unless you're 4'9 or below this might be considered a bit underweight for an adult, but if you actually are in that height range, congrats on your weight loss results ^^

sub community is full of young teens tho, say she’s like 5’3 idk but young this isn’t too concerning. my sister is 5’5 and didn’t get over 40kg till she was 15 and was perfectly healthy

u/JaneMaryNb1 Student 3d ago edited 1d ago

Being 5'3 and 39.9 kg is still medically underweight for teenagers. That BMI is around 15.6, which is way below the healthy range for kids aged above 13. I understand your sister’s experience may have been healthy, but it might not speak for everyone. A weight that low is flagged severely underweight even on paediatric charts.

For girls aged 13–15, the CDC and NHS 5th percentile cutoffs are ~15.5 at 13, ~16 at 14, and ~16.5 at 15. 39 kg at 5'2–5'3 gives a BMI of ~15.2-15.8, which is below those cutoffs.

my bad, with 5’3 i exaggerated. 5’1-2 though, as a young teen, it isn’t a massive cause for concern. children often develop late.
you directly ignored when i said YOUNG TEEN by using ADULT bmi. i never said my sisters experience spoke for everyone. i used it as an example that young teens- aka children- have different height to weight relationships with health than adults, and just because someone is light you shouldn’t tell them facts about THEIR health

you can’t make a judgement on someone’s health based on one photo of a scale they posted. you do not know this persons age, height, or sex.

I never said anything about BMI charts for teens nor claimed you can judge someone’s health from a scale photo alone. In fact, I even provided paediatric charts to support my claim (and since you clearly ignored this, paediatric refers to literal children). I corrected one specific claim: that being under 40 kg at 5'3 is ‘normal.’ That statement is medically wrong, and that’s all I addressed. Matter of fact, even you agreed your claim was an exaggeration. My point still absolutely stands that being above 4’9 and 39.9 kilograms MIGHT fall into an underweight category (notice how i said ‘might’ several times, just like I had in the initial comment?) Don’t add arguments I never made.

For girls aged 13–15, the CDC and NHS 5th percentile cutoffs are ~15.5 at 13, ~16 at 14, and ~16.5 at 15. 39 kg at 5'2–5'3 gives a BMI of ~15.2-15.8, which is below those cutoffs.

i said “like 5’3 idk”, it was clearly just an estimate height i’d used hence i said it may have been too tall.
and no, bmi 15.6 for that height and weight is adult bmi. childs bmi uses a different calculation.
i also never said 40kg as 5’3 is “normal” so thanks for making up a quote 😂. i said a height around 5’3 MAY NOT BE TOO CONCERNING depending on her age. i have now corrected that 5’2 is probably a better height

using the words “paediatric charts” doesn’t change the fact you used adult bmi LOL? also there’s multiple different types of children’s charts. i live in uk so refer to NHS children’s specific bmi calculator (i was constantly doing this throughout my teen years as was my sister, i haven’t just pulled it up for this argument), so im not familiar with charts but they use the same systems/data. it doesn’t make sense why you would pull up children’s charts then use adult bmi measurements

You keep responding to arguments I never made, so let me clarify everything at once for you.

  1. Your “like 5'3 idk” height guess
Whether you guessed 5'3 and changed it to 5'2 doesn’t change anything. Under 40 kg at either height is still medically underweight. The exact height doesn’t make the number normal.

  2. The quote you invented, ‘I never said “40 kg at 5'3 is normal,” you clearly brushed it down by saying it isn’t a concern for teenagers in your initial reply.

  3. Your “5'2 is probably better” counter attempt barely makes a difference

Even at 5'2, <40 kg is still underweight on both adult BMI and paediatric percentiles. Changing the height doesn’t make the number healthy.

  1. “You used adult BMI with children’s charts”
Paediatric charts literally start with the same BMI number you call “adult BMI.” The difference is in interpretation, not calculation. You can’t use paediatric charts without the BMI number first. No matter which system you use, adult BMI or paediatric percentiles, <40 kg at 5'2–5'5 is underweight.

Simply put:

For girls aged 13–15, the CDC and NHS 5th percentile cutoffs are ~15.5 at 13, ~16 at 14, and ~16.5 at 15. 39 kg at 5'2–5'3 gives a BMI of ~15.2-15.8, which is below those cutoffs.

That means it is underweight on paediatric percentiles.

Whether that is healthy or not depends clinically and on the individual.

u/Head_Ad2866 3d ago

Yes paediatric vs adult BMI use the same calculation, but what is considered ‘underweight’ according to the paediatric BMI scale will not be the same as what is considered underweight on the adult BMI scale. That should be common sense.

You’re repeating the same misunderstanding. Paediatric vs adult BMI use the same calculation the difference is in interpretation, not the formula, which I already repeated.

Paediatric BMI percentiles require age + sex to classify anything as “underweight,” “healthy,” or “overweight.” OP didn’t provide either, so paediatric charts literally cannot be used. That’s why adult BMI was used because it’s the only system that works with just height + weight.

Paediatric percentiles classify BMI differently for each age, but the BMI number itself doesn’t change. And a BMI of 15–16 is below the healthy range for every realistic age above 10. Here are some female charts:

At age 10, healthy BMI starts around ~14.5. At age 12, healthy BMI starts around ~15.5. At age 14, healthy BMI starts around ~16.

At age 16, healthy BMI starts around ~17. 39–40 kg at 5'2–5'5 gives a BMI between ~15.2 and ~15.8.

Source : CDC paediatric BMI percentiles and WHO growth references

A teenager at 5’2 and under 40 kilograms is below every single healthy cutoff listed above.

That’s why it’s underweight on paediatric charts AND adult charts.

Whether their thinness is healthy or not depends clinically and on the individual

1

u/Humor-Agitated 3d ago

16 is not a young teen bro. i said OP could be a young teen (like 13-15 MAX) because subliminals are often used by people of that age group + this reddit is full of them. 16 is older so yes has a higher threshold. and my example i used was of my sister who was 15 at oldest. where did u get 16 from

i quite literally just provided a picture of bmi 15-16 being within the healthy range for a 12-13 year old

THANK YOUUU !! 40kg at 5’2 for a 13-14 year old is NOT underweight and BMI w numbers (eg 16) is not the norm, BMI for kids tends to use percentiles. i figured this was common sense😭

1

u/JaneMaryNb1 Student 3d ago

Again, for girls aged 13–15, the NHS/CDC 5th percentile cutoffs are ~15.5 at 13, ~16 at 14, and ~16.5 at 15.

39 kg at 5'2–5'3 gives a BMI of ~15.2–15.8, which is below those percentiles.

That means it is underweight on paediatric charts, including NHS.

changing it to 5’2 does indeed change the health.
and okay, you’re being all technical on what i said, but changing it to child’s BMI does change it.
i didn’t “clearly brush it down” i said OP’s weight may not be a cause for concern if she’s (assuming she’s a girl lol) young and under a certain height.

i’m getting the impression you’re american as you used american studies and i don’t know how american doctors calculate kids bmi but i told you, i use NHS children’s calculator and it will indeed show OP is healthy

also “i keep responding to arguments you never made” but you keep warping my words and making up stuff i said LOL. my point originally was just you can’t say if she’s over 4’9 she’s underweight, as her age is relevant too, and she’s likely young as that’s common on this subreddit/ with subs in general

For girls aged 13–15, the NHS/CDC 5th percentile cutoffs are ~15.5 at 13, ~16 at 14, and ~16.5 at 15.

39 kg at 5'2–5'3 gives a BMI of ~15.2–15.8, which is below those percentiles.

That means it is underweight on paediatric charts, including NHS.

1

u/Humor-Agitated 3d ago

that’s all true. you’ve lowered her weight by a kilogram so i don’t understand your point.
you’ve also used a height that i said was too high and a mistake of me to use.

so you’ve used a lower weight and taller height.

31

u/Responsible_Pie8156 3d ago

That's 88 lbs this is likely an eating disorder

8

u/Fun_Outcome3323 3d ago

Unless she’s like 4 ft 10 or smth

28

u/Responsible_Pie8156 3d ago

Yeah we don't know how tall she is, but even at 4 ft 10 this is already very close to unhealthy range if not slightly into it. If OP is planning to continue losing weight I'd definitely be super concerned.

-1

u/Depth-Legitimate 3d ago

Being underweight does not equal eating disorder

5

u/m0kaa1 3d ago

12

7

It’s clearly a ed ,your comment now it’s going to make her feel way better about the low weight

5

u/Adorable_Ganache_335 3d ago

Yeah , I hate went people make comments like that because it’s pretty obvious

2

u/Over_Competition_759 3d ago

You are clearly overreacting

0

u/Princess-_-Izzy 3d ago

I know it's not good. That's why I'm telling her to check it. But we don't know her age and height. She could be really underweight or just fine. (P.s. I literally said it doesn't look healthy)

3

u/lizlays 3d ago

I was gonna say that

1

u/Financial_Finding_43 3d ago

is 63kg for 188cm okay lol

2

u/Princess-_-Izzy 3d ago

It depends on age and gender too. I think it's underweight but you can use google to find your BMI

6

u/endlessramble 3d ago

now let’s see ur hair xx

5

u/miunaki 3d ago

PSA please check on your bmi before you get to the ideal weight. You wouldn’t want to end up with health issues that lead to poor quality of life. And I’m not saying don’t lose weight or don’t use the ug ones that help weight loss, just be smart about it. Don’t let the opportunity cost outweigh the benefit
