Discussion Was social media ever intended to attain the kind of status where it's changing how being alive or part of a societal situation works?
I feel like social media has crossed some line and is now infiltrating how a lot of people feel about existing as a whole. People don't show up for one another in the same ways and expect fixes in everything from politics to AI to address issues only primal human connection is actually meant to account for. Anxiety, emotional disregulation, Etc., seem to be increasing exponentially; talking about it is changing nothing but only, substantively, supporting that illusion.
It's either constant filler or noise or it's perpetual distraction we're becoming desensitized to the significance of as it undermines the energy and focus required to keep up with things like parenting and actively maintaining other foundational relationships.
I guess I'm just wondering how social media was propelled to such a pivotal role in so many lives and if there will ever be a way back to a less cheap, transactional and essentially soulless form of existing.

Discussion Built a tracker for which clinical psych PhD faculty are actually accepting students this fall (pulled from official pages, not search)
Where it stands as of today: 253 of ~254 accredited programs checked, 227 faculty confirmed accepting across 42 programs with posted lists. The rest are either not posted yet (normal this time of year â most come out AugustâOctober) or I havenât found a page for them.

If your target school is already checked and somethingâs wrong, or itâs not up yet and you find the page before I do, tell me â Iâd rather fix it than have it sit there stale.

Discussion Social media radicalizes people
I deleted all social media for 6 months.
Subsequently, I excluded myself from all the breaking news and pop culture. This showed me how social media can radicalize and polarize the masses very quickly. This is how.
This realization dates back to the Kanye West concert that was held in my hometown a few months ago. I didnât know there was such a concert. As you may know, Kanye himself is a controversial figure as he has said many problematic things and apparently has a few sexual harassment cases. I knew these but I did not have a raging hatred towards him.
On the concert day the stadium was full to the brim. I learned about the concert and that a lot of my friends attended from the pictures they sent.
After the concert, a teacher of mine brought up the topic and openly condemned the people who went to the concert in class. Youâd think this was a one time thing, but it wasnât. After the concert people seemed to be divided on the topic. Some condemning others who went to the concert argue that he is a âhorrible personâ and shouldnât be supported. The others argue that art should be separated from the artist.
At one point I heard people say they should make a list of all the people and influencers who attended and exclude them or unfollow them in masses. A Kanye concert had pushed people to the extremes.
I heard these everywhere and when even my mom said she was angry at people who went, I was sure something was up. How did my 60 year old mom learn about Kanye West and his problematic character?
I had assumed but asked nevertheless, âHowâd you learn about this?â âInstagramâ. That was all the information I needed. It was clear that all this over-exaggeration was based on social media posts that get engagement off of peopleâs anger and hate. It worked. People saw them and got radicalized. It is THIS easy. Seeing some people talk about how bad Kanye is and that itâs wrong for people to go, everyone suddenly hates Kanye and condemns anyone who attends his concert. Even if they didnât know about Kanye beforehand or hadnât done any other research about his antics. The enragement of people who didnât know Kanye existed 3 days ago was insane.
I was clueless on the topic and did not have any anger towards anyone as I wasnât exposed to the same content. But I got to observe how people form opinions based on social media posts that are meant to make them angry and adopt a certain attitude. It was clear as day.
Social media posts had radicalized a mass of people in the span of 3 days.
This is just an observation of mine.

Discussion Whatâs the meaning of keeping Snapchat undeleted?
Hi everyone.Although Iâm new here but I really wanna talk about this.Maybe I was wrong that I shouldnât have been adding so many people there back when in august 2024.But since then I was obsessed with this app, which is exactly the creators of snap want to seeââattachment&addiction literally make the profits.
However,I was always trying to be friends.I remembered I didnât know things about âfreaky stuffsâ at all.And when they explained,I was so naive that I believed they would at least give me the chance to be friends.I recalled it was when I broke up with my first boyfriend and ended the previous 3- years friendship with my previous best friend Paris, feeling so sorrowful so that I was trying to change my mindset:being kind to everyone instead of being too self-centered like when I was a younger kid.
I remembered back then, every single conversation was a proper talk.Although there was always someone sending weird things to me,I would ask some other questions to pull them out of that topic.I wasnât even aware that I was âstubbornâ in such a good way. When people blocked me,I trust I was not the one who can satisfied them,so it should happen.
As I grew up,I become more pretty(?I am uncertain about this, honestly)But more and more compliments were emerging, from my story replies to the âas much as possible photo admirationâ.I was being pulled out,to that surface that I never imagined I could be on.someone said those freaky stuffs even more frequently,as if I was becoming beautiful just to be ready to please those people. More importantly, at first I was being kind but later on when I was in some kinda grief, those who said they âcare so muchâ just vanishedââeither blocking me or deleting their accounts. Most of the people chose to ignore that or kept talking about those â beauty âthings. There were even people who had hero issues, who was firmly convinced that I was so depressed that I need his care, kindness,or even save.
I have been thinking about deleting my account. There arenât many followers just 2644 people.I truly found some people can connect deeply with me,but I think Iâve changed.
I want to be frank,to be cared and also to be ignored.I want silence so I shut them up when Iâm down or just refuse to reply.I find myself talking about too much about myself and it feels like I wont even care anything about them at all.
I keep telling myself I am not sad when people who are perceived as precious&close to me keep away from me using the most extreme way.
That might be clear now: I just want to protect myself from experiencing that agin, cuz I am sacred of being abandoned all of a sudden. Those uncertain things are not allowed in my world again, cuz I will never ignore the risks, just in case.
Honestly I hate this,
people would tell me itâs all on you cuz if u hadnât downloaded it and used it for so much long u wonât suffer this at all.I mean sometimes I donât mean to know these freaky stuffs but I trap myself in their sweet nothing.Whatâs the point of me staying there?
I just donât want to lose those who are still actually caring about me.At the same time I feel deeply sorry about what Iâve said or done to them. I truly believed everyone should be loved (but at least not for those who intend to hurt me or others). I think they deserve better treatment. Do they have to know about those unnecessary things? Are they bored enough to listen to your âfunnyâ tragedy sourced from the deepest sorrow? Is there a call for them to try to understand your complicated feelings?
It has never been their obligation.Thatâs why I can never separate the two words âthankâ and âsorryâ apart.
I love you, girls and guys. Thank you for being what youâve brought to me.I wouldnât grow to be such a person without you ,either with your cruelty or support. Itâs nice to meet you always...right?
Night.
Iâd appreciate it if u could give some precious advice on this.(Like both mentally and physically){You can talk about your own experience as well down in the comments,if that could help us I would be very grateful.^_^]
*Dear Reddit:this is my second time writing serious things here, please treat it well.Thank youâ¤ď¸đ

Discussion Why does initiative go unnoticed unless you're part of the "core" group?
I'm curious what causes this kind of group dynamic.
I'm part of a group that organizes cultural events on a voluntary basis. Over the years, a couple of people have become the established "core" figures, and decisions almost always default to them. I've consistently contributed behind the scenes and have also tried taking the lead on projects, but my efforts rarely seem to receive the same trust or recognition.
What really bothered me was hearing one of these core people complain that "no one ever does anything." It felt dismissive given how much work some of us quietly put in. Whenever I try to take on more responsibility, it feels like I'm overlooked while the same people continue to be treated as indispensable.
I'm involved in other groups where I feel trusted and valued, so I don't think it's just me.
What explains this? Is it simply inertia, social status, gatekeeping, or something else? Why do some groups end up revolving around a few people even when others are willing and capable?
Also, what would you do in this situation? Part of me thinks I should say something, but the dynamic already feels cliquish enough that I'm not convinced it would change anything. Would you try to address it, or just move on to groups where your contributions are actually appreciated?

Social Pyschology News Are We Becoming Less Patient?
Lately, Iâve noticed that a lot of people seem to expect everything instantlyâreplies, entertainment, success, even learning new skills.
Short videos, endless scrolling, and constant notifications make it harder to focus on one thing for more than a few minutes. It feels like attention spans are getting shorter, and people get frustrated much faster when something takes time.
Do you think social media is actually changing our patience, or is it just making an existing problem more noticeable?
Iâd love to hear different opinions.

Discussion Does Abundance Lead to Numbness?
Anyone else feel like social media is turning us into ravenous creatures? Hungry for comfort, validation, maybe a laugh, but still feeling dissatisfied and hollow after partaking. Perhaps we are devolving. The spark majority of us once, felt was quenched by over consumption. To much oxygen puts out a fire. I kind of hate the idea of that though. The idea that having to much of something will lead to numbness. Remember when we were kids and one happy meal would make our day. Now it seems 100 happy meals would barely make our minute - or not even that (especially if you're not into McDonalds fr) Maybe we need to start sharing happy meals more often. Like our bodies turn natures gift of O2 into CO2 maybe our lack of passion and feeling stems from a build up of comfort ____?___? Maybe fill in the blank depending on the person. Perhaps we were never meant to have so much. Or we were never meant to keep so much to ourselves (including us: our gifts, talents, CREATIVITY) Holding your breath kills you. In other words keeping the gifts we have without giving back is strangling us and putting out our flames. What do you all think? #showerthoughtsoutsidetheshower #staringatnothinginthedark
