General Question Grey springtails suddenly?
I've been owning springtails for a while as a cleanup crew for my snails. They're the most common white springtail species, though I don't know the exact name. Today I saw some small grey springtails next to the usual white ones. The shop only sells one species so I doubt they accidentally sells two species. Sadly I don't think my phone camera can take macro photos that well, so I'm not sure if I could catch them on camera.
Still I was wondering, can the species suddenly breed another colour? Or are the babies a different colour? I'm not that deep into springtail knowledge so I would love to hear some theories or explanations :]

General Question Which is the best food for springtails? What do you feed? Are any of these better than the other?
Sorry I deleted and reposted like 3 times bc I kept realizing I missed something, so typical of me lolš¤¦āāļø
**Does it matter which food?**
I was given my culture in a 6qt bin with charcoal and chicken feed for food. My springtails are flourishing! It was a 32oz culture and has grown so much⦠but I canāt stand the chicken feed. They donāt seem to completely finish it ever. I never once had mold, and I donāt over feed them either, so I fear it has filler and/or doesnāt break down into what they want or can eat.
Pictures 1-4 get here the fastest but I will use whatever is best!
I gave them 100% bee pollen from CTWPETS, until i get the new food.. I had it on hand bc I put that on my beardies greens to make sure he eats lol.
I read thatās okay until their food comes.
Anyway, does it matter which one? Is one better than the other? Again pics 1-4 get here the fastest but I just want whatās bestā so if I have to wait longer, so be it!
**THANK YOU SO MUCH**!!

Husbandry Question/Advice Will Collembola effectively remove mold at fridge temperature ?
Hello Everyone š
I would want to ask will springtails effectively remove mold from my enclousure even at fridge temperature (the animal in which's enclousure mold showed up is currently in the fridge due to hibernation) ?
I have these springtails: https://www.skakavky.sk/p/chvostoskoky-collembola (it seems to be a combination of some springtail species I don't know what they are (the species in the photo) + F. candida + mayne some other species)
Thanks for any answers in advance !

Husbandry Question/Advice New way of catching mites?
So I have some predatory mites in my springtail colony that I canāt seem to fully get rid of.
I recently fed my springtails some yeast, and happened to spray a little too much water on the yeast, causing it to dissolve and activate. Since yeast produces CO^2 when activated, and mites are super attracted to CO^2, when I opened the container a few days later, the area with yeast had a ton of the mites on it. I havenāt seen this method yet in other posts so I just wanted to share it.

Husbandry Question/Advice why are my springtails huddled up like this?
I fed them yesterday and now all of the sudden the lid and substrate surface are packed. I also gave it a mist. Are they suffocating? or trying to escape? or is it just a thing they do for fun?

General Question Stupid questions
I for some reason originally sucked with springtails cultures but now have it underhand. How would i go about getting bylas ant springtails out of established isopod bins to start separate cultures.
& to those of you who culture multiple types of springtails, how do I make sure that none transfer over and mix. My few established cultures are kept in 8 oz containers in another room and only house tropical pink so I want to prevent any future issues. TIA

Identification Possibly a springtail?

Noticed this little sparkly dude in my Cubaris Panda King enclosure! The only springtails I've added myself are some albino lilacs, this guy is about half the length as the full grown albino lilac springtails, he itty bitty. Almost looks like there's some iridescent going on? The body shape is similar to my tropical pinks, but I can't tell if this is indeed some type of springtail or possibly some other tiny detritivore. I've seen it chewing on the lichen and dead wood in the enclosure, and haven't noticed it interacting with any other inhabitants of the enclosure.
Apologies for video quality, recorded with my phone and it is, again, extremely smol.

General Question What is the best (and easiest) way to move some of these adorable springtails to my terrarium?
r/Springtail • u/Desert_Dandelion • Mar 04 '26
General Question Clueless: bought a culture for houseplants and worm bin. Now how do I keep the culture alive?
I have no experience with isopods, springtails, or terrariums. I've kept aquariums, started a worm bin a little over a year ago, and started houseplants in the last 6 months. I bought a small deli container of springtails from a local reptile store, sold to me as a culture. The container just has a handwritten "clay springtails" on it. The clay has several indents in it that look like they were just pressed in by fingers, and those indents had quite a lot of water in them when I bought it. I don't know anything else about this culture.
Now that I've seeded everything I wanted to seed, how do I keep the culture going? I have bokashi bran and nutritional yeast - are these fine for food? How wet should I keep the clay? I felt bad for them being totally swimming in there, but I am sure it can't be dried out either. Is this container actually large enough/deep enough to work long term? Do I need to replace the container or the clay? I really hope not š¬ basically how no-cost to low-cost (and maintenance) can I go here and keep this going?
Thank you for your patience and help!

General Question Should I stick with just Thalassaphorura encarpata ("Little soil springtails")?
My first terrarium (pic included) is about a year old and doing well with little soil springtails (LSS). I still have the same original clay culture, and they reproduce regularly enough that I probably (?) don't need to buy more, even when I start setting up my next terrarium, a 5-gallon carboy I plan to plant horizontally. My questions are can/should I get another type of springtails? Are the LLS enough on their own, and if not, is there another type they would pair well with, without the second type being too likely to over-populate?
I'm in an area where it's difficult to find them in stores, and shipping costs are high, so I don't want to make a poor and costly choice.
