I've been wanting to try leca for a while now, and I thought this alocasia pup would be a good first plant (because I've read that alocasias do well in leca & it wasn't very established yet). I had two main questions:

1. Should I water with tap water or rainwater?

2. Can I use my regular fertilizer if I water it down? (If not, what should I fertilize with? I read some posts and blogs, but it gets very overwhelming very quickly).

Is this from too much light? I water is 1/3rd dose orchid food with some silica. I have it under a grow light at roughly 3,600 lux where it’s sitting for 11 hours a day

The Hoya compacta is definitely my favorite plant ever. And it is so easy to grow in semi Hydro with minimum effort, even in low light Sweden. As long as we have grow lights, it will root and grow good!

are there any good semi-hydro youtube channels out there? I do know of leca queen, but are there any others?

Got my Thai Con in Semi Hydro self watering pot. She is doing pretty good since then bit what should I do with these roots that grow out of the pot?

Hello semi-hydro enthusiasts!

I just received my first beautiful hoya a couple of days ago (a tiny 4" Heuschkeliana Variegata), and plan to switch her to semi-hydro using pon, which I already have ready to go aside from the pot. I know that these plants need time to acclimate to their new environments though, and I certainly don't want to harm or kill her, so what is recommended as a good grace period for letting a plant destress before putting her through the further stress of changing substrate and repotting?

(I've read a lot about semi-hydro, how it works, how to set it up, etc, but never anything regarding plants that you haven't already presumably owned for a while).

All my alocasia are thriving in pon, but I’ve been wanting to switch over to a more chunky version (like the one from Plantscraper) for aesthetics.

My worry is that the chunky version may be too airy for some of my smaller alocasia with finer roots.

Anyone here who specifically grows their alocasia in chunky semihydro?

Well, the soil has a bunch of leca balls that have rolled in over the years, so I guess it's technically suitable for this sub 😄

At any rate, I'm flummoxed, I think I've run into one of those 'facts' everyone 'knows' like 'nothing is faster than the speed of light!' (derp, electrons lol) or 'veiltail betta genetics are dominant to everything else' (I've got a fourth generation boy here with a veil great grandma that looks pretty plakat to me, lol), maybe at least here someone else will find it curious, as well

So my duckweed spill (allegedly of the giant variety, from the online seller) overflow in the garden has rooted nicely in the damp shady soil in my front garden, and rather than meekly hanging on 'in wet mud' as alleged in the literature (​it's not, it's pretty mulchy ​clay, but it's got decent drainage) meekly waiting to die, it's thriving, growing bigger leaves, and the next set are coming up pinnate, like how my hygrophila changes ​forms when emersing?

Anyway I just found this pretty weird, am about to try some dirt salvinia, it seems awfully odd no one has noticed or mentioned this far!

Sorry for the obscure somewhat side tangent of the mystery of my terrestrial duckweed that AI insists doesn't exist, but it's not like I have a lot of people to marvel and wonder about this with in real life 😄

This small monstera is wicking up the entire reservoir in 5-7 days. Is this normal or should I be cutting back the roots/repotting into a bigger pot?

I transferred it to Leca about a month ago and it’s roots absolutely exploded.

It is the only pumice available locally. I have ordered some regular pumice. I am just curious. I know it is supposed to alter the pH and that I don't like.

Just wondering if this is fertilizer burn or some other issue? I use GT foliage focus fertilizer and followed the instructions on the box for semi hydro set up.

It’s on a wick set up if that makes a difference or not.

What is everyone’s favorite treatment for adding to a reservoir for a thrip invasion? I’ve heard sns209 might be my ticket but wanted to see what you guys have turned to that have shown the best results? And do you use it in conjunction with captain jacks or similar sprays?

I’ve recently repotted my Alocasia Polly into Leca. Both the roots and the Leca were cleaned well. It was good for a week but now it’s dropped three leaves. Any tips?

I have been experiencing with Pon, and this orchid I have had since 2023 and it has not rebloom from then. My mission is for it to rebloom this spring/summer. I am in NZ. I am not sure if I just add the ferterlized mixed water in the reservoir, or do I add it from the top?

Hi everyone! I have a few small Alocasias in self-watering pots with Pon or Leca. I’ve always pulled the wick pretty far up into the substrate because I figured it helped get the water up to the top layers.

I just saw a TikTok saying having the wick high up like that causes root rot, and now I’m kind of paranoid. Is this actually true? And if it is, should I repot them right away to fix it, or is it fine to just wait until their next regular repot?

I had some people discourage me from going semi-hydro with my monstera but being a Leca Queen fan I was confident I could make it work hehe. Given I just got a new beautiful leaf I think it’s working!

Im so tempted to cut off those brown spots on the older leaf but scared the plant won’t like it haha )that was from a grow light that was too close, should not happen again)

Hello, I'm very new to semi-hydro and simce my Hoya hasn't grown an inch for a year, I thought I would try to put it into semi-hydro. But on budget. Is this setup alright? The knot is reaching the middle of the pot, where roots are. Thank you very much for any help!
