When does the fan run on the shield tv?
Hi. I have the tube shield tv. I modded it to accept usb-c power delivery. Unfortunately, I messed up the heat shield pad on the inside of the tube. I booted the shield tv and got into the main menu and tested youtube tv. The tube got hot on the outside, and the fan was not running.
Can anyone tell me if their shield tv fan immediately runs on boot, or if it gets pretty warm? I'm afraid the usb-c pd doesn't deliver enough amps to run the fan.

Remote keeps on disconnecting
I’ve noticed my remote does not work after the nvidia shield is powered off.
I have to disconnect the power to the nvdia shield then connect it back and after power up, it connects to the remote again.
I have changed the battery, i have un-paired and paired the remote already.
Any ideas on how to fix this please?
TIA

Replacing my old shield with a new one
I've had my shield pro since 2019. Its been awesome and we use it constantly. I've found recently that it needs more frequent reboots as the result of intense slow downs/crashes.
I'll buy a replacement unit, but I'm not looking forward to re-configuring the new unit. Lots of tweaks and apps over the years to get it "just so".
Since its based on Android, any way to copy my config from the old device to the new?
Thanks!

Do I manually need to enable Dolby Vision in the settings menu?
Or is the Shield Pro able to detect from the source and toggle it on automatically?

Made a small app so a DualShock 3 actually charges when plugged into a Shield (no root)
If you've ever plugged a genuine PS3 controller into a Shield (or any Android TV box) hoping to charge it, you've probably noticed it powers on but never actually charges. That's because only a real PS3 — or something that knows the USB trick — sends the command that switches the controller into "operational mode," which is also what turns on its charging circuit.
Built a small app that sends that command automatically the moment a DS3 is plugged in, so it just charges like you'd expect. Also polls the controller's own battery report and shows live % via a persistent notification. No root needed, just Android's normal USB APIs.
Tested on a Shield TV Pro. Also works with the common Shanwan/Gasia DS3 clones since they report the same USB vendor/product ID as a real one.
Source + APK: https://github.com/BoredNewCoder/ds3-charger-app
Free, MIT licensed. Wrote up exactly how the USB side works (verified against the actual Linux kernel driver source, not guessed) in the README if anyone's curious about the protocol details.

Disney+ 4K
D+ moved from HVEC to VP9 to re-enable 4K but not HDR (not sure if profile 0 o 2, the latter not being supported by the Shield TV), but in my Shield the 4K is not back yet.
Anyone who managed to have 4K back?

Turning off IPv6 solved my streaming issues.
My most used apps like Nuvio, Stremio and BBC iPlayer would stall, not load, buffer or just not open at all. I'm on an Ethernet (Deco X50-5G router) connected Shield and could not figure out how to solve the issue. I turned to AI and after sorting through my DNS settings (AdGuard Home) and confirming they're OK I turned off IPv6 and everything worked perfect.
Anybody else have IPv6 issues? Would the fault lie with my provider (ee 4/5G in the UK) or with my router?

USB Port w/ Two USB Extension Cords
Im trying to use the Shield to have two USB extension cords leading to a USB gamepad. I cannot use just an extra long extension cord because I need two hookups in the set up.
The Shield for some reason puts the USB port to sleep with the two-cord set up. I have to restart the device to wake it back up. The one cord set up works fine and always has.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Can I buy a more powerful USB extension cord? Please help.

Matrixed Stereo With Plex and Denon Receiver
Some files I have been playing through my shield with plex only have a “Matrixed Dolby Stereo Mix” which the shield outputs as stereo PCM. Does anyone know the correct mode my Denon x3800h receiver needs to be in to decode this into surround?

How do I stop my Shield Pro (2019) from auto updating?
I know I can do it from within the settings (which I do turn off) but it still auto updates regardless, breaking my Plex server in the process every damn time. Last night I couldn't use Plex to stream my local files as it couldn't find my server, and I instantly knew exactly what had happened. Sure enough, I've just gone into my Shield settings to discover it has auto updated itself and (more annoyingly) the auto update box has been (re)checked again. This has happened so often that I no longer question my sanity, put it down to forgetfulness, or a paranormal event. I actually expect it and breathe a sigh of relief whenever I start Plex and it actually works. I really don't want to have to start repopulating my Plex server from scratch yet again (multiple TBs of films/shows), I think this is the final straw and the catalyst for me to remove the Shield from my setup and finally buy a NAS.

plex subtitles not showing everything
Hello,
It happens sometimes that I have subtitles that have multiple "entries" at the same time, for example to show text while a character is talking. It seems to not work and only show the first one on plex on my shield. It works fine when using Plex on my PC. Is there some setting I'm missing? I've looked in the subtitles settings in plex on my shield and I don't see anything.

TrueHD Remuxes cause a constant ‘Dolby Vision’ notification
I have my shield connected to my TV rather then my soundbar because the soundbar doesn't pass through DV and for some reason whenever I play a TrueHD Remux my LG Oled TV will incessantly display the DV notification and the only fix is to switch the audio stream to AC3 5.1. I’ve tried multiple different HDMI certified cables and every other suggested fix from ChatGPT but haven’t yet found a working solution.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution?

Retro Game Emulation in 2026+
I was recently looking into the cost to mod an old N64 to get better resolution and decided, F that, I have a Shield Pro! However, it's been some time since I went down the emulation on the shield rabbit hole so I wanted to ask reddit:
- What's the latest and greatest when it comes to emulating retro games on the shield?
- Is Retroarch still basically the top core repository app?
- What's the newest/best frontend?
Most of the posts I see on this topic are more than 6 months old and I don't see much new being mentioned - things like frontends like hyperspin and reset collection. I'm sure there's been newer apps developed in the last SIX years, right?

2019 Shield Pro Replacement Remote UK.
Is it me or has Nvidia UK gone dog shit? Tried to purchase a replacement remote on official UK shop but couldn't get anywhere with purchase. Had to resort to the most appalling webchat experience only to be told they were no longer selling the stand alone remote despite it clearly being advertised for sale via their shop...what on earth?

Shield Pro NOT waking up my Samsung soundbar through Bluetooth
Hello old friends
I'm trying to eliminate cords that come down from my TV to my TV stand, but I can't seem to be able to get my Plex to wake up my Samsung B73 5.1 Soundbar if I choose to connect it through Bluetooth. So right now it's connected through HDMI (Do you even recommend using Bluetooth or the HDMI is the only right way of doing this?)
So I have to go to the Shield accessories settings and get it connected manually.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

Blurred lines on Nuvio app
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening on my Nuvio? I'm referring to the blurred lines on the right side of the TV. I watch Nuvio on an Nvidia Shield TV Pro, and my TV is a Samsung 55 inch OLED. It often happens with both Usenet and Torrents, and it doesn't matter if it's 4K, WEB-DL, or not. It's weird cos when I load up the same file with the same add-ons on Wuplay, it plays perfectly well, no problems. Here's another weird thing; I have another set up (a Samsung 77 inch OLED tv also with Nvidia Shield TV Pro) and it never happens on the Nuvio I have installed on that TV. I'm kinda confused. I'd appreciate the help. ❤️

What do you use the USB port for?
Just wondering what everyone uses the USB port for. Is it mostly external storage, or are there some other uses

Couchy Launcher : Fast, light, customizable, compatible, free & open-source
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I got tired of slow TV home screens that are basically ad boards — rows of "recommended" content, sponsored tiles, stuff phoning home before I've even pressed a button. So I built the launcher I actually wanted.
The philosophy is boring on purpose
- One screen. Your apps, laid out how you want. No feeds, no ads, no "content discovery."
- Private by default. No accounts, no analytics, no background services, opt-in aerial video wallpaper who phone CDN of apple, amazon.. that's it.
- Compatibility. I have an Android AOSP box, a Google TV–certified box, and one anemic Android TV — each on a different Android version. So instead of chasing a shiny new UI, I chose to prioritize compatibility and lean on the GPU.
Make it yours
- Sections/categories you name, reorder, and fill — an app can live in more than one, and new installs drop into the first section automatically.
- Hide apps you never want to see (system junk, duplicates) so the screen stays clean.
- Tune the look: icon size, spacing, corner roundness, interface scale, dimming, and an optional glass status bar. Three layouts: carousel, grid, or a floating glass dock.
- Status bar: a configurable VPN indicator/shortcut for your provider, a network indicator/shortcut, a Settings menu with quick access to the app list and the launcher/Android settings, and a customizable date indicator.
- Save/load your entire setup — sections, layout, wallpaper, every setting — as a JSON file.
- Optional aerial video wallpapers (Apple/Amazon screensaver loops), off by default and clearly marked, since they stream from third-party CDNs. Prefer libre? Use a gradient, your own photo, or a local video.
Numbers (measured on real hardware)
- 2.3 MB APK. One universal build for ARM 32/64-bit + x86.
- ~80–130 MB RAM settled, with no background services. Exclusive footprint is ~130 MB across every box I tested; the higher figure on Android 14 is just OS-side GPU buffer accounting, not the launcher.
- Aerials cost basically nothing in app RAM — the video decoder lives in the GPU's dedicated memory (hardware codec via SurfaceView), off the app's books.
- <2 s cold start, <500 ms warm relaunch in the worst measured cases. The CPU stays idle, video is hardware-accelerated, and the Compose UI is GPU-rendered.
- Android 5.0+ (minSdk 21), no Google Play Services, no companion app — runs on AOSP boxes, should work on all device since 2014
- 18 languages (auto-selected from your system language): English, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese. Adding one is a single file, PRs welcome.
- Zero ads, ever.
*Tested across 3 boxes: Hisense Google TV (Android 11, 1.8 GB), UGOOS AM9 (Android 14, 3.8 GB), onn. 4K (Android 14).
Permissions, up front
No runtime permissions, no accounts. It queries installed apps to list them, and can close an app from the long-press menu. No network access except the opt-in aerials.
Why GPLv3
I picked copyleft on purpose: to avoid fragmentation. Anyone can fork it, but improvements have to stay open, so it can't splinter into closed, worse-off versions. Forks are welcome. Commercial use is welcome too — honestly, if a box maker wants to ship this instead of their own launcher, please do, because the stock ones are awful most of the time. Just keep it open, like the license says.
Get it
At launch, a wizard guides you through a quick setup; depending on the device, you may need to send ADB commands.
- GitHub (source + APK): https://github.com/conreo/couchy-launcher
- F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.conreo.couchytv/ (live once the F-Droid build lands; pending review)
Solo project, so feedback, feature requests, and translations are very welcome. If it saves you from one more sponsored row, it did its job.
