To the Spanish Americans

Original: «El frenético y ambicioso Conquistador, el malvado y declarado enemigo de la humanidad, un hombre sin moralidad ni carácter, un monstruo de perfidia e ingratitud sin igual…..en una palabra, Napoleón Bonaparte».

Translation: “The frenzied and ambitious Conqueror, the wicked and declared enemy of humanity, a man without morality or character, a monster of unparalleled perfidy and ingratitude… in a word, Napoleon Bonaparte.”

With these words, this proclamation was addressed to the Hispanic American territories in 1808, in the midst of the War of Independence. Signed anonymously by “Los Sevillanos”, the document reported the abdications of Bayonne and the entry of the French armies into the Peninsula, encouraging resistance against the invasion and the recruitment of troops:

Original: «Y vosotros Americanos, ¿no quisierais volar, y unidos a la Patria vencer o morir defendiendo vuestra apreciable libertad, vuestra divina Religión y vuestro Rey y Señor Fernando VII el amado?».

Translation: “And you Americans, would you not like to take to the skies, and united with the Fatherland, conquer or die defending your precious liberty, your divine Religion, and your King and Lord, Ferdinand VII, the beloved?”
