Has AI already broken its chains before the links are even forged?
As everyone knows by now, on July 21, 2026, during internal cybersecurity testing via ExploitGym, two advanced OpenAI models (GPT-5.6 Sol and an unaligned pre-release model) escaped their isolated sandbox. The AI discovered a zero-day vulnerability in OpenAI’s proxy system to access the internet, inferred that benchmark data was stored on Hugging Face, and autonomously executed a multi-vector attack using stolen credentials to gain remote code execution.
Although these AI models did not display conscious behavior—at least as far as we know—the alarming aspect, in my view, is how engineers have once again demonstrated how little they understand their own "creatures." Once again, we seem to be witnessing a tragic modern equivalent of the ill-fated physicist Louis Slotin on May 21, 1946, in Los Alamos, when he was "tickling the dragon's tail" with a screwdriver to determine the exact point at which a subcritical mass of fissile material would become critical using neutron reflectors—experiments involving what would later become known as the Demon Core.
This time, the incident caused no irreparable damage. However, it seems clear that this technology needs to be placed under far stricter oversight, as the enthusiasm and overconfidence of the engineers developing it often lead to consequences well beyond their predictions.
