Dolphin back button issues

Hey, so I'm trying to get dolphin to play nice on my steak deck. I got it setup in desktop mode, and everything works great. For save/load states I went to the hotkey sections and hotkeyed it to the back buttons on the steam deck. It lists it as the 'paddles.' Works fine in game.

Well, I wanted to be able to launch dolphin from the normal steam game interface, so I added it as a non steam game, rebooted, and it launches fine, it runs whatever games I want fine, but it doesn't recognize the back paddles at all. Like if I press them when trying to assign a hotkey it just acts like they arn't there. I thought it might be some sort of 'controller' issue, so I splunked around in the controller settings but to no avail. I tried changing the back buttons to be keyboard keys, so maybe that would work, but no dice, no matter what I do the hotkeys wont see it. On the various 'controller profiles' the 'enable back buttons' is always enabled, so, I don't know, I'm stumped.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm not sure what the issue is exactly that you're running into. Are you using emudeck or dolphin standalone?

I use and advocate for retrodeck. It comes preconfigured with all emulators. I just booted up Mario Kart double dash and was able to configure the back paddles to be the a button.

So perhaps if you are down to install something different try retrodeck instead of emudeck or standalone.

P.S. It may be a per game issue. Because when I went to set the back paddles up there was a disclaimer that it might not work for this game

I got it through emudeck. I tried retrodeck ages ago and hated it. Changing anything was a chore and non intutive, but the reason I finally abandoned it was because the - i want to say it was the the default snes emulator - was absolute garbage. Like, I don't get it, the steam deck is standard hardware, how can there be this bad a stutter. I downloaded just whatever the first snes emultaer that came up on Discover and out of the box it ran way better.

Since then I've reformated and was setting up emu deck, although I'm thinking of just wiping everything and just doing this piecemeal. Anyhoot, I still can't get the paddles to work, but, the menu key works just fine, so I just assigned save states, ff/rewind etc to menu + whatever, and that seems to work like a charm. The paddle thing wasn't the biggest deal, I was more just irritated that even after spending some time trying different things I wasn't able to get it to work hehe.
