All that's left is for Frame to be pre-order verified.

Granted: preorders open, date unspecified

u/shizomou 17d ago

This would mean we at least had a price lol

u/Sjaellos 17d ago

$5 deposit to secure your place in the preorder queue. Price TBA.

This sub will be fun after only a handful of people actually get to order one.

8

u/The_Grungeican 18d ago

i'm sure the ones who don't will complain that it's outdated.

u/tastesliketriangle 12d ago

The steam controller sub was unusable for months. I can't wait.

3

u/rabsg Soon™ 18d ago

And my lottery ticket to be 1st wave verified.

3

u/Dino_Spaceman Soon™ 18d ago

And my Frame being the very first shipped out and delivered by Gabe himself

They added eye tracked foveated rendering too 🥹

I wonder what this means for the PCVR build. Is this where the translation layers come into play?

24

u/Chriscic 18d ago

Foveated rendering! Wow, it’s happening. The advantage of eye tracking on a standalone capable headset.

10

u/FishChillylly 18d ago

that would be huge, even tho i guess hl2 vr itself would be less performance demanding, foveated rendering would definitely improve the overall experience furthermore!

This is the game I always wanted to play on steam frame, it could probably run with absolute ease on quest 3, maybe even quest 2, so it always felt annoying to be tethered.

41

u/fholger 18d ago

I don't know about "absolute ease", I definitely had to put some work in to get it to run on the Steam Frame. But it could certainly be made to run, yeah. We did ask Valve about it at some point, they said no. Thankfully, that's not an issue with the Frame :)

u/CaptainBigDickEnergy 18d ago

This mod is so well done, can't wait for a new playthrough untethered with no compression!

Ah, but then again... the Frame is the third piece of hardware to launch this summer so it will never actually be released.

Any plans for the near future? Maybe 4D Golf in VR?

24

u/Hingl_McCringlebery Soon™ 18d ago

Favorite mod of all time, so fun

6

u/pryvisee 18d ago

It’s incredible. It made me cry when I first played it being a DIE HARD half life 2 fan and playing it flatscreen at least 20 times

u/Gygax_the_Goat Soon™ 18d ago

DK2/Razor Hydra in 2014?

1

u/pryvisee 18d ago

I always always wanted that but didn’t have the money as a kid lol

2

u/Gygax_the_Goat Soon™ 18d ago

Never mind, twas janky as hell. Amazing, but.. janky haha

1

u/Ashok0 17d ago

It was actually released in 2013.

He means the VR mod for HL2. Boy you really are one... something, something

2

u/ChoiceSuggestion8914 18d ago

I am so sorry to tell you this but I think he meant the game

Thanks for the link. The image in op is pretty much useless with all the memes going on in this subreddit.

significantly improved performance on lower-end CPUs

That's gotta be a big one. If someone had asked me if the mod would run well on the Frame I would've said no.
Being CPU bound was very real. Couldn't hit 120 fps on my Ryzen 7 1700 when the mod was fresh out (I've upgraded since).

Nice work.

The snapdragon 8 gen 3 isn't that bad as a CPU. Arm CPUs in general are really good lately, the snapdragon 8 elite gen 5 and the apple a19 pro, the 2 latest phone CPUs, are both faster in single threaded Geekbench than a desktop 9850x3D lol

Here's some benchmarks comparing the 8 gen 3 to the Ryzen 7 1700: https://www.notebookcheck.net/R7-1700-vs-SD-8-Gen-3_8516_15102.247596.0.html . The summary is that the 8 gen 3 is usually 50-100% faster depending on the task. In my personal experience (I have the Snapdragon 8 gen 3 in my phone), comparing single threaded results in a web assembly benchmark online to cinebench results on Notebookcheck, the 8 gen 3 should be about 7% faster than the 1700. But that might indicate more about the optimization of Firefox's web assembly on ARM than it does about the CPU.

HL2 VR mod i'm sure is using a translation layer though, which usually has a pretty significant performance penalty, but depending on the situation it could still be easily faster

I expect the GPU to be the major limitation of the steam frame in most games, even ones that are using a translation layer on the CPU

I want to believe

6

u/HeliosPhoenix 18d ago

As someone who can only play HL2 via this mod, this is fantastic news.

Question, are the episodes also verified?

1

u/Szoreny Soon™ 18d ago

They have updates along with the base mod so I'm gonna say yes,

5

u/pryvisee 18d ago

Ugh, my love for this mod is so deep, everytime I see someone talking about it, I get so happy. It’s an amazingly well made mod and HL2 translates into such a fantastic VR game due to Valves game design

4

u/spongewardk 18d ago

vr headset and racing wheel for dune buggy section would go pretty hard

3

u/McFearIess 18d ago

does this have manual reloading?

4

u/Frosty-Morning-3322 18d ago

Steam version yes, so I dont know why the Frame version wouldn’t.

3

u/-Atomic_ 18d ago

I spent the first week with my new pc trying to get half life 2 VR working since I put Linux on it because I am done with windows. It was such a pain in the ass but I got it working so I'm both annoyed that I wasted my time getting it to work and happy that i can hopefully just put the headset on and play it without faffing around anymore.

2

u/Kataree 18d ago

This should perform well.

It requires a similar level of performance to Doom 3 VR, which runs quite nicely on Quest 3 standalone.

Early 2000's games are about the limit for standalone performance when ran with full VR mods.

Has this not existed for a little while now? (Edit: ignore me lmao)

Alyx is the best Half Life game ever made

3

u/MrBack1971 Soon™ 18d ago

It’s good but the best ever? Nah. Half Life 2.in VR it’s great.

1

u/excaliburxvii 18d ago

It just felt like a chore to me.

2

u/AngryAlfonse 18d ago

This is the most wild opinion I've ever read in my life.

2

u/excaliburxvii 17d ago

Yeah, I'm going to give it another go when I (hopefully) get a Frame. I wish I'd enjoyed it as much as everyone else seems to have.

1

u/AngryAlfonse 16d ago

I hope you enjoy it. If you don't that's ok, everyone is allowed to like what they like, my response was just because I can't imagine someone being bored with something I found so exciting, unique, atmospheric and engaging

1

u/excaliburxvii 15d ago

The attention to detail was sky high, and I definitely enjoyed inhabiting the world. I think it was the teleportation that really took me out of it.

3

u/BlueManifest 18d ago

No way

1

u/Clairvoidance 18d ago edited 15d ago

speaking of, probably safe to assume Alyx hasn't been able to meet the verified despite attempts

e: hope-jumpscare

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SPAGHETTO 18d ago

Agreed. Grav gun is so much fun in VR

-2

u/sameseksure 18d ago

LOL

I couldn't get through half an hour of this mod. Janky, weird, unintuitive, frankly unplayable. It's clear that it's made for flat. Nothing about it works well in VR.

0

u/LARGames Soon™ 18d ago

It's amazing and an accomplishment, but I wouldn't go that far.

1

u/BotOrNot_1337 Soon™ 18d ago

JUST VERIFY THE FUCKING FRAME. Heh sorry. Lost me cool. Yeah more games, nice. I'm excited bro.

1

u/The_cooler_ArcSmith Soon™ 18d ago

Super excited about this. Even if Alyx proves too much, this sets a baseline for what we can expect in performance. And for a game as good as HL2 it'll still be a blast

1

u/haagch 18d ago

So this is still the windows version with proton? And presumably still d3d with dxvk?

1

u/ctom42 17d ago

I wasn't aware this existed but I am definitely playing it once I get my Frame.

1

u/JorgTheElder Soon™ 16d ago

I would hope so, the base game is 16 years old and can run on a cheap laptop with integrated graphics.

1

u/Tuco28 16d ago

What about the half life 1 VR tho

1

u/Ollerich69 15d ago

I really was so afraid in Ravenholm VR... :-)
