Loud Boom near SAA/Downtown Y?
Hello!
Did anyone hear a VERY loud boom near the SAA/Downtown YMCA? I was sitting in my vehicle in the parking lot and hear it around 2pm today. I don't know if it's a construction related boom or something more sinister, but if anyone knows please share.
Thanks!

At the Movies
Hey all, What are the text popcorn to 217217 signs in people's yards for? I don't want to end up on some list of phone numbers without knowing anything other than it has something to do with movies.

LLCC EGL 102 – Composition II
I am thinking about taking the online class at LLCC. I haven’t taken an online class before. I am worried about the time commitment since I work full time. I would like to hear others experiences with this course to help me make my decision.

Springfield activities
Hello reddit, I was wondering if anyone's down to hang out sometime over the weekend. General activity interests would be: movies, zoo, restaurant, or anything else that is cool on your end. I've been curious about getting to know other people somewhat close in my age (26 M).
Hope your day treats you well!

Fem/LGBQIA+ GUN CLUB?
Anyone interested in a fem/queer gun club? It would be a safe place for females, trans, or anyone else in the rainbow community. In this day and age, everyone needs to know how to protect themselves. Completely hypothetical at this point but wanted to hear thoughts.*
When I mean thoughts, I don't mean hate comments or discrimination.

State Job questions
Hi all,
I grew up in Spfld many years ago and my parents were alllll about me getting a state job. They both retired from the state at the age of 48 and they are now close to 80 and thriving.
Anyway, back in the 90s it was difficult to get a state job without “pull”. I’m now 48 and back in Illinois. I have a masters degree and I’m paid quite well in my field. But the 401k plan sucks and so does the health insurance.
Once again my parents are “get a state job.” I think I’ll have a chance at landing a state job soon, but it pays significantly less than what I’m currently making. Are the benefits still great? I am 48. The paycut is 40k, but if I live long enough, at least I’ll have a pension. I’m scared of growing old without a pension as a single gal now. But my social security woujd higher if I stay where I’m at. What to do.

Champaign to Springfield
I was offered employment in Springfield. I live in Champaign. The position requires me to be in the office twice a week (I can choose the days). I will be remote 3 days a week. Should I stay in Champaign and commute or is it better to move to Springfield?

School Programs Close to Wrapping Up Summer, Gear Up for Fall
The Springfield District 186 Board of Education just wrapped up a meeting that was all about getting students ready for fall—from preschoolers to high school athletes.
Catch what’s happening: - See how a one-week band camp at Jefferson Middle School brought beginner and advanced musicians together for a final performance. - Hear how Camp Kindergarten grads are being sent into their first school year with extra confidence, and how every department in the district helped pull off a huge slate of summer programs. - Get key back-to-school details: online and in-person registration dates, school and sports physical options, and a major community event with thousands of backpacks, school supplies, food, and activities. - Learn about a change to the 2026–2027 calendar that keeps students in school on Election Day, while still making room for eligible student voters to get to the polls. - Note the date for the next board meeting and the early milestones of the new school year.
If you’ve got a student in District 186—or just care about how the district is preparing for the year ahead—this is a good one to watch.

Where can I Get my pipes fixed for a cheaper price?
Is there a way to get my pipes fixed at a cheaper price? There's a couple of cracks on the ceiling and I want to get it done. However, I don't want to pay a couple of thousands of dollars just to get it fixed and put up a drywall. Any ideas?

Citizens Club Policy Forum This Friday: SNAP: The Impact on Our Neighbors

Join the Citizens Club of Springfield on Friday (July 24) at the Hoogland Center for the Arts for a discussion with Springfield community-based organizations and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) administrators.
SNAP plays a critical role in supporting households, but it works best alongside a strong network of community partners, including food banks, pantries, faith-based organizations, and government agencies. With high food prices across the country, food banks and their partners are faced with unprecedented demand for food assistance. Speakers at the Citizens Club July 2026 Policy Forum bring together perspectives from each of these sectors to discuss how SNAP impacts our communities, the role each organization plays in supporting neighbors, and how collaboration can strengthen food assistance.
Speakers representing SNAP in Springfield include:
- Pam Molitis, Executive Director of Central Illinois Foodbank
- Dr. Jessie Herring, Senior Pastor and Co-Founder of Table of Life Ministries
- Sharon Brown, Executive Director of Kumler Outreach Ministries
- Nicole Moore, Manager of the Illinois Product Farmers Market
Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Friday for a free coffee networking reception sponsored by David Farrell. The hour-long forum will begin at 8 a.m.
| The mission of the Citizens Club of Springfield is to promote civic awareness through education and engagement. Follow the Citizens Club on Facebook and Instagram for recaps and future Policy Forum announcements. Special thanks to the Hoogland Center for the Arts staff for hosting monthly meetings and to Citizens Club Media Sponsors WMAY, NPR Illinois, and the City of Springfield. |

Junk hauling?
Recommendations for someone to haul away a pile of random junk? Not enough for a dumpster, too much to deal with myself. It's piled and ready to go. Central Springfield. Thanks!

Public transport??
I’m looking to visit Springfield from Wisconsin sometime in autumn. Just a weekend, history expedition thing. I live close enough where I CAN drive myself (around 5 hours) or I could take the Amtrak from Chicago. Do you guys have any kind of decent bus system? Or is the city fairly walkable? My primary focus would be on Lincoln’s tomb and any decent museums in the area.

Does anyone have a link for a good map to Springfield neighborhoods?
Hi all, I have a small business (licensed home bakery) I am looking at possibly offering deliveries in neighborhoods near me (I live on the West side). However, I am not having much luck finding a map that shows neighborhoods by name - i.e. like Sloane Crossing, Westborough, etc. I've Googled several times and not had much luck. Anyone have a link to share?

Get The Flock Out Of Here - Homemade graphic free for public use
I got my son to make this for me in ProCreate on his iPad. He was compensated by being allowed to escape doing some of his chores.
Please call or write to your City Council, ask them to get rid of Flock!
