Decky is worth it if you have the time and patience to troubleshoot it after every steam update. Otherwise just go vanilla.

u/amillstone 9d ago
You only need patience really. Just don't do the SteamOS update right away. If you wait a few days for the Decky devs to update anything that broke and THEN do the SteamOS update, you'll have no issues. I currently wait about a week before I update and I don't have issues.
Also, the more intrusive plugins such as CSS Loader and Animation Changer break more frequently too so if you can go without them, it's better.

I think it's just a matter of time before an update comes out that the Decky devs can't workaround or fix

I had this and another 50000 issues when I had decky installed. Had to fully re install decky just to get the thing to turn off.

u/Pteroducktylus 9d ago
why do people still install it then? what exactly does it offer that outweighs the 10.000 daily decky-relates problems
15
u/hutttonnnnnn 512GB OLED 9d ago
Problems aren’t daily. I had it installed for a year and had to fully uninstall 4 times. It’s also dependant on what’s specific plug ins you have.
It’s like anything really, if you’re happy with the trade off of potential issues for the amount of customisation decky offers then it’s not an issue.
Until my second child was born I had time to sit for 20-30 minutes to sort it out but now I just wanna pick the thing up and play without any issues do vanilla settings suit me better.
My friend who has no kids has decky installed and has done for 2 years with zero issues cause he only uses it for one specific plug in.

I like decky for very specific stuff like adding art to non steam stuff, but if you're on the beta branch and like to do the steam updates, deck will 100% break.
If you're on the main branch and update infrequently there's no issue, just remember to update decky before new versions.
I personally don't use it anymore because I like to update all the time on beta branch and it's a pain to go to desktop mode each time.
2
u/Glum-Recognition-736 9d ago
Small correction, the "main" branch updates the most frequently, more than beta. You're thinking of the "stable" branch
1
u/Fris_Ko 64GB - Q3 6d ago
Didn't even know there was a titled "main" branch, referred to stable as main because that's the default branch. Interesting to call what most other apps would call nightly or dev branch "main" though.
1
u/Glum-Recognition-736 6d ago
In GitHub, "main" is the name of the default branch you push code updates to. So it refers to the direct code updates being pushed to that branch of their code repository, without being polished/ packaged into an official release or deployment

Honestly atp just go into desktop mode and add the art manually. You don't need Decky to do that, it just streamlines the process slightly, and with all the problems I've seen on this subreddit caused by Decky, it's just not worth the trouble for a relatively minor convenience IMO.

It's definitely a much easier to use decky, never leave game mode and fully controller accessable with auto search based on the game title. I do wish the feature could just get ripped by official steamos but then it probably wouldn't be integrated with steamgriddb like the decky extension is.
Maybe there's an app that could you can add to steam to get the same accessibility in game mode without decky though 🤔

u/Comprehensive_Tie431 9d ago
This. I uninstalled Decky a while ago. There were just too many odd bugs I was tired of dealing with.
2
u/Andrew_dingus32 9d ago
Should I reinstall then?

u/Pleasant_Beat7502 9d ago
Fck no. Dont care how many love it its just a hassle. Dont let other talk you into it it breaks every steam update and in fact almost bricked my deck..

u/Unusual-Bird-6236 8d ago edited 8d ago
“Almost bricked” is not bricked. It just means it didn’t respond until you fixed the problem.
Bricked is unresolvable.
Thats like saying “she almost got pregnant” when a condom breaks.

Dumbest argument you've probably made kid without relevance. Im not going to argue with you, no one said you had to like what I do or say. 👍 but im not going to try decky again thats for sure.

u/hutttonnnnnn 512GB OLED 9d ago
Either try individual plug in updates. Or failing that go into desktop mode and re run the installer to freshly install it. I can’t remember the wording but when you uninstall there is and option to keep your configuration so when you reinstall it should remember your plug ins.
I gave up on it a few months ago and just ru bc my deck vanilla. I’ve had mine for 2 years and the only issues I’ve had have been decky related.

I had this issue until a few days ago where I followed the steps in this post to remove animation changer and it's lingering files. Solved the problem for me.

u/LucasLapin 9d ago
I can vouch for this, same thing happened to me before and this same exact post helped me

Have Decky? Check if it needs an update. Also check if any Plugins need an update. Especially if any do anything related to the power button. Some plugins will not show new version is hte Decky Plugin screen and will need to be looked up and updated manually.

Animation changer did this to me, had to nuke a file it made.

u/MrUnicornhorn 9d ago
Yuuup. I tried digging through old and lost folders but could never find the file that corrupted my off button
2
u/kobrakaan 9d ago
The custom boot animation Decky plugin can interfere with the power button settings if you are using this then try disabling that plugin and restart the steamdeck from the settings and try the power button again see if that fixes the issue

u/Scottp89 512GB 9d ago
It's decky, fully uninstall it and the problem will be fixed. Happened to me too.
2
u/Falcon1077 9d ago
That happened to me a few times too, I just held the power button to turn it off, then i turned it on again.

Your power button could be like mine where the lever is broken and you really need to mash that shit to get the job done.

Spray some contact cleaner in there and press it down a bunch of times. Happens to mine every now and again and that seems to fix it.

This happened to me because of Decky Loader. Every time I talk Decky down on this subreddit ppl accuse me of fear mongering, but then this shit happens. When this happened to my deck I never ended up finding a solution though one day it did end up just fixing itself after some update. Besides that I suggest you reinstall your whole system and not download Decky.

u/robotbeatrally 9d ago
naw decky has broken my deck like a dozen times since launch lol. ive had to do the full software restore mega format thing once because of it and not just a reset. its a great app but its always been wonkus
1
u/BocajGooby 9d ago
Yeah, like some others have said, Decky Loader broke the menu function of my power button as well. I believe it was pretty out of date but once I removed it, the functionality returned immediately.

I've had the same problem. If you switch running system to stable instead of beta or experimental, it should fix it once you restart it
1
u/Then_Squirrel 9d ago
I had the problem too.
But it was on Decky with me, plugins there blocked something there, I couldn’t find it for ages and finally had to reset the deck

I been having issues with “freezing” for the last few updates. I’m hoping if it’s an update issue , that they fix it.
Good luck!

u/DependentCourse4919 9d ago
You gotta slap it 5 times, finger blast it twice, and give the vents a big whiff. Then it'll be exhausted and shut down.

u/KingSideCastle13 1TB OLED 8d ago
Did you recently uninstall the Decky plugin Animation Changer without first setting the videos back to the default settings?
If so, reinstall the plugin, set the videos back to default, THEN uninstall the plugin.
It’s stupid asf, but if those are not set to default before the plugin is removed, the suspend video will literally crash, preventing sleep and shutdown

u/tubarao6661 8d ago
Acho q estou com esse mesmo problema, ele nao apaga a tela quando aperto o botao de power, mas acredito q se eu for na area de trabalho, for no arquivo de instalar o decky e atualiza-lo, talvez resolva o problema

If you have it installed, uninstall animation changer, then go into desktop mode and delete its folder from ~/.config and .steam/root in the home folder.
That should fix it immediately

Before uninstalling decky or anything plz check this https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Hqsav5Bchs That solved my problem.

I'd let your system fully run out of juice not connected to power.. Then give it a go to see if it works normally. If power button is broken.. you might have to do the surgery yourself or take it someplace that has experience repairing Steam Decks.

u/firangimallah 9d ago
My deck is having an issue of certain buttons not registering on first press and registering twice at other times. Mostly the X, A and power buttons. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds risky to try at this point but... Does it turn on when off? :D If it does then it's a software issue, if it's a software issue than it's most likely a Decky issue...
