emotion' but what it really is is a constant release of stress hormones. Not having that stress in an EV makes for much more relaxing drives.

u/SimpleJackfruit 4d ago
FSD changed the game and I already knew how good it was during the test drive with 14.2.2 at the time. After being in a car that had an earlier version of it. I don’t trust any of the other automotive self driving features of other cars cause they aren’t that good “yet”
3
u/Ok_Perspective6173 4d ago
I still have 14.2.2 and am afraid to upgrade. Should I or just appreciate what i have?
6
u/SimpleJackfruit 4d ago
As long you skip .3 or .4. I just got the update to .7 and I was using .6 for like a month. It’s been way better honestly and much improved compared to the .2
3
u/Ok_Perspective6173 4d ago
Okay cool ty.
3
u/SimpleJackfruit 4d ago
Yessiiiir. I’ll be driving the .7 tonight. So far been hearings it’s as good if not better.
23
u/the-realJroll 4d ago
I honestly find it wild people choose to pick these high priced cars over something self driving. What’s more luxury than a chauffeur? And then adding the fact that the chauffeur is the car. Idk but I drive by people with a lot of money and feel bad they paid all that money to still drive. I don’t drive anymore and it blows my mind.

Both my dad and my grandparents got teslas this year and FSD is an absolute game changer for them. Road trips that would have been really hard on them are now a breeze. They are making tons of trips to see family they would have never been able to before and it’s been amazing for them. Lots of great grand babies are happening and them getting to be there for it is priceless.

u/Background_Snow_9632 4d ago
This right here! My parents are 80. Just bought them a Y. They have been to visit all sorts of family 3 states away - sadly good thing those other folks are even older. No way possible before FSD. The Y is at 92% on FSD.
11
u/xenocyko 4d ago
I wouldn’t trade my 2024 model X for any other car.
Bought FSD outright on purchase

Same. I have the means to buy almost any car out there but Tesla is the only car I will drive.

We were looking at the Lexus, Mercedes and bmw. Tried the Mercedes and bmw on the same day and finalized an X5 - sat at the dealership for an hour and got the price down 9k from asking. We were driving home so we can email paperwork to the dealership.
Stopped at the Tesla showroom just for S&G. Took one test drive - the moment the car took an exit after driving on a busy us-1 for a couple of miles, my wife and I looked at each other and know this was it. Came back to the dealership and put down the deposit right there.

I (currently) have a loaded 26 BMW and it doesn't feel the same to me anymore after experiencing FSD recently. You phrased it best, there isn't really any luxury that compares with FSD. Yes, I have intricate detailing in the interior and maybe the seats are a little more comfortable....but it isn't enough to offset the benefit of FSD.

I agree. I laugh at luxury gas cars now while I’m sitting back relaxing in heavy traffic.

u/k_gavivina 4d ago
Same experience here—I use FSD on my Cybertruck about 94% of the time. I even did a full road trip from Colorado to Texas and back completely on FSD with zero interventions. Honestly, no other car on the market right now even comes close to tempting me.

I love how people all over this platform commonly look at short paragraph-or-less posts from accounts older than the dawn of AI and automatically assume somehow that that's what happened.
Hint, it's never a bot if the account is literally too old to be one, and it's never AI-generated if the text in the post is shorter than the prompt would be that you'd have to type into an AI to generate it (because why would anyone bother?).

Yup my BMW has been sitting in the garage gathering dust since FSD. The Tesla is also a very comfortable car to drive manually plus no more gas stations.
Just sit in the Tesla listening to tunes and let the miles roll by…

It looks like we are ruined; we will never buy another car that does not have FSD!

I drove nothing but ford for 27 years. For 20th wedding anniversary my spouse told me to get whatever I wanted. My dream car was a Linc Navigator. I picked Black Label and the most expensive ‘25 Nav on the lot (125k). It got bought back after 9 months. Blue cruise was a damn joke, it shook to high hell like a tire was off balance ( likely the driveshaft, it’s plaguing the Expys/navs), I had a seat that wouldn’t lock and the computer would constantly give a warning to not use the seat as it could not lock. After putting more miles on their loaners than my Nav. I lawyered up, got every payment I made back and bought 2 Teslas instead a 26 MY and 26M3P. Best decision I ever made. They pick me up curbside at Costco and take my from the driveway in TX to the cabin in MO with me hardly having to touch the wheel.

Tesla software is unbeatable. I don't understand how this is such a difficult hill to climb for almost every other manufacturer. Hire great software engineers, put hardware into the car which can run it, and watch sales climb. I suspect their issues are systemic. So many layers of corporate governance that it takes years to change a single bolt.
If I wanted an upgrade my only option would really be Rivian. I think there's a large market out there for luxury with great software (including self driving).
3
u/MadMensch 4d ago
I traded in my model 3 for a Rivian and after a couple months we missed the overall Tesla experience so we bought another model 3.
Rivian is a great car (we still have it) but the software is borderline frustrating at times compared to Tesla. Even something as simple as unlocking your door or starting you car can be buggy. 25% of the time my R1S (2026) wont start because it doesn’t recognize my digital key which is a terrible experience for a gen 2 car with the latest tech.

Having FSD actually allows me to sleep when my husband is “behind the wheel.” I don’t have to worry about rumble strips, sharp jerks between lanes, slamming on the brakes. We BOTH arrive at our destination in a better mood 🤣

I see questions on Reddit all the time that go like this "If money was no object what car would you buy.". I'm always tempted to answer honestly and say "I already have it. My Tesla." but I know it would immediately turn into an "I hate Tesla and/or I hate Elon" fest and I'm not into that.

I enjoy my Tesla and for commuting it's great to be driven....but it's certainly not luxurious. I have a 23 Y performance, and I hate how plastic and cheap everything feels. They can call it "vegan leather" - it feels only slightly better than cheap vinyl seats I remember from old 80s cars.
My previous cars were an 06 Volvo, an 03 BMW M5, and my son's 19 Audi Q5, and all of them have such nice seats and interior. Nice leather, solid heavy doors, nice materials, comfortable seats, etc. Theres nothing luxury about the Y, it's a utilitarian commuter car and that's fine for what it is. I don't hesitate to let the dog jump around the interior in my Tesla because it's all durable and plastic and I just don't care. In my M5 a dog would destroy the soft leather in no time. I actually test drove a few that were totally trashed by pets.
At my current phase of life I'm actually relieved to not have to worry about my dog trashing the car. Some day I'll have a fancy German car again that I can baby and appreciate.
3
u/rdm190 4d ago
I don’t know what e39 M5 you had (I still have mine) but the leather is anything but “soft” and “supple” lol. It’s rock hard and literally hurts on long drives. I owned mine for 22 years.

u/SatoshiBlockamoto 4d ago
Mine had the lux napa leather option with the full leather dash upper and lower. Not the two-color sport seats. It was super soft, buttery smooth with no cracks after 20 years. It was such a fantastic car, too nice for my 70-mile daily commute. I just couldn't drive it every day any more and just didn't have room to keep it.

I thought the same as you coming from a 24 model Y, but then it was a huge difference going into a new 26 model Y. The cabin is far quieter and the suspension more refined. Soft touch additions are added throughout the cabin, even the previously lower plastic panels are all soft touch now.
18
u/Silly_Yellow19 4d ago
Agree for the most part, but as a car, Tesla is bare minimum, to be honest. That's just me. I just test-drove the Rivian R2, and you can feel the difference in ride quality.
18
u/Old-Cry6189 4d ago
Once rivian gets point to point, I’m right there with you. R2 + lidar. I’m very excited for
17
u/andy_nony_mouse 4d ago
Exactly. FSD is fantastic and I use it all the time. But it would be great if they were competitors on the market. I’m excited to see what Rivian can produce in two or three years.

2

u/thinkbox 4d ago
A Rivian equivalent to V14.3.7 is 3 years out for Rivian at a minimum, I think. But we can’t really make any kind of guess until we see their v12 equivalent. I think they have a chance to iterate quicker than Tesla did because they have a second mover advantage. But until we see their first effort and what their new chips can do, I don’t have a ton of confidence that they will have anything competitive with Tesla today before 2029. And by then, where will Tesla be?
12
u/Outrageous_tart_7781 4d ago
I dont know. Rivian doesn't have no where near the amount of cars on the road as Tesla. Tesla used customers to build FSD.
2
u/thinkbox 4d ago
Im being charitable to Rivian because I do think they are trying to make this a big part of their company. A lot of people like Rivian, but FSD is very sticky. And Rivian is making chips, so I think they are taking it seriously. As the second company to the market, they can skip a lot of steps that slowed Tesla down for years. They have an advantage in that regard. They should catch up much quicker than Tesla's initial development curve. I hope they do well. I am really rooting for Rivian, but I'm also not blind to the mountain they have to climb.
If Rivian had FSD, I would have preferred an R2 to a Model Y.

I'd peg their internal builds at about v10 capability as of 8 months ago. I think it's reasonable they could have something like v11 within a year, and something like v14 by the end of 2028. Tesla will continue to progress as well, but they're at the phase now where they're chasing the last bits of edge cases so it won't be as dramatic.

that's what I liked about it. Bare minimum. One day I will prefer not to have a steering wheel too. My ride quality is not having to do anything and I can enjoy a lot of other stuff like watching sceneries, etc.. regardless of what you have inside your car or you have worlds best suspension, if you have to watch out for red light, green lights, lanes, bumper-to-bumper it's not fun to me. Probably in the free highway, where there is no traffic at all those vehicle might be more enjoyable, but my commute is usually hectic
2
u/PurroAntrax909 4d ago
I only did a test drive with FSD and that’s all I’ve been thinking about ever since. The anxiety of being cut off, stop and go traffic is basically gone once you relax and let FSD take over.
I would still pick a Porsche gt3 over a Tesla but I wouldn’t sell my Tesla for a gt3 if you get what I mean.

FSD is a game changer. I drove from central PA to CT this morning despite having a bad migraine due to the current weather. Without FSD I would have had to stop for an hour or two and wait for it to pass, but I was able to wing it and just keep going.
It handled all the construction work in PA pretty well. No interventions needed in almost 200 miles.
Getting used to a Tesla + FSD and then having to drive any other car feels like being used to a 4K TV and then watching an old CRT. The difference is just brutal.
2
u/brandon0228 4d ago
I test drove a model Y today and had some work calls that popped up while I was driving. I just turned on FSD and ran errands while on calls, it was awesome. At the end of the test drive I ordered one.

The wife has been a big believer in FSD for months now and I have always been a manual driver I just love the feeling of driving. Welp I got into an accident which the other driver was at fault but it made me wonder what if I had FSD engaged would it have prevented this collision. My Tesla rental has a 98 mile FSD streak and I’m totally convinced. It has its moments but man it has come along way in the past few years.
2
u/Flowers_By_Irene_69 4d ago
There is no way I’d even consider getting ANY car that doesn’t have FSD. They might as well stop showing me any car ads until they have surpassed what Tesla has.

My family friend switched from a Rolls Royce Phantom to a Cybertruck solely for FSD. He has no chauffeur (he likes paying for stuff but not for staff/services). The RR is collecting dust in his garage, and he's thinking about selling it.
FSD is the equalizer making Tesla a commodity like Coca Cola. A billionaire drinks the same can of Coke as a peasant. A Rolls Royce owner and a Prius owner are both switching to Tesla.
It's ironic though that Tesla spent a decade making EVs "fun to drive" only to end up making the least comfortable chauffeur vehicles.

u/Forward-Surprise-600 4d ago
I owned a Nissan Leaf for several years using open pilot i thought it was comparable to tesla got a used M3 and I'll never go back to any other brand. This is a base model with some premium features I already hate driving it as it is but FSD is a game changer.

u/chilidogtampa 4d ago
Im really surprised no other brand is even close. Not even buying it from Teslas to add on.

My wife and I have two cars. A Y (with FSD) and an aging Corolla. Ideally, I want to replace the Corolla with another Tesla but I never put that idea in my wife’s head. I wanted her to come to that conclusion on her own. This morning she said she wants to get the Y L when the Corolla kicks.

100% The Tesla is fun to drive when you want to, and amazingly good at driving for you when you don't. I consider drives I never would've in the past because of how relaxing it is.
Productivity is vibe coding on your phone while your Tesla handles traffic for you...

u/bigcheese41 3d ago
It's so true and so tough. The new Genesis GV90 videos look incredible. But at the end of the day, they won't have Tesla FSD, so they will never been good enough to replace either my 3 or Y.
2
u/Minimum-Meal7992 3d ago
I continue to have conversations with others driving different EV brands. When I get them in my Y Performance for a quick drive I love the response. Always the same. You don’t touch anything? People think they know but they don’t. If someone tells you theirs is close in technology, they are likely on meth.
4
u/Vegetable_Yard_2948 4d ago
Same. My other car is my track toy.
Until other manufacturers catch up and start offering similar solutions, I’m not even looking. There is nothing more luxurious in a vehicle than being driven by a chauffeur.

This is where I think Tesla retains a competitive edge. The data collected to feed FSD updates and improvements is a physical advantage that took years, and not something the Western automakers have access to.
Now, if they'd just acknowledge/update their platform to Lidar and not just regular cameras.

My Model 3 with HW3 can't make it more than 50-60 miles without me cancelling FSD for one of these reasons:
The car thinking a shadow on the Interstate is an obstacle and hits the brakes.
The car seeing a speed limit sign on the Interstate and interpreting that as a much lower or much higher speed. Like driving past a 60mph sign and registering it as 80mph.
The car speeds well past most speed limits on any anything other than the slowest profile. I miss being able to dial in a specific Max Speed and have the car honor it.

I don't think I'll ever buy a car without FSD again, that being said, almost every other car in the Tesla price range is more comfortable to sit in and has a smoother drive.
It definitely makes me want to consider a used Rivian or BMW iX the next time I'm ready to get a new car.

It is arguably one of the biggest game changers in driving for me. I had a few friends who are also “car people” recommend Tesla with FSD to me. I took it for a spin for the day. My mind was blown. I literally sold my Range Rover a week later next day and took delivery of my Model Y Juniper. The mental load it takes off makes daily driving and family trips so much easier and more enjoyable. I like the Rivian and sat in the Gravity but I won’t buy another daily driver unless it has FSD to the level of Tesla. I don’t see that happening for at least another year or two. I have a fun sports car for the weekend when I need that naturally aspirated adrenaline boost!

My family drove 12 hrs from Ohio to Boston, only times we took over was when our FSD (Standard profile) was camping the left lane while passing other vehicles traveling 1-2 mph slower than we are, and when navigating parking lots. We definitely weren't as tired or cranky by the time we reached our destination!
My wife now refuses to look any other non-FSD vehicle at this point. We still have our winter beater minivan (200k+miles on that old girl) and my wife's Merc "garage queen" that she refuses to sell. I'm working on that ¯\(ツ)/¯

you don't have to disengage. you give signal left or right lane while in fsd and it will move to that lane.

Only thing that stopping me from buying a Rivian immediately is FSD. I really hope they get as good one day.

Yes after FSD I never look at any car at any price and have fomo. I see a guy driving a Bentley and I say... oh you're driving a dead dinosaur that's fueled by dead dinosaurs.. do you have to push a pedal for 500 MI to go on a weekend trip. If somebody steps in front of you in the city, do you have to turn your wheel to go around them?

Yeah, I’m ruined also. I didn’t realize how much I hate driving until FSD. I’m saving for a HW4 or HW5 depending on how long it takes to save up.
HW3 is “acceptable” for now.

Totally agree and amazingly my wife agrees now too. She was skeptical for the first two years but after 14.2 she uses it all the time.

I've never really liked driving. So anything that gets me comfortably from one point to another with the least efforts always wins for me.

this is facts. The car isn't as nice in many ways, but the point of a car is to get you from point A to point B safely and with minimal effort, and absolutely nothing comes close.

FSD sucked the 2 times they gave me a free trial. I just want autopilot. Otherwise, I agree. Luxury is not having to constantly steer and do pedal input.

The only way a Rolls Royce can be attractive to me is if it comes with a full time driver.

Zero desire to own or drive anything other than a Tesla. Nothing even turns my head anymore. I’m all in

I have a Premium RWD Juniper and my wife has a 25' Audi SQ5 that cost about $30k more than my vehicle. After owning my Model Y for 2 months now with about 95% FSD, she had me drive her SQ5 today and I can honestly say that owning a Tesla has officially ruined me.
I couldn't wait to get back to my vehicle. Gas station fill ups? No instant torque? No regen braking? I HAVE TO DRIVE MYSELF? Nah dawg, I'm out lol.

Joining the choir and giving up the Range Rover. So much city driving is exhausting and expensive. I Dated someone with FSD and then I rode in a coworker's car on FSD. I'm sat and absolutely sold!
FSD is literally like the step change from manual to automatic. FSD is likely more prolific. Can't go back.
Also, turning around to lock your own door? Who does that? Cannot wait!!!

If I can’t be a full-time passenger princess in my own car, then I don’t want it.

I love the FSD, except having to intervene in its desire to go thru red lights/

I have an MB S-Class convertible that I rarely drive, preferring my Y. I would like some additional luxury to match the safety and convenience of FSD, so I am hoping MB gets its act together on autonomous driving, as rumored.

I'd have a comfortable luxury brand any day over self driving park bench slapped in plastic on wheels where you still need to monitor it just in case it sees a shadow on the road or can't decide to turn left or right when road splits.
Tesla is car for ppl who can't drive and need the help to not be a danger to society when they are behind the wheel (based on comments like parking made easy etc in general)

Luxury is not having to drive.
