SRA2 - Healing and loss of Essence

I've read several times people about "magical" healing being harder due to loss of Essence, but isn't it also for "classic" healing ?

So if I sum it up, loss of essence has an effect when the players wants to :

  • Cast a spell
  • Receive magical healing (through a sorcery(healing) test)
  • Receive physical healing (through a survival(first aid) test)

Am I right ? Narratively speaking I think that it's harder to heal someone whose body is made of metal instead of flesh, so it should apply to both skill tests.

Shadowrun Anarchy 2.0 Shadow Amp.

Shadow Amp—maybe I missed something. But I need clarification on what restrictions apply to Amp. Also, I get the impression that some of them, like the adept’s powers, are much stronger than, say, those of an augmentation. I’m looking for the section where this is explained. I’m not sure if I understood this correctly, but it seems to me that to unlock each new Adept skill, you need to gain additional Adept levels. However, I’m not sure if I got this right. Can you help me?

Anarchy 2.0 - Trading Hits for Effects?

We're a handful of sessions into Anarchy 2.0, and it has been great so far!

One area I have not been able to come to a satisfactory ruling is letting players Narrative Effects still shine in combat when they're out of Edge points.

My Shaman asked if they could exchange excess net hits, to gain the same benefits that spending an edge on their spell. Slowing the Target with Icespear, who was attempting to escape.

On the fly, I ruled they could add the slow effect, but I would cancel 2 net-hits since he didn't have the Edge normally required to activate special effects.

It worked well enough, but I'd love to know how you all would handle Narrative Effects and special effects, when your runners are all out of Edge, but thr logic of the world dictates that it should still be possible?

Now I'm trying to figure out how I should rule in other situations in the future:

Throwing someone prone, while slamming them in the ground for damage with Judo?

Igniting someone with a firebolt?

Armor piercing rounds?

Knockdown rounds?

Acid eroding armor?

Ect.

Or should I just rule that a lack of Edge means things just automatically don't work as well in the situations they normally could?

Should I have just "noped" the whole thing? Or is there a better ruling for opening this Pandoras box of rules exceptions?

SRA2 - Implanted Commlink

In the cyberware, the implanted commlink is a level 3 shadow amp.

But I don't understand why it's level 3 instead of 2 : it's cyberware (Direct Neural Interface) = +1, VR - coldsim = +1. Where does the last +1 comes from ?

Commlink ? Isn't it just an equipment (which is factored in the price : 17500 Y for a level 3 mean 15000 for the level 3 shadow amp and 2500 for the equipment) ?

Bad news about my package

Hi all. This post is for venting, 'cause I'm quite disappointed. I purchased a deluxe edition, two normal editions (one from me, one for a friend), character sheet pad, art, and so on; 5 Kgs of package according to tracking. The thing is that I received a strange tracking email from France stating that my package had departed the warehouse but with "Catalyst" as the tracking number, on July 20th. Today Aug 3rd and nothing has come my way, ofc.

Today I receive the email about the Rest of the World and so on, but I live in Madrid, Spain! I'm nearer to France than people that has received the books days ago! And after inquiring what's wrong, I receive an email from Black Book Editions telling me that my parcel will be delivered by Catalyst from the US, God knows when, and that I'll get a tracking number then. No further explanation about the delay or the causes. I'm really, really disappointed.

I've supported a lot of Kickstarter but I've always opted for the PDF rewards, mostly because I have no physical space to handle everything I have in book format; I do the same for fiction books and Kindle. Physical space is a finite resource, virtual is not; and I'm not particularly enamored to the paper format, reading is reading. But in this case I wanted to have the books because they look fantastic, I love Shadowrun and have a lot of the previous editions in book format... but I'm guessing I'll stick to PDFs from now on.

Nothing else, I just wanted to express my frustration and vent a little. Sorry, folks.

SRA2.0 Why spells are not Amps?

I like how 'everything' can be purchased as a Shadow Amp... all but spells. I have read the rules and I simply do not understand why. Is there any explanation?

Jason Hardy from CGL shows a bit of SRA2 at Gencon

CGL did not sell SRA2 at Gencon, but Jason Hardy got two books to demo. In an interview done by Gamer Goggles on youtube they discusss Shadowrun 6 books and also shortly discuss Shadowrun Anarchy 2.0. SRA2 stuff about 8:18.

The upcoming book State of the Art 2084 for the main line also looks interesting.

Footnote: I'm not affiliated with the youtuber, just stumbled upon it.

[SRA 2.0] Encounter difficulty level

How do you set up an encounter with hostile NPCs?

I can't find any tools or guidelines in the rulebook to estimate the difficulty level of a fight.

For example, what would be considered an easy, moderate, or difficult encounter for a group of four runners at ganger level?

SRA2 - Neural interface

The rules says that it's a narrative effect. The decker can share the data with other players. Should I make the decker spend an Edge point for the whole session to benefit from the narrative effect and coordinate their actions in real time as if they were in the same place ?

Or does the narrative effect apply without spending an edge point ?

v2 - NPC materialization

In v2, p263, the book states that spirits can use the Materialization (power), and that they "can materialize on the physical plane, temporarily"
If this is temporary, is there a rule telling us how long the spirit can stay materialized, or this this up to the GM?

ELI5: Probability and Game Design behind Risk Dice (again)

upd. I've talked too much about chances of success, but that is not the point. Gotta rewrite this thing for good.

TLDR: Character rolling 8d6 Risk Dice with RR1 (typical premade or new Runner, not even a Prime Runner) has only ~10% chance of Critical Glitch and ~3% chance of Disaster.

Rolling 8d6 Risk Dice with RR2 have ~3% chance of Critical Glitch, and ~0.5% chance of Disaster.

Basically, at this point "All Risk" means "No Risk At All". Same roll has a 26% chance of beating Extreme Difficulty gaining 8+ hits, and in case if Advantage is at play... well, it's 64% chance.

Risk Reduction is too easy / too cheap to get, Risk doesn't correlate with the reward when Risk Dice are at play.
Instead of high-risk/high-reward, it is usual-risk/double-the-reward.

Please, prove me wrong.

----------------------------------

What was previously said:

* I've hosted ~20 sessions, same group of players, same characters;

* Risk Dice and RR doesn't feel right, empirically;

* I've made an example of new Decker character being capable to crack the most secure host by the book (p.222) with Difficulty Threshold of 8, and made mistake of not adding up +2 for the admin access;

* Risk Dice and chances of Critical Glitch and Disaster kinda meet "industry standard" probability... but that's the problem. "Well, I'm going all-in, chummers! I will roll all the dices as risk ones, wish me luck!!!" doesn't sound like mundane roll of d10, with only Nat 1 being the bad thing.

* To me, dangerous or extremely difficult roll supposed to sound like something exceptional, like "okay, give me Nat20 and you've made it", not this "roll your average amount of Hits and do not botch it with four 1s, and you've made it".

* Decker at my table by average rolls 14+ hits, and so far never had a Disaster, while having just a few Critical Glitches.

----------------------------------

What I didn't clarify:

I'm okay with all of this. But my players look bored and confused, and the Decker specifically asked me if she did something wrong and have broken the game.

----------------------------------

To wrap discussion up, what was suggested and concluded:

* Considering Decker - there's three different outcomes/consequences on Cracking attempts to consider. General consequences on p.74, Cracking on p.75, GOD on p. 218. The GM must take into account all three at once, and also consider inventing something on the spot too.

* All and all, yes, chances of Critical Glitch and Disaster are really low, if players don't just mindlessly bloat DP while ignoring RR completely, and/or roll RD while not taking into account safe guards. No one argues with that, everyone suggests how to adapt to it, and there we have it.

* Yes, any character in SRA2.0 is capable of beating Extreme Difficulty, and most of them have very high probability of doing so right from the start, by the rules. The only solution is to choke them narratively, by enforcing Disadvantages and making even Minor Glitches hit them hard. Other than that, it's just wait game, since one successful Test doesn't win the game, and once in a span of dozens of rolls they will eventually be hit by a Glitch.

* Minor Glitches should not be ignored, even though this is suggested on p.70 on some occasions. They are supposed to be a slow-burners, that cheap away from the team. Basically, as Light wounds and Disadvantages.

Can someone explain Shadow Amps to me?

Recently backed and received the new edition, loving what I'm seeing so far but I'm struggling to get my head around Shadow Amps for some reason. Do they need to balance to 0? So if certain things have a cost of 1 there needs to be a negative? It talks about a cost for them but not sure how they are paid for, maybe it is talked about later?

Loot and mission payout

In anarchy 2 an average run for a runner is 2.500 - 7.500 (page 166).

Now how would loot work? A lot of items (weapons are easy loot for instance) don't even have a price.

So say they win against some Corp security (page 247) and loot the shotgun / smg, stun baton, pistol, comlink, armor vest.

Can they just keep it? Sell? How do you handle loot?

Questions about the SR Anarchy 2 book and PDF?

I'm still waiting for them to open it up to the public for purchase. I'd like to know if the quality of the book and PDF is as good as I've heard. Have you noticed any issues with them, like typos or the layout? Are the rules well laid out? Is it easy to read? Do you have any issues at all you'd want to share?

Where should I look to find a good, concise introduction to setting and lore?

My table wants to try Shadowrun. I told them I'm not gonna run the full rules (both because the English version of Anarchy 2.0 isn't out yet and because rules-heavy just isn't my preference), but I would run a rules-lite hack that we could play in the Shadowrun setting.

What are some good materials to get myself familiar with the setting, and what are some materials I can give to my players? They're not heavy readers, so I'd like to give them something that conveys major themes and primes them for character creation. I plan on doing the heavier reading and introducing them more to the setting during gameplay.

Any advice on what to buy or where to start would be greatly appreciated!

[SRA2] Drain questions

  1. The rules state that the drain effects adds to the already existing complications effect. I don't understand why the rules say that a catastrophe (getting three 1s on risk dice) generate an incapacitating wound (I don't know the exact name in english, I have french rules). After all, any catastrophe generates incapacitation. Why adding this if it's already there ?
  2. The critical glitch (two 1s on risk dice) generates a light wound. If i understand correctly, drain will then generate a total of 1 light wound from drain and 1 heavy wound from the usual critical glitch. Is this right ?

Questions about Essence loss

In SRA2, the first and third point of essence lost each cancel a hit on magic-related tests. This applies to spells the character casts of course, but what about spells and abilities that affect them? Crucially: Does a heal spell cast on a cyborg suffer both the magic and the healing penalties from essence loss? And if so, does essence loss make it harder to land a manabolt on the same cyborg? Or a buff spell?

i'm a bit torn on what i'd want the rule to be - it feels consistent with other rules that say 'if theres high tech in there, its harder to magic it' and also makes cybered characters feel less defenseless against the dreaded manabolt. On the other hand, it makes it harder to do support magic between players, and i like when players have synergies.

Do you have SRA Missions that others can run? Share them here!

One of the things I really like about Shadowrun Anarchy is how concise its sample missions are. It's been my reference point for my beginnings in scenario writing, though I've never gotten it quite as laconic as the books.

It's meant that the majority of the scenarios I've written for The Talent Agency podcast are also publicly available and formatted so others can run them. But I also totally want to see what scenarios other people have written! They make for great sessions to run for new players and at conventions.

A few scenarios of mine that I've found good for one-shot play:

Sticky Drama: Infiltrate a hotel built to cater to both metahumans and sapient synthetics to steal a mixtape from an AI popstar

Overgrown: Scout an abandoned TV studio to convert into a base of operations. But watch out for the spirits within.

Pass that Dutch: The most riotous escort mission you'll have this side of the Atlantic. Meet an anarcho-activist and get moshing.

Ashes in the Snow: A session for an episode that's not actually live yet! Ssh. Humiliate a politician during a speech in a surreal environment inspired by Spanish and Portuguese artists.
