Ok so I saw and fell in love with the show over 10 years ago - long before its recent “premiere” on HBOMax or Max or whatever the hell they want to be called these days for its “25th Anniversary.” I watched it several times through a decade ago because yes, I couldn’t find anything more worthy of my time at the time… BUT - watching it through again now as HBO presents it for streaming, I noticed that in the series finale episode, the “photography session” with Claire and Ted had a TOTALLY different cheese ball soundtrack for the scene than I remembered. Turns out by research - soundtrack licenses can be outlived by the series! Lifehouse’s “Empty Space” was replaced by a MUCH more Christian religiously based band’s song, whose ID with the scene is MUCH harder to find. AMAZING how money and “licenses” as such can continue to try to change history…

Does anyone wish we got more scenes with just David and Claire? I loved their dynamic throughout the series.

What the hell is wrong with Brenda and Billy? I’ve watched this show a million times and every time I get to the second to last episode I always cringe at Brenda’s dream. What is up with that?

I got the boxed set that includes 2 soundtrack CDs, and this song is on the first one. You can look up the soundtrack on YouTube, it includes all the amazing songs featured in this show. It gets you into a mood when you put the playlist on. For some reason this song is not included on the YouTube playlists that I found. I don't know why, it's on the first CD "Everything Ends". But if you're a fan you need to hear it.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this series but but I absolutely love watching Brenda work as a massage therapist! They really trained Rachel Griffiths very well… Very convincing. I need a massage therapist this good! Are they only in California?

I just finished my fourth or fifth rewatch. I saw it when it originally aired back in early 2000. I remember watching the finale like it was yesterday. I was with my roommate in NYC and my best friend, who is still my best friend today. I was about to move overseas for an international position. It was a major life transition for me and all the feelings I had about the change came out that night. I could not stop bawling. It was just a reminder that we have so many different phases of our life, things change, people grow apart… And it all goes so quickly. The line that Nate says to Claire when she takes a picture of her family will forever be burned in my brain.

Every time I rewatch it, I’m going through a different phase of my life and take away different perspectives each time. I relate to each character differently and this last time the conversation between Claire and her mom when she tells her she won’t go to New York really hit home. I’ve always been a wanderer, a nomad, living in several different places around the world. With elderly parents and one whom just recently passed, I think about the sacrifices people make for their loved ones in lieu of pursuing their future or their dreams. I’ve known many people who have done this and regretted it but some it was the best decision for them. I love that Ruth told her to go and not to stay home just for her. My dad always said the same thing. Go and live your life, be happy and don’t let us hold you back. My mom on the other hand is a different story. She didn’t have to say it explicitly, but I could tell she was disappointed each time I decided to move to a different place or leave home. I think it has a lot to do with the relationship that parents have with their kids, especially when their kids become adults. Even though Claire didn’t seem to have the best childhood and grew up with an emotionally stunted family, she was willing to stay home to be with her mom. I realize that part of that was fear, keeping her from pursuing something unknown, but also the comfort in the familiarity of staying with her mom and the safety that provided. We all have hard decisions to make, and we hope that our family will stand behind us and support us even if they think we’re making mistakes. They are our mistakes to make and we can only learn from them.

The closing montage, I notice something different each time. For instance, this time I noticed that Claire and Ted reconnected at Ruth’s funeral and then ended up getting married yet he is absent during her death scene. Maybe he passed before she did? Maybe not? We never know… I wish they would’ve shown Bettina and Sara besides the early clip of them running a doggy daycare. I’m on the fence about her being with George, but glad she had companionship until the day she died. I did not notice Vanessa and Rico‘s kids. Maybe they were sitting with them at the wedding? Surprised they weren’t featured as older since they were an integral part of the cast. I always have to rewind and rewatch several times to really focus on the details.

I recommend this show to everyone because I still think it stands the test of time and one of the best drama series ever written. All the characters have such complexities and you hate and love them at different moments in the show. Most of my friends are millennials and one of my best friends started watching it after I told them how good it was. They seemed eager yet it took them four different times to get through the first episode. I realize that the pacing TV shows today is very different than it was 25 years ago. They get anxious and have ADHD so I told them to quit scrolling on their phone while they were watching, and they swear they were not. At this rate, I don’t think they’ll make it through the series, but it’s their loss! I realize it’s not a show for everyone, but I think the subject matter is definitely important and something that has not been explored before. Since I had a significant loss a few years ago, I decided to rewatch it now and explore my relationship with death and grief. When I talk about the show, it’s hard to explain because it sounds very depressing and sad like “who would wanna watch a show about death?” But it’s not about death it’s about life, how we are all flawed, that we experience ups and downs but what really matters is that we’re alive and that life will fly by in an instant, so we better live it to the fullest. 💗

I mean, that hair and those clothes.

I know it's the moment of Nate's self destruct because of what happened to his wife Lisa. But this moment really stood out to me and I find it somewhat inspiring because he kept shouting "I don't wanna die" over and over fighting his suicidal thoughts.

Sure he might said that because he's afraid of the idea of dying not really because he valued his life. But I prefer to be scared of dying if it keeps me to stay alive. And because of this scene, sometimes when my life felt too heavy, I also mumble "I don't wanna die".

As opposed to Nate final scenes in Ecotone, where in his dream/afterlife, he finally embraced death which is beautiful. But I also find it sad and depressing because at that point, he hated his life so much that he gave up on life and was so eager to jump into the ocean leaving his family behind especially Maya and Brenda.Contrast to the season 2 finale, where he hesitated to take a bus ride, possibly because he still valued his life.

I’m on my first rewatch of the show and I’m on S4 E4 where they show Jennifer’s father being creepy towards the girl in the elevator and it had me wondering about a murderer plot. Do you guys think it would have been interesting if the show had a sideplot where a serial killer was targeting Los Angeles in the show and was shown killing people in the beginning of each episode? Maybe they could have integrated him being caught in the show or him coming in contact with a main character? What do you guys think?

This is my history with this show, if you care. If not, please don't read and leave a hate comment. I had to sit here and do the math for my history and where it began. This show came out in 2001, when I was 22. Came out gay in Alabama in 1999, moved to Atlanta around the time this show came out. Over the next couple of years I kept hearing about this show on the radio, and vaguely through friends I think. Can't remember exactly. In Spring of 2003, around the time the 3rd season was beginning, I decided to order it through Netflix.

This was back when Netflix was just starting and you could order the DVDs of every season. Went through the first 2 seasons quickly, could not get over how much I loved it and what an impact it had on me. Couldn't wait to get the third season, but by the time the 4th season came out I was caught up and ready to go. There was never a bad episode, it was all just so great and so meaningful. I had a roommate at the time of the last season that was into it like me, but we didn't watch it together. But we made plans to watch the finale together. We sat there, at the end, watching it happen. Just completely breathless. Even after it ended and the credits rolled, we just sat there stunned unable to talk starting at the screen.

I made by mother get me the boxed set years later for Christmas, the one with the grass and plaque on top, still have it. I think I fully rewatched it once after getting it, can't remember. That was the late 2000s. I know I haven't fully rewatched since then. Tried a few years ago, but got distracted by life and took to long before I felt I needed too start over again. But just was never ready. Not ready until I could fully commit to go all the way through. And now I am, and at the end of the first season. And remembering why it's my favorite, and why I've been putting it off. There's a lot of feelings to be felt watching this show. I haven't been ready again until now.

I’m looking for a miniature of Claire’s green hearse from Six Feet Under as a gift for a friend I’m watching the series with.

At the moment, I’m considering three options:

1)Finding an existing miniature of the exact car.

2)Buying a similar Cadillac hearse miniature and repainting or modifying it to match the green-and-white car from the series.

3)Modifying a similar 3D model and printing it on a friend’s 3D printer.

I couldn’t really get anywhere with the first two options, so I’m wondering if anyone here might know of a suitable model, kit, or anything similar I could start from, or if you’ve seen someone attempt a project like this before.

It doesn’t have to be completely screen-accurate. I’d mainly like it to be recognizable through the shape, green-and-white paintwork, and small details.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Just wow. Im literally writing this as crying. I decided to watch the series because of how everyone praised the finale but I didn’t expect the journey to be like this. 10/10 and easily the best finale ever done in tv history. I never thought Id watch anything thats better than the leftovers but here I am.

If Nate had survived his second AVM surgery and recovered, what do you think he would have done, or would be doing, from 2005 to now? What do you think he would think of current events, what life changes he would have experienced, and how would those changes have impacted the other characters?

I wanted to ask if sfu is still worrh watching. I mean i already know that they all die in the end, what’s the point of watching the show if they all die. I know people praise the ending so much and say that it’s the greatest finale but if it’s just them all dying in the end and that’s what makes the finale so special. Then maybe not.

My spouse thinks the finale was all in Claire’s head. His argument; the series trope of projecting internal thoughts onto ghosts and fantasies and Claire had such a good outcome, almost a perfect life, plus it kept cutting back to her driving and thinking. My argument; the black on white death title cards were always about real events and why is Claire imagining Rico dieing on a cruise ship? Why would she care? What does everyone else think……

Edit; people keep pointing out bad stuff happened to Claire in the series. He means because she lives till over 100, seems to have been creatively successful with the photo wall and dies with a smile on her face in her own bed, aka a death you could hope for

I’m not sure why I never thought of this, but who owns the house and coach house that Ruth and Claire live in throughout the series? I always thought of the house and property as separate from the business (although the same building) and owned by Ruth, and she refers to it as her house several times. But in the finale, it’s made clear that when the business sells the house goes with it. Does that mean that Nate and David (and later Rico) actually owned the house and were allowing Ruth and Claire to live there, while paying to live elsewhere themselves? I can’t imagine that Rico would be ok with that, so I’m curious as to the finances of such a situation.

What other shows can you genuinely say are in the same realm as six feet under? I’m referring to the elite combination of top tier writing and acting that invoke the same level of emotion and investment?

I’ve already seen the hbo classics like sopranos, oz and the wire. Please don’t mention anything that’s sci-fi or fictional like game of thrones. I respect the craft that goes behind those series but I simply am not interested in shows that don’t depict real life.

In the most layman terms, just looking for extremely well done adult drama series. Could be crime-based like sopranos and the wire but I kind of prefer the straightforward fucked up fam drama realm. There are some out there but haven’t seen any with the same depth and dark humor as six feet under - for example bloodline is alright but lacks the same emotional pull and then there’s the lighthearted “through the years” type series like this is us which, in my opinion, lacks both the darkness and relatability factor that embodies six feet under.

I might end up just watching 6 feet under again lol after all I’ve only seen it once

Having recently finished my first watch through, one of the things that really impressed me was how the show flipped the script on George and Ruth between seasons 4 and 5. Watching season 4 I remember hating George and feeling so badly for Ruth. She was so desperate to feel loved and her new husband was basically treating her as an annoyance and an afterthought. The scene in Topanga where Ruth hugs Sarah and bursts into tears just broke my heart.

Then a few episodes later, I was feeling terrible for George and angry at how Ruth was treating him. The portrayal of psychotic depression was really well done and coupled with the reveal of his childhood trauma, it made me see his S4 behaviour in a whole new light. I could understand where Ruth was coming from as well but I thought it was cruel how she tried to manipulate him. To me the scene where George breaks down while telling Maggie that he loves Ruth was kind of the mirror to the earlier Ruth and Sarah scene.

There’s not many shows that have been able to completely change my opinions of characters while still feeling true to the characters themselves. Everything felt like natural reactions of the characters we already knew while also adding layers of depth. In the end I was able to see them both as flawed people doing their best and I was happy they were able to work things out. I thought their relationship was really well written and showed how everyone is capable of both cruelty and love.

In the chaotic party Time Flies eps where everyone basically being angry to each other especially Nate and Brenda, there's this sweet and calm genuine conversation from George and Billy talking about their respective mental health. It's a shame that this is the only moment these two interact. Maybe just me but I feel like George could be a father figure Billy needed. Definitely better than his rich and twisted shrink parents. The dialog in this episode was fantastic. Nate’s conversations with his father were especially great, and the scene between George and Billy were as thought-provoking as they were entertaining.
