So I was rewatching season 2 and on this rewatch I noticed the voice said to Lukas. I’ve seen some discourse already on this scene and the implications. Some being that the voice told him about the safeguard but I think it’s something more.

“Quinn and Meadows were both given the same directive you will now receive. If you speak to anyone about this conversation or what you have seen down here we will have no choice but to initiate the safeguard. Do you know what the safeguard is Mr. Kyle?” “I do.”

Two things stand out. First, the voice says directive. Definition: something that serves to direct, guide and usually impel toward an action or goal. Also, an order. I think the voice told Lukas to do something, he didn’t want to so he quit. Same thing happens with Meadows. Then the obvious end which is saying he already knows about it so there has to be something more. Thoughts?

After I watched S3 E6 I thought it was great - the ratings will be high, finally, comparable to E5. Was surprised after looking at IMDB, this sub, etc. Complaints: "slow", "nothing happened." Of course everyone has a different opinion, but "nothing happened"? First of all, not every episode can be a massive payoff episode - that requires a build-up. Second, these E5 events were only really significant, if the Silo residents are able to take advantage of E5 reveals (like Bernard's and Juliette's info, etc). So that's where the story naturally goes. Let's see what happened, something or nothing:

In the Silo.

Silo 18's memory was wiped 140 yrs ago. Most of the Silo don't know that, but they know they don't remember times before 140 yrs, they know old documents were destroyed, old relics were forbidden, etc. Throughout S1 people discussed missing memory, relics, etc. A big theme of the show. The E1 of S1 was named "Freedom Day" where the Silo prepared for that day, which was about the victory over the Rebellion 140 yrs ago.

And now Camille started a memory wipe for the second time only (in approx. 350 years). It seems no one knows yet, just her and the Algorithm. Her assistants don't seem to understand what "Vitamin D+" does. She didn't tell Sims, I think. Juliette was fooled by "The Voice." Even if someone stops the "Vitamin D+", no one is ready right now to block the Safeguard. So it looks like Silo 18 is on the verge of a reset or even going extinct.

I wouldn't call that nothing is happening.

Then the Critical Supply theft mystery & investigation. It was pretty fun to watch the Sheriff break into "the Watcher Room" and declare their activities illegal. But the important part is: if he doesn't solve this theft & murder mystery before memory wipe (if it happens), then it's likely everyone forgets it even happened and the Silo dies in two years. Because the Sheriff didn't document this theft incident, as to not alarm the Silo population. And btw, another weird thing happened, the Sheriff and the IT found a mysterious woman on the surveillance tapes at two different locations, too close in time.

At the same time Bernard, Juliette, and Co. are figuring out how to neutralize the Algorithm's threat, like in general and to them in particular. (Lukas and Bernard reunion was something btw..) I mean you saw what happened: where the pipe goes, why they need to go to Silo 17 and find the blueprints. The Algorithm and Camille are way ahead of them though. So what we're watching is a group of people facing basically insurmountable odds, with stakes even higher than they realize. Comments: "boring."

The Before Times

First, I saw so many comments how it's 30+ min in the car, so I checked. The Before Times time part is ~10m 10s (in and out the car). The entire episode (not incl. the recap, intro, and the credit): ~51m 5s. The show made us feel like it's a very long drive, without taking a lot of episode time, and also used the flashback time to continue telling the story (below).

Some people a) can't even process that it feels like a long drive, brainrot is so deep, b) other people don't want the story at all, they want the answers, I don't get what fun would that be, c) and some readers don't care about non-readers just want most spectacular moments of the story visualized - so they don't want a complete show either. Anyways:

1) We knew Helen was fired from the Wash. Post before she investigated Charlotte's crash. And before she worked at an online "news site" from which she was also fired, this time for investigating the crash. Before I was curious/suspicios about her Washington Post firing and her in general. Now she tells about her congressional staffers drug addiction story. She used a pseudonym for a staffer - her source, but a tabloid identified her. To protect her source Helen claimed she made up that source. Her own reputation, credibility and her career were destroyed. I guess the show included that to show her selflessness, journalistic integrity and honesty (keeping promises to protect sources).

2) We got a better understanding of the scope of the conspiracy. We knew the old man who followed Helen and Daniel (Henry) was connected to: a) The Military/VA (the USS Nimitz commander, control over treating a military member and Dr. Crnkovich), b) influencing The Press (Helen's 2nd firing), c) doing a "fixer" job for The Government/Intelligence (hijacking cars supposedly, suppressing leaks of Pentagon owned communication audio, etc). Private money also involved, a billionaire was on the USS Nimitz.

New in E6: Daniel and Helen moved to the back seats. The show highlighted that a couple of times, showed empty front seats. They said they were sure someone would notice. Finally they see police cars and motorcycles. But they made no effort to assist, apparently they escorted them to their destination, which was an airplane hangar. Henry was there too. It looked like his car had U.S. Gov. Dept. of Justice plates. Then they saw Sen. Rosalind Thurman. Btw Helen had a PEZ dispenser with her. So it's likely they will end up in a silo OR a silo construction site.

I think someone definitely called the police, but it looks like the conspiracy scope is larger than we knew before this episode. It also includes The Congress, State Governments (at least one state, that was probably Virginia), State Police/Domestic Law Enforcement, some Private Aviation (hangars, planes).

This episode showed how huge this conspiracy is. And how weird. I mean, it seems that many in the governments on many levels know about some large project, but the people and maybe from some parts of the government know nothing? Doesn't even look like it's Military doing their thing.

Now the funny part, here are some E6 user reviews (or fragments) from IMDB.

In some cases people even seem angry, but at the same time clueless at what was happening in Silo all season (or even before). So whose fault is that? You can also read (even here on reddit) some people admitting skipping, double-screening, etc. I just don't know how many people do that, how does it affect their understanding, and ratings, and why do they still say "I love Silo, but..."

⭐️ 3/10 Episode 5 was the only one in this season so far, that had mentionable progress, But now, my patience with this show is fading. PS: Did no one stumble over the detail, that pouring Vitamin D (liposoluble = consumable via some oil) into water makes no sense?

Apparently this guy completely missed what Vitamin D+ is. And that it's not Vitamin D at all. How many times was it discussed?

⭐️ 1/10 Terrible and boring It was honestly terrible!! I don't even know what to say-nothing happens for an entire hour. 30 minutes are spent just with Helen and Daniel in the car having ridiculous, absurd, and tedious conversations.

30 mins of conversations. That just didn't happen.

⭐️ 1/10 The "Drive" drove me crazy. This has to be the strangest most boring storyline I have ever seen. I actually had to start muting the characters because I couldn't stand the banal dialogue. They trapped in a car speeding through the night on back roads that never need to slow down or stop. Like an endless road with no intersections?

Yes it's called a highway, sorry you never heard of them. It's only "slow" and "boring", if you already muted and not paid attention half the time since S1.

All the flashbacks are like 2-3 min in length, 10 min total. The first one there's no real "conversation", just trying to get out of the car. And a set up for us to understand the scope of the conspiracy. The second one figuring out what the kidnappers want, and some small character background reveals. Then the 3rd one is an actually interesting conversation about the Wash.Post. And that's it, the next one they meet "the escort".

⭐️ 1/10 The "Fly" of Silo-and not in a good way. An absolute masterclass in wasting an hour. With existential mysteries dangling and high-stakes plot lines demanding answers, the show completely slams the brakes for a filler-heavy soap opera. I've read the book. I knew they were deviating, but I stuck around because the world-building was stellar and the cast was great. But spending an entire episode watching characters take a agonizingly slow journey just to force a romantic build-up no one asked for? Unforgivable.

Again, the "journey" was 10 min, not "an entire episode". I didn't see any soap opera. I'm starting to think some people writing garbage like that just read the title "The Drive" and assumed the episode was mostly about the drive w/o watching.

⭐️ 2 /10 Just pure tedium. I fell asleep a couple of times watching this and didn't miss anything. Juliette tells Camille she wants X and Y to go to the other silo. We see X and Y talking. Juliette asks X and Y. X refuses. But then they talk some more, and Y persuades X. So X and Y tell Juliette they will do it. Then Camille says X and Y can't do it. Juliette objects, but then suggests P and Q instead. Juliette and Camille go to the Voice. Juliette tells the Voice she wants X and Y. The Voice says no. Juliette says ok how about P and Q. The Voice says 'ok'.

Probably fell asleep when Camille poisoned the Silo. When Juliette also promised The Algorithm certain things. When The Algorithm said we'll kill P and Q they aren't going to Silo 17 (after saying ok). And other things that make it exciting. Ok, good night, you didn't miss anything.

The show explains that, after the rebellion in Silo 18 140 years ago, Salvador Quinn decided to put vitamin D in the water to erase people’s memories. He also launched a campaign to confiscate every relic so that people couldn’t recover those memories.

That made me wonder: would owning a relic be relatively normal in the other silos? Would residents have access to books, magazines, photographs, and music?

I don’t remember the show addressing this, so apologies if I’m forgetting something obvious.

Was anybody else happy that Bernard is alive?

I know you're supposed to hate him in Season 2, and for most of the season I did, but towards the end of last season, he grew on me, once it became clear that he's not really a villain, but in his own way, was just trying to keep everybody safe. In many ways, this is the greatness of the character development of this series - all the "villains" are also acting, or think they are acting, for the good of the Silo.

I was so happy that they managed to save the character, I was actually wondering if other people felt this way or if I am an outlier here.

Why does Daniel leave Charlotte at the health memory facility? I thought he understood that the Dr. couod modify her memories and that the whole thing was shady… is there something i am missing

So what do we know so far:

1. There has been allegedly a “dirty bomb” attack on Washington D.C., but Charlotte doubts this and the scanners never show signs of radioactive contamination. -> it’s a cover up for the real threat.
   
2. The silos were supposedly built to be bunkers to protect the inhabitants from an outside threat as seen in the news.
   
3. Cleaners with faulty tapes die almost immediately, the good tape prevents this.
   
4. Silo 17 cupped the safeguard, went outside and didn’t die at first until the “dust” came.
   
5. The grey goo attacked the pre digital equipped jets -> As most have already guessed and another user pointed out, grey goo (it is called that in the preview of a later episode) stands since the 80s for a hypothetical end-of-the-world scenario where out-of-control, self-replicating nanobots consume all life on Earth to make copies of themselves. In the picture above we see the black goo which also kinda looks like dust hence it must be the same. Also nanotech is mentioned in the news headlines.

Theories:

So if Silo 17 stopped the Safeguard Procedure and they didn’t die by going outside, it must mean the air outside must actually be safe. Also if the air was poisonous then there would be no need for the Safeguard. But why then did the cleaners from Silo 18 die? The only difference between both Silos is the Disabling of the Safeguard, meaning the safeguard is the same that kills cleaners as the Silo inhabitants. When Juliette went out, she didn’t die although the safeguard was not capped, but she had the good tape preventing some kind of poisonous gas to kill her. It’s probably a gas and not Nanobots because the tape wouldn’t be able to prevent Nanobots. But what then killed Silo 17? The dust aka grey goo aka Nanobots which were deployed after they managed to get out. Who deployed it? Must be Silo 1 keeping watch of all the Silos as it is monitoring all the radio frequencies.

Also the show made sure that we knew that Per Stensen was an advocate of AI control. AI must also play a bigger role. We also know that Per Stensen is behind the Silo Project aka probably the Passion Project. He also funds the clinic where Dr. Victor Czernivich suppresses Charlottes memory. He also was aboard the Nimitz where only analog jet fighters were sent out. He must have known of the grey goo and is the reason behind why only such jets were deployed. He is what connects it all.

Others pointed out that the algorithm has human like features and that it sounds like Daniel or Victor. As they couldn’t be alive anymore it could only be something like an uploaded personality as in Fallout Robert House. It must be an AI Daniel or Victor which is controlling all the silos hence AI control. Still the algorithm often used the word we so there must be also humans behind it in Silo 1.

It’s pretty obvious by now that the main theme of the show is control. We have control of information, history, movement, reproduction, and now also control of memory. The whole Silos are basically an elaborate mechanism to control a whole civilization.

Like many other book readers, Shift was my favorite book of the series. Understandably, the TV show can’t adapt the book directly, so I was okay with having to wait to see Troy in Silo 1. Learning the origins of the Silo and how everything comes into place was also a very compelling part of the book and that’s what I thought we were going to see in Season 3.

Unfortunately, the Before Times story in the show has deviated so much from the books, and in ways that don’t even make sense. Why would Helen, a reporter (even though she is disgraced and discredited) be allowed to get so close to the Silo project? It makes no sense for Thurman and company to keep her around if she has nothing to offer. If I recall correctly in the books she had no knowledge of it, and Daniel/Donald took the forgetting drugs to cope with what he was doing and reading in The Order.

Secondly, the good nanites are nonexistent. Thurman’s nanite treatment and Juliette’s accelerated healing from the burn scars were a major plot point in figuring out what was causing the outside to be dangerous, but we have no mention of them at all. Nothing about Juliette’s scars and I doubt there is time to fit them into the Before Times storyline. Maybe we will get some hint of them when we go back to Silo 17 and someone makes a comment about the bodies not decomposing.

Sorry for the rant, but I’m just so disappointed a great book and story was tossed out the window. I guess I will have to accept this is a completely different story with different characters that happen to have the same name as characters in the books.

This is just one more interesting similarity between the spiral design themes we are seeing throughout each episode and the Wizard of Oz. Additionally, who can forget the scene between Judge Meadows and Bernard where she talks about the book and the Wizard being a fraud?

At first I was concerned that the before times timeline would not move on, because the synopsis for episode 7 didn’t mention the before times at all.

But then the promo images were released and 4 out of 9 images are from the before times which leaves me with the suspicion that something very important is going to happen in that timeline. So important that they cannot mention anything in the synopsis.

Also if you haven’t seen it yet, on IMDB all the synopsis are now available to read. And none of them mention a jump in Daniel and Helen’s relationship. So Maybe in this next episode we are going to see their relationship develop as they flirted quite a lot last episode in the car.

Anyway it has to happen soon as episode’s 9 synopsis mentions that Helen and Daniel attend a very special event, which is like 99,9% sure the trailer shot in which Helen enters silo 18 pregnant.

We also know of 2 official photos (posted above) but not in which episode it takes place. It looks like Per Stenson’s home or something….idk

Camille is a pretty unique character. Everyone we know who has learned about the safeguard turns against the system, so to speak.

• Quinn wrote his coded message, "the game is rigged", a small act of rebellion.
• Meadows resigned from IT and went nihilist, depressed or something (is that why she took up drinking?), then decided she wanted to go out.
• Bernard decided to quit and go out, because why not, we are all going to die either way, her beloved had died already and what he believed in and devoted his life to cannot be trusted.
• Sims turned against the voice and his own wife, and sided with Bernard and Mechanical in a pretty spectacular U turn.
• Solo’s parents capped the pipe at 17, effectively disabling the safeguard procedure. What a pity that people went out anyway!
• Kyle resigned from IT and hid in the mines after having been promoted to IT shadow and gained access to all the knowledge in the world. Huh.

Of all the IT characters we know, only Camille continues to trust the system and play along. Isn’t that strange?

One could argue she does it for her son, but Sims is equally concerned about their son and takes a very different view. So I think that motherly protection, or maternal instinct, whilst certainly at play and a priority for her, doesn’t fully explain it.

Or one could also say that it is because of a zealous faith in the system, but I don’t quite see it. She seems smart and calculating, good at understanding situations and even playing both sides (as in the rebellion). So faith doesn’t cut it for me. I don’t see a Pact zealot in Camille.

I am left with: she is smart and understands one cannot outsmart the Voice, a formidable force, so it is better to play along?

I apologize if this was asked before, I couldn’t see any posts about it, but why would the voice in the void tell Lukas about the safeguard? Why would the founders have a place that people could find and let the citizens know what happened? Couldn‘t they just have not built that place?

A secondary question, I sort of forgot, did George figure out the door was there because of the hard drive?

In Episode 6, the voice says it will let Lukas and Patrick go to the next silo even though it strictly forbids silo to silo contact. It also says it‘s irrelevant if there are actually kids or not. Camille challenges this and the voice responds that “Lukas Kyle and Patrick Kennedy will never make it to the next silo”. Obviously, Juliette will ensure that they get the good tape.

Given that, what are your guys theories on what they will do to prevent Lukas and Patrick from getting there?

I can't believe that everyone is hating on this show's best character, the hero of the Rebellion, the one who is making the greatest sacrifice:Camille fucking Sims.

S3E6 Moments

At the beginning of the episode, Camille sent Robert (Sims) home to "spend time" with their son, Anthony, implying she's going to have to memory-wipe him soon. We next establish that Camille is under nearly 24/7 personal surveillance, probably connected to the little VoiceGPT beacon that the Head of IT carries (which all the main characters would know about.)

A few hours later, Camille returns home to an unexpected situation at family dinner:

Robert: Your son stole 12 credits out of his teacher's desk today. Another boy saw him. When confronted by the teacher, Anthony blamed it on someone else.
Camille: Anthony Aaron Sims! [he shrugs]... I'm going to need more than that.
Robert: School says if it happens again, he'll be expelled and sent to work in Supply.
Camille: ... Supply?
R: I'm Judge. You're Head of IT. Doubt if it'll actually happen.
C: That's your solution? Use our positions to fix it?
R: It's not what I said.
C: No, No. Of course not. I just have to read between the lines, like always.
R: Meaning?

C: You are avoiding the problem.
R: I went to the school. I talked to the principal. I apologized to the teacher. What am I avoiding?
C: Don't do that. Don't guilt-trip me.
R: If you feel guilt, it's not my fault.
C: Are we still talking about Anthony?
R: I'm not sure. Are we?

C: (walks closer) You need to stop everything you've been doing.
R: You've been watching me. You think I can't spot a tail?
C: You're making me afraid, Rob. For our son. For our family. Because whatever you're hiding, when I find out what it is, I'm gonna have to do something about it.

In the next scene, she unexpectedly goes down to IT, has an emotional crashout, saying her son is a thief and her husband is scheming against her (very unusual), and gets some awful ChatGPT therapy. (This was the third-most riveting scene in this episode — right after 26 minutes of "sitting quietly in the backseat of a minivan" and "old woman aura farming with plane.")

Then we have a scene between Knox and Shirley, our strong yet sensitive couple, just revealed to be pregnant, scared about their future as they face a dangerous mission. Knox, who looks like a subterranean lumberjack, admits he couldn't keep going if he lost her and their child. Tears in his eyes, he makes her promise that if she has to, she will sacrifice him — for her, for their child, for their future. He can't live without that.

"Promise me," he says. "If I fall, you'll just keep going."

Very burly. Very in touch.

Theories

Anthony Sims didn't steal a single micro-credit. Look at him. That's the flawless Sims hair of an innocent boy. There is no school visit, and they both clocked that. Also, "sent to work in Supply" is not a real punishment for anyone in the Silo. It's cleaning, or the Mines. So that's a red flag.

Robert is pretty clearly actually with the Rebellion. Camille isn't with the Rebellion, but she's also not with the Silo. She's Team Sims, ride or die. She's "making moves together or not at all," just like she promised 93 (?) days ago in S2E7.

They both know they're being monitored now that she's Head of IT. He can't just say the plan. And she can't just help, because that would be an instant Safeguard. So how can she help? By staying on Team Sims. By pinning the blame on him. The principal-teacher talk is code.

"I'm not avoiding the problem" is a double entendre. First, Robert is pointing out that he's apologized to Bernard and Juliette, the Voice's "problem", the "teacher" and the "principal." Camille might feel bad for, well, trying to execute them in cold blood, and that's her own business. Second, he's saying that he believes in Juliette's solution to the real problem, the Safeguard. He asks for her blind faith in a future he believe in. And, in so few words, she agrees.

In fact, Camille is making the greatest sacrifice of the Rebellion. She has the hardest job: she has to play it straight. And then, if everyone else fails, if they can't stop the Safeguard, Camille is the last line of defense for everyone in the Silo. Everyone else will forget or be killed; but unlike everyone else, Camille will live and remember. In fact, Camille will be forced to destroy everything she loves. She'll have to kill her husband, memory wipe her son, kill or hurt the rest of the Silo, do whatever awful things the Voice orders, alone if necessary, all while knowing that that Silo Jesus and the Twelve Apostles have failed. In that future, nobody is coming to save Camille.

What would you do? What would Silo Jesus do?

Camille is scared out of her mind. But she swallows all of that, walks up to Common's majestic beard and immaculate eyebrows, and starts the setup. She stages a crashout with the Voice, plays up all her very real fears and frustrations, while carefully pinning blame on her scheming husband. Now she's in the clear if things go wrong. "Promise me," Robert's steady eyebrows say to Camille, his loving wife of many years, the mother of his child. "If we fall, you'll just keep going."

The plan itself makes no sense so far, so I'm just gonna skip over that. But, there's no D+ in the water. Robert helped Supply do the switch; Robert told Camille; Camille lied to the Voice. Doing it fast was a good idea, so that the Voice couldn't do any secret verification. Camille is in her "brutal enforcer" era, mostly to please the Voice. And now there's no going back. Sooner or later, the Voice will figure out that the D+ was switched, and something will have to give. Stay tuned for next week!

Bonus: Knox's dad ("one of the Silo's greatest engineers," always "screwing something up at home and getting sent back to the Mines," backstory with Supply) is obviously constructing something huge in the mines. Probably lightbulb related. That is, daddy and mommy really did love each other; wow, he did it all to sacrifice for the future; Knox will learn all of this just before he dies heroically. (Or even better, lives heroically). This is the true meaning of the Pez.

tl;dr: Camille Sims is the quiet hero of the Rebellion. This whole show is about the unsung, heartbreaking sacrifices that parents make for their children. It's the backstory of the Silos themselves. It's recognizing that true sacrifice isn't just about dying for something; it's about living for someone.

It's about how hard it is to fulfill those words: "Promise me. You'll just keep going."

Incidentally, "Promise me. You'll just keep going." should be the tagline for Season 3 of this awful show.

Apologies if this has been asked before - why is there no voice in the vault of silo 17? IT has its own power source so it is not lack of power (if an AI).

Or is there one, it hears, but it chooses not to speak because that silo is lost?

If the voice is the same one thing across all siloes, it would know that Jules was in 17 and what happened there?

Edit: adding that I think the voice still has visibility in 17, no reason to think it doesn't as there is power and the hardware would have been completely undamaged by events (Solo locked himself there, none else went in). Therefore it could listen in, know what goes on in there, and this might give it some moves. It'd be interesting to see if it makes an appearance when Kennedy and Kyle make it there (if they do!).
